Study: Children fare better in traditional mom-dad families
By
Cheryl Wetzstein

Two studies released Sunday may act like brakes on popular social-science assertions that gay parents are the same as — or maybe better than — married, mother-father parents.

“The empirical claim that no notable differences exist must go,” Mark Regnerus, a sociology professor at the University of Texas at Austin, said in his study in Social Science Research.

Using a new, “gold standard” data set of nearly 3,000 randomly selected American young adults, Mr. Regnerus looked at their lives on 40 measures of social, emotional and relationship outcomes.

He found that, when compared with adults raised in married, mother-father families, adults raised by lesbian mothers had negative outcomes in 24 of 40 categories, while adults raised by gay fathers had negative outcomes in 19 categories.

Findings such as these do not support claims that there are “no differences” between gay parenting and heterosexual, married parents, said Mr. Regnerus, who helped develop the New Family Structures Study at the university.

Instead, “children appear most apt to succeed well as adults when they spend their entire childhood with their married mother and father, and especially when the parents remain married to the present day,” he wrote.

Mr. Regnerus‘ study of 2,988 persons ages 18 to 39 — including 175 adults raised by lesbian mothers and 73 adults raised by gay fathers — marks the first research from the new dataset, which initially included some 15,000 persons.

The second study, also in Social Science Research, takes a critical look at the basis of an oft-cited American Psychological Association (APA) report on gay parenting.

The APA brief says, “Not a single study has found children of lesbian or gay parents to be disadvantaged in any significant respect relative to children of heterosexual parents,” said Loren Marks, associate professor at the School of Human Ecology at Louisiana State University.

However, after looking at the 59 studies that undergird this assertion, “the jury is still out,” Mr. Marks said. “The lack of high-quality data leaves the most significant questions [about gay parenting] unaddressed and unanswered.”

Problems with the APA-cited studies were their tiny size; dependence on wealthy, white, well-educated lesbian mothers; and a failure to examine common outcomes for children, such as their education, employment and risks for poverty, criminality, early childbearing, substance abuse and suicide. Instead, the APA studies often looked at children’s gender-role behaviors, emotional functioning and sexual identity.

An APA spokesman could not be immediately reached for comment. However, Mr. Marks‘ findings have been presented previously in gay-marriage lawsuits on behalf of those arguing in favor of traditional marriage, and critics noted that Mr. Marks‘ paper had not been published yet and that he was not an expert on gay families.

Jennifer Chrisler, executive director of the Family Equality Council, declined to comment on the studies, which she had not seen.

But she was confident they could not counteract “the very deep and rich body of research that has been conducted over the last 30 years” that show that children raised by gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender mothers and fathers “do equally as well as their counterparts raised by heterosexual couples.”

“And I can tell you anecdotally that, given the thousands and thousands of families that I spend time with on a regular basis,” that what happens in their lives “bears out and confirms everything that we see in the research, in terms of the positive outcomes for these kids,” said Ms. Chrisler, who is raising twin sons with her wife, Cheryl Jacques.

I guess the 60% or so kids in a single parent household don't count,.. but of course the study wasn't about the living condition of all children. I remember a study that proved McDonalds hamburgers were healthy, at least when compared to supermarket brand hot dogs.

I'm fairly sure Mr Regnerus didn't encounter any of these type parents,..

It depends on the parents and their parenting style really, not the sexuality of the parents.

Its great that this study shows the truth about something so very wrong for children. This professor is in for a nightmare when the Gay and Lesbian activists get moving against him. This is a beneficial study that needs to be heard by all.

Load of crap. Children raised by gay/lesbian parents do tend to fare better, and I know many people raised by gay/lesbian parents. They are all more educated and successful than the average person. I'm not sure why, but they definitely are. And not all of them were raised by white, educated parents.

I have seen many studies in the past that have found that as far as children fare in mental and financial stability with gay parent is the same as heterosexual parents. It depends on the parents not whether they are gay or not. Talking about grasping at straws to put others in a bad light.

The survey's sample was children born between 1971 and 1994. This skews the results; that was the era before any sort of gay marriage or gay adoption in most states. The end result is it shows that children of parents who were in the closet and broke up with their partner are worse off than kids from marriages that stayed together. Shocking: kids from broken homes did worse than kids from stable homes!

The survey went on to ask: “From when you were born until age 18 … did either of your parents ever have a romantic relationship with someone of the same sex?” If the respondent said yes, he was put in the “gay father” (GF) or “lesbian mother” (LM) category, regardless of subsequent answers. But if he said no, a later question about the relationship between “your biological parents” was used to classify him as the product of an “intact biological family” (IBF) or of an “adopted,” “divorced,” “stepfamily,” or “single-parent” household. In other words, broken families were excluded from the IBF category but included in the GF and LM categories.

This loaded classification system produced predictable results. In his journal article, Regnerus says respondents who were labeled GF or LM originated most commonly from a “failed heterosexual union.” As evidence, he observes that “ju...

In his journal article, Regnerus says respondents who were labeled GF or LM originated most commonly from a “failed heterosexual union.” As evidence, he observes that “just under half of such respondents reported that their biological parents were once married.” Most respondents classified as LM “reported that their biological mother exited the respondent’s household at some point during their youth.” Regnerus calculates that only one-sixth to one-quarter of kids in the LM sample—and less than 1 percent of kids in the GF sample—were planned and raised by an already-established gay parent or couple. In Slate, he writes that GF kids “seldom reported living with their father for very long, and never with his partner for more than three years.” Similarly, “less than 2 percent” of LM kids “reported living with their mother and her partner for all 18 years of their childhood.”

So this survey was essentially a survey comparing gay kids from broken homes (i.e. largely children of parents who were in failed heterosexual relationships before coming out) to kids from two-parent households.

The study’s main takeaway, according to Regnerus, is that kids of gay parents have turned out differently from kids of straight parents, and not in a good way. I’m sure that conclusion will please the study’s conservative sponsors. But the methodology and findings, coupled with previous research, point to deeper differences that transcend orientation. Kids do better when they have two committed parents, a biological connection, and a stable home. If that’s good advice for straights, it’s good advice for gays, too.

Don't know anyone who says that gay parents are the same as or maybe better than traditional mother father families. I do know lots who say gay parents would be better than raising a kid in an orphanage.

My personal feeling is that sexual orientation is just one factor in family life. Other characteristics such as family income, family intelligence, and culture play a far more major role in the success of such an endeavor.
