Ok here's an Idea what if ownership of all music was communal and every song ever written ever was public domain? Would that be better?

Ok their is a lot of talk online about Piracy laws so here's an idea that just came to me a second ago. Lets say person A is a musician he rights and plays music as a hobby he has no other job. Lets then say person B really likes his music and decides to distribute it. Because all music is public domain person B can distribute copies of person A's music to the world without person A making a single dime off of it not that it bothers him this is just his hobby he holds his own job working at a store like a normal person and occasionally makes money at local clubs playing his music live. No one is really being harmed here is their and the intrusive Music industry would cease to exist seeing as their is no way for them to make profits and thus no longer a need for SOPA because we all own all music ever written to do with as we please and no one is technically stealing from anyone.

It sounds like communism, and so it is communism. If the music industry ran on communism, all industries would. It just wouldn't work out, let's just put it that way. Having said that, I think that piracy laws should be relaxed.

It is already, at least for practical purposes for the listener.

yeah but it's still illegal to listen a song you got from source A instead of Source B.

Yes it is, but there is no practical way to enforce this. I'm all for information being public domain, so that it would be legal to download free music, movies ect. from anywhere. The line should be drawn at physical copies of said media, in terms of intellectual property.

If your were a Songwriter/musician would you ever write another song if you knew it was going to be given away for free?.....would you ever write another novel? How about invent a special surgical instrament?

Well I had isolated the question exclusively to musicians. Novel writing is a career and can't really be socialized the same way music can. Music is much easier to write than a book and you don't see many people writing books in their free time just for themselves like you do music.

It starts with music but where does it end? You can bet it will spread.......

Honestly, I think it would make music even more shallow. Musicians would be competing for the emotions of the concert-going audiences.

Not really, Ever here of the book called the capitalist manifesto? it is about a binary economy not communism and critiques capitalism well. I posed the con side of the question in a way that those who disagree would probably respond.

What incentive would anyone have to create anything new and excellent?

Music would be just a hobby. People will still pay to here music live just not to down load and money made off of CDs or downloads for your I pod go directly to the creator of the CD or download.

People are free to make music as a hobby, publish it under an open source license or turn it over to the public domain. Do you listen to any such music? If you do, you can bet the artists are giving it away at part of the marketing for a CAREER.

It is not! You are smart enough to weigh the opinions of others and make up your own mind as to to best outcome for everyone.
