Obama's "you didn't build that" speech: Everyone uses the roads, bridges, schools, and Internet that Obama claims the government built -- but not everyone is equally successful in life. So, what the hell was his POINT???

... and speaking of the speech, it's pretty tiring to read/hear liberals say that Obama was "being taken out of context."

Were the four words "you didn't build that" taken out of context?

Linguistically, you could say so. But in terms of the overall theme of his speech, not at all.

Even when "you didn't build that" is put back into linguistic context, the central message of his speech is the same -- a message of denigrating and downplaying the efforts of individuals and private business, and of propping up government as our be-all and end-all.

Parents, teachers, schools and friends all contribute to our success. Good schools are paid for by our taxes. Taxes pay for labor and infrastructure: Good roads on which to deliver our products and services. Our taxes also pay for law and order in our cities, and in the security of our nation. Success is a matter of determination and ingenuity on your part; but, you can also give some credit to America and her workers for an environment that contributes to growth and success, when you put forth the effort.

Obama is transparent to those who understand his underlying agenda. He is demonizing the rich and job creators in order to justify higher taxes. His core belief is that people need the government in order to be successful, This belief system allows him to make his case for higher taxes on the very people who work the hardest in America - small business owners.

All of those roads, bridges, teachers, etc. Obama claims were the reason for their success were paid for by their federal taxes, state taxes, property taxes, sales taxes etc. so the government did little more than to poorly manage the investment they made in those things. The true Obama is now showing and is a result of one of two things.

Desperation in which he will say or do anything to keep his power.

His ego revealing that he believes he has now gained enough power through executive orders and the placement of like minded Marxist in positions of authority that he no longer has to hide his true "fundamental change" he had in mind.

Can you imagine what this guy will be like if he's re-elected? Without having to worry about re-election to a third term? I don't even want to think about what a second Obama term would mean.

You are looking at a guy who never has built anything, who has been drug through life by people helping him along. So it was a very sensible statement when you view the world from his vantage point.

That's not very comforting, is it?

The anger from the nuts on the left is because whenever this guy goes off-script, stupidity comes tumbling from his lips. Apparently, using his own brain, this president is reflexively marxist. His handlers have tried to keep that under wraps by giving him carefully scripted speeches to deliver to the so-called journalists. He is given unremarkable phrases to deliver to the willing drones, that serve to excite their emotions, not to engage their brains.

The folks who are whining about out of context quotes ... they're upset this guy's true nature is being revealed.

There is a belief he holds that no business that is fair & honest. Were it not for Government nothing would happen. Yet between 1790 & 1916 the road net in the country was built not by the Government but private concerns. Though one could make a claim that without private companies the Government could not have been successful.

Exactly. Obama seems to think that it starts with government and that without government, businesses couldn't thrive.

He has it bass-ackwards. There would be no government without successful individuals and businesses to pay taxes to it.

Obama is an intelligent and well-educated man, but he apparently doesn't realize that all those bridges and roads and everything were built by government -- with tax revenue paid by the very people and businesses who he said didn't build them!
  • das JenSemPa 2012/07/22 23:41:40

What? When did he said that "people and businesses" didn't build "bridges and roads"? He said "you didn't build that". That refers to one person, a head of a company for example. This person depends and depended on other people and the whole society/government. I can't help you if you want to misunderstand it.
  • DuncanO... das 2012/07/28 12:43:07

And it also refers to a single thing being built (i.e. the business). His preceding statements referred to plural entities.

I am beginning to wonder about that "intelligent and well-educated man" label. It was recently pointed out by a private citizen that all of the roads in housing developments were built by the contractor building the housing development. As the community grew those roads became part of the larger community.

Not the way Obama put it. However, I thank my parents, my colleagues, and my gifted will in the pursuit of accomplishment. As for government, the more I succeed, the more they want from me. It is the government holding me back.

Your schools, teachers, parents, and friends all contributed to your accomplishments. It's a little arrogant for anyone to say they did it all by themselves. As has already been said, no one can claim that. Give credit to others who may have contributed to any success you have achieved.
  • Mike whiteco... 2012/07/21 10:53:51

You missed the most important part. The gifted will in the pursuit of one’s accomplishments seeking Happiness, as in “Life, Liberty, and the PURSUIT of Happiness.” If one was home schooled, we could leave out the government school system and its teachers.
