Octomom Goes on Welfare: Unexpected or Inevitable?

Nadya “Octomom” Suleman may have sworn that she would never ask for government assistance. But even the extra money she made posing nude for Closer magazine wasn’t enough to keep her off welfare.

The mother of fourteen is now receiving $2,000 a month from the State of California. The money is deposited into a special debit card account and can only be used to purchase food. Suleman qualified for the card because she is supporting a family of fifteen on an income of less than $119,000 a year—or just under $8,000 for each member of the household.

Octomom Welfare Card

In 2010, a year after giving birth to octuplets, Suleman said that she refused to become “a self-fulfilling prophesy” and vowed to stay off welfare. When asked why she has reversed her position, Suleman told TMZ that “becoming totally destitute” left her with no other options and that she plans to go off food stamps in a couple months.

Since news of her decision to accept welfare broke, reactions have been mixed. Some are supportive of her decision to put her children before her pride. Others, however, are irate and are evening sending Suleman death threats.

What do you think SodaHeads? Was Octomom’s decision to go on welfare unexpected or inevitable?

We don't have a choice but she and her doctor had a choice. The Dr. should foot the bill for all.

I agree, her Dr's malpractice insurance should foot 100% of all of the bills for those last 8.

OK...she was really clueless as was her MD!
Given that, it's virtually impossible for a single mother to support a family of fifteen.

At least we all know that $2000 in food stamps, chump change, will feed her 14 children and not a drug or alcohol habit, as so often happens with cradle to grave welfare recipients who game the system for generation after generation!

And isn't that what the purpose of food stamps is all about? Her children should not suffer
because she used poor judgement and made extremely poor choices! I'm not happy supporting her tribe with my tax dollars, but it beats Solyndra and their fat cats!

Obviously, it won't make any difference if we're happy or not about supporting her and her litter with our tax dollars.

Why fret about that? It's the way of the future.

Not if good people decide their government has run amok, and set out to return
the government to its rightful owners..we, the people.

Not easy, but doable to eliminate too many entitlements and people abusing them.

We have had discussions about the subject in Texas. If you apply for welfare, then you stop having children to get it. Welfare will help with the ones you already have, but no pay for any more in the future. I am single in my 50's with no children, Why ? I can't afford me right now.

Totally agree with you. When you are using my tax dollar, you play in bed..or not... on your own dime!
I also believe there should be a limit to the number of years anyone can stay on welfare (real health and mental issues excepted). Set a number...... and then you are done!

    Agree 100%.

If you're in a tough spot, it happens. But, you've got an obligation to avoid making the situation worse and increasing the cost to others.

So just out of curiousity, doesn't China do that too? Or something like it... regulate the number of children folks can have... or at least the number of children the guv'ment will support.

China limits the number of kids a couple can have, period. HOWEVER, they also have little in the way of social welfare, and people support themselves or starve.

In America, we SHOULD be allowed to limit the number of years a person SUCKS the dollars off the rest of us, and the number of kids they have while sucking. If people want 14 kids-be able to support them FIRST.

    I agree that...your quote below:
"In America, we SHOULD be allowed to limit the number of years a person SUCKS the dollars off the rest of us,...."

I DON'T agree that I should give up my Constitutional rights and answer to anyone, including the government, how many children I should have.

I refuse to give up my freedom because of clueless morons who abuse the system....stop the abuse of the system... but don't even try to tread on me and what I choose as a still free American!

I completely agree. In the state of Iowa, a woman can get FIP (which is a monthly allowance for helping with children's needs) for 5 years. That only counts for one child. Once you use up that 60 months, you're done. Also, I believe the amount for someone not working is around $340 a month. It's not going to pay your bills, but it's "assistance".

Yup, it's called shutting off the spigot.

If you are going to be rewarded, and NOT have to get a job if you continue to make babies.....there are millions of women who will continue to procreate and let you do it!

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure that out......but they move to the states without those restrictions :-)
