    Thanks MJ.
Our very sweet 6 yr old hound has been going downhill for the last month since she had her teeth cleaned under general anthesthesia. Noticeably lethargic for two weeks post-op, and then steadily worse the last two weeks. Lost 6 pounds, the whites of her eyes were red afternoons and evenings, loss of appetite and zest. Trips to the veterinary office (spelled right this time) last Saturday and yesterday were inconclusive. Today at 1 a.m. she tumbled down the steps and would fall over every time she tried to stand up and walk. So I slept on the floor beside her until my wife and I took her to the vet's at 8. When my wife opened the back gate of the SUV, the dog did a summersault and face plant onto the asphalt. I carried her into the vets with a 2 inch long gash on the top of her head. The whole situation was pretty grim.
Picked her up at 5 p.m. and she was her old self again, but I'm calling her Butch until the 10 stitches come out. Seems her endocrine system was out of whack and her adrenal glands weren't doing the job -- Addison's disease. IV fluids and meds picked her right up, and she'll need a monthly shot in the future if the glandular problem doesn't resolve. So we're into it for $720 since last Saturday. But since we thought she was a goner last night, it doesn't se...'

But since we thought she was a goner last night, it doesn't seem too painful. She's at my feet right now, loving life. She looks like the picture above (brindle), only the sex is different. Happy ending. I hope it lasts for years to come.

Sounds like the cleaning is the culprit here DavE.(Proper mid-western sp.btw.!)Diet can help a great deal with this problem,so can enzymes.I'm sure your health food store can recommend some books on it,or will have information about it.Many carry products for animals too. It's good news that she's recovering.I think she knows you're her true friend. All the best !

Thanks MJ. Good advice and we'll look into the diet, enzyme, supplement area. I'm always a sucker for the unconditional love of a dog, and she does give it !

Glad to hear it DavE.Adrenal health isone of the keys we often overlook.Enzymes are criticle, most of the foods are prepared or cooked and lack them entirely.Supplementing her enzynes could take alot of stress off while she recovers. My sisters Cairn Terriers, one is almost 18 ! still like to play. There's a site 1-800-Homeopathy that has things for pets, also Gardens Alive! carries some as well. All the best my friend.

I'll see what I can dig up on this DavE.A woman I know is a clinical nutritionist who lectures throughout the Chicago area.Adrenal health is not my strong point, but she has MDs calling her alot about it as she's a true authoriy on it.She's doing something right, she's a 'mature' woman who looks like shes in her twenties.

Anything you turn up would be greatly appreciated MJ. Doggie is doing fine but our vet ended up head scratching after the final lab tests came back, so he can't put a definite finger on the problem. What we know is the anti-inflammatory steriod pills prescribed make her A-OK for now. Their side effects are increased appetite, increased thirst, increased urine production, weight gain and a propensity to pant sometimes. The first four effects are beneficial to her situation and the panting is only occassional and mild. From what I've read anti-inflammatory steriods make the body think the adrenal glands are more active than they actually are. The main thing is she is happy, energetic right now. Completely different than the other night and the weeks prior.
