The Obama administration’s proposed defense budget calls for military families and retirees to pay sharply more for their healthcare, while leaving unionized civilian defense workers’ benefits untouched. The proposal is causing a major rift within the Pentagon, according to U.S. officials. Several congressional aides suggested the move is designed to increase the enrollment in Obamacare’s state-run insurance exchanges.

The disparity in treatment between civilian and uniformed personnel is causing a backlash within the military that could undermine recruitment and retention.

The proposed increases in health care payments by service members, which must be approved by Congress, are part of the Pentagon’s $487 billion cut in spending. It seeks to save $1.8 billion from the Tricare medical system in the fiscal 2013 budget, and $12.9 billion by 2017.

    Really after all that these people have given of themselves to this country.
    I am not surprised that it might be due to increasing enrollment in Obamacare. However, it could also be a ruse to push the idea that the republicans won't give on spending on defense. Always playing games this guy. It just floors me!

    then lets cut all admins' s benefits ,,they already get major medical / pharmacy / dental / vision for 100.00$ mo premiums ,,,and those permiums are 50% co pay by govt. so they pay 50.00$ a month !

    why not cut theirs ,,it's not like they risk their lives for our country /world ,freedoms therein ..
    and 75% of their salaries as well !

    as it is the retired have had an increase of 25% in premiums , and they dont get these bennies till after mandatory 15 yrs ,,@ 50% and 20 yrs for 100% coverage ,,

    If you read the Constitution, you will note that the government is responsible for only two things-the Treasury and the Military. As far as I am concerned those serving and served in the military should be given the best healthcare that can be given. The rest of the public servants, president, senators, house members bureaucrats, judges, etc. should be on the same health care mess as we, the people. There should be no exclusions. At present the taxpayers are paying for two health care programs; one for the taxpayers and one for the assumed "anointed" mob.

    and many in congress stated (after reviewing obies proposed healthcare coverages ) agreed this wasn't suffectient for them ,, and wanted to stay with theirs

    and comes in the additional amend that congress shall pass no laws the do not equally apply to them ....Hmmm?

    they are public servants ,,,and in the "old days" servants meant what ?
    and hoped to get room & board / meals for those services ...but those werent guaranteed !

    then something happened in the past 200 yrs ,,,,?

    The idiots want to ignore that they are our hirelings. I was in DC last summer. What a phony bunch of fools. The fact that they are so insular from their employers is demonstrated daily. Their only objective is to not lose their cushy jobs. I firmly believe that term limits would help. I also believe that they should have to wait 5 years after leaving office to become a lobbyist.     but this is REALITY ..

    This ADMINISTRATION AND CONGRESS have screwed over the Military AND Veterans ..

    Dr James Garrow states top insider of military claims they are giving a "lipmus" test to see who will or will not stand on orders to shoot under marshal law. This needs to go out to every person.

    Why should he take away benefits from the very men and women (citizens) that protect this Nation. And their families are making a big sacrifice as well. One of his presidential duties under the Constitution is to protect this country from our enemies. He is more like giving to the enemy, like Morsi, who is according to Obama ( he is not sure as yet what Egypt is)? Sending them tanks and fighter jets. Also, he needs money for his and others global warming scam, as well as to pay for of his pet programs, as well as illegal alien programs. all that takes money. The oath is for the U.S. so I am not ashamed to call out him out for fleecing americans.

    Absolutely not! We owe these service people to at least give them top medical care after risking there lives for their Country. My question for Obama " Why are you and your family along with congress exempt from this very law you are forcing on the rest of us?" I think that these folks make enough money to pay for their own medical care, why should we foot the bill?
