This is a very slanted and biased question. My answer is: No it will only make things worse. Government intervention is responsible for the catastrophic increase in tuition in the first place. When Uncle Sam guarantees the loan, the tuition goes up, because they know Uncle Sam is good for it.

The goverment has to get out of college funding -The federal government is the primary reason why college tuition is so high for the same reason why government subsidies raise insurance costs, rent prices and medical bills.

Get back to work on the work at hand and if we need something else from you on college loans or anything else we will gladly at that time let you know it. My parents didn't put me through school. My mother did not go to college herself until she was in her early 40s and she did it by working with no loans. Going to college does not equal prosperity and happiness either.

I voted NO ... but it is not a matter if The Executive Branch's plan goes far enough or not. I voted NO, it will not help because the indebted student class is being cast into the same role for Government intervention and solution as the banks during TARP. Students are a target for the Government to create an involvement, which will only screw things up even more, just as the Government getting involved in mortgages did not end so well. Instead of punishing banks and other money lenders of student loans ... make the Colleges issue a REBATE - on behalf of those having trouble meeting the terms of their loans - to the Banks! Isn't it time that the real gougers of the students/society be made to pay for their pricing themselves out of a stable market? Just asking.

I refused to pick one of the two BIASED answers. So I am tagging on you, if you don't mind.

The break down I saw this morning on MSNBC, showed that a $212,000.00 private college education for 4 years, would mean the student eventually paid back just under $29,000.00 and the taxpayers eat the rest.

UNFAIR on every level.

The key word here is PRIVATE College. We still only qualify for the same crappy amounts no matter what college you go to, so the tax payer does not pay the difference. Where did you go to school? Private school is not a state school.

If ANY school is able to charge tuition (public or private) and the student who signs up for the loans is only going to have to repay 5% to 10 % that is unfair to the taxpayers.

Loans at low rates should be available, BUT not for the very best schools or private schools., If you expect taxpayers to pay that, you should have to go to a public community college, then finish the 4 year degree at a public university-WHY should anyone expect the taxpayers to fund a private college education for anyone??

And why are tax payers going to be forced to pay the taxes to pay for these colleges degrees? If you want to go to college, be prepared to pay for it it is a privilege not a rights.

It is specifically because of the federal influence in student loans that the cost of higher education has risen. Once student loans were made easier to obtain, by federal subsidy, the cost of higher education sky rocketed. Why aren't people blaming colleges for gouging? If your grocery store raised prices 21% year over year, like they did in the UC system, you would see protests in front of the store the very next day. Send the occupy bowel movement to the nearest college campus if they truly want to blame the right people for their lack of ability to find a job and pay their student loans.

faculty and staff salaries at universities have also gone up nearly 400%, as have their benefit and retirement packages-which adds a lot to the costs. PLUS, all of the emeritus staffs that get a huge salary for barely any work, those universities get a LOT of federal research and affirmative action dollars, and they have HUMONGUS salaries no wonder it costs a lot, BUT all taxpayers should not have to eat those costs for some spoiled rich kids to get a private school education, or an Ivy league education.

Again..tax payers do not pay for Private college. Student loans are all the same amounts. If they don't get paid, then the government can attach your pay. The rest is paid by private loans, or family money. Sorry to rain on your Bash Obama party.

Both by children went to Private, Non-state state schools and qulified for Pell grants, Fafsa loans and 2 other grants that the names escape me. Do you Know that once the student passes the age of, I think it's 23 (at least in Pa.) 99% of the education is paid for by the government including food plan and on campus housing?? Each one of my children recieved different amounts so..no..they are not the same amounts

Under obamas new plan, they DO cover private colleges as all universities are treated exactly the same, and it puts the taxpayer on the hook for everyones college education.

i know people have to pay it off...i for one have student loans but im going to pay it off...its already were i have good credit for the loans because the amount i don't need for school stuff i send right back because i don't want to use it for something stupid

the only problem is how the job market on paying the loans off

Well, I have customers who are on the pell grant system and the use their overpayments for wheels and tires. Then they cry about the debt on the small amounts they have to borrow to cover books and tuition AFTER they pissed away their "overpayment" that was supposed to cover that.

They entire system is corrupt and stupid. If you want to go to school, pay for it yourself.

the only grant iv ever got was a public school grant which gave about 200 or so....the rest of the 10,000 or so i need is coming from student loans that i usually only have left after all of the supplies needed is 100-250 which i send right back....... i have no idea why people are so stupid to pay for things they don't need....i already know someone who got a new 42+" TV then end up having to pull out a loan because they "forgot" they needed to use the money for housing

most of the government seems that way right now...and if its not that then there's the gang mentality that is being shown in political parties

If you lose your job or can't find one, you can get the student loans deferred. Just let them know. My son has no problem since he lost his job. Now, the parent loans are no different than a personal loan, we have to pay regardless. If we didn't (and we had 4 college grads in 6 years) for which we did take the parental loans for a portion of the tuition, then we would have a problem with our credit at least if e did not pay. But again, taxpayers do not pay for those loans if defaulted on.
