Obama Ratifies the ACTA Global Internet Censorship Agreement(W/O Senate)

snipe 2012/01/27 22:18:00
Aren't all Treaties required to be voted on and passed by the Senate before a President can sign them? Thought so! Too much info to post it all here; plenty more at link.

In another example of how little Barack Obama cares about the United States Constitution and the role of Congress -as bad as it can be- the current U.S. president ratified the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement or ACTA. President Obama had signed the first binding draft of ACTA last October 1, 2011, also in secret.

"If ACTA were categorized as a treaty, it would have to be ratified by the Senate. But the USTR and the Administration have consistently maintained that ACTA is a sole executive agreement negotiated under the President's power," the EFF said. "On that theory, it does not need Congressional approval and thus ACTA already became binding on the US government when Ambassador Ron Kirk signed it last October."

Although ACTA is being presented as a tool “to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies,” the truth is that it is an effort to further centralized Internet control. With ACTA IPS’s will be obligated to use invasive procedures to make sure no user infringes what corporations say is a violation of copyright laws. Failure to detect and denounce such breach will result in the IP and Internet user receiving massive fines, and after three warnings, individuals who are considered repetitive offenders will be sent to jail and banned from the Internet. The IP that fails to stop the supposed violation of corporate interests will be taken off the air. The outrageous part of this is that the party -corporation- whose property was supposedly used without permission doesn’t even have to prove that the user or the IP violated its intellectual property. It is enough to make three accusations.

As it has happened in most countries that signed ACTA, in the United States the President has issued an executive order to keep negotiations concerning Internet control legislation secret. Barack Obama has cited national security concerns. According to Michael Gist’s blog, as well as leaked documents from the agreement, the ACTA global legislation has seven main sections

Awful lot of secretive behavior on the part of this president considering there's no national emergency or state of war.

Playing monarchy again are ya Obammy? What you say does not always go! Keep pushing and you will be removed from office now or maybe in the 2nd term. The American people will stand for only so much. VOTE NOBAMA IN 2012! SAVE AMERICA! Mr Oarrogant is trying to push his agenda again.

Once again folks. Sarah Palin gave us all a heads up with her closing speech during the Vice Presidential debate in 2008. Her words were,

"It was Ronald Reagan who said that freedom is always just one generation away from extinction. We don't pass it to our children in the bloodstream; we have to fight for it and protect it, and then hand it to them so that they shall do the same, or we're going to find ourselves spending our sunset years telling our children and our children's children about a time in America, back in the day, when men and women were free."

You're right there's not. But it's not about the parties its the individual members in those parties. George Jr. probably would have done the same thing but then there are other Republicans who wouldn't have even entertained the idea

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Here and there maybe, but a lot of Republicans would tow that line I fear... so would Democrats.

I might as well point out that Bush originally allowed this through, and it's been circulating throughout other Countries since. all Obama did was affirm the US's support of the bill.

We already know that, '07 to be exact. But, nothing's been signed til now and if Bush would have signed it I would have blasted him too. Just cause it might be your guy doing it doesn't make it right, something you obama folks need to learn.

Did I say it was right? No, all I said was that there was a consensus before Obama did anything. I'm completely against it.

Consensus from both republicans and Democrats. Let's face it, if the internet didn't give such a backlash to SOPA and PIPA, that would've passed. That had bi-partisan support as well.

And be replaced with whom? Who is the true opposition to Obama?

Mitt and Newt would do the same thing. Oh they'd give it a different name, wrap it up nice and pretty, but it would still be the same turd inside.

Obama hasn't been left any choice, the incompetence and malice emanating from the House mean that either he acts alone or nothing gets done, unless of course it involves regulating vaginal activities. That they have LOTS of time for.

The House doesn't want to do anything other than act as drama queen in chief, whimpering worms whose vocabulary starts and ends with the word "no."

They have placed their party above the interests of the nation since day one, and they will pay for it in November.

Because we have an ineffectual congress and senate. If we had a congress and senate that will push back, we wouldn't be having this discussions. Tell our pussyfied elected politicians to grow a pair, and this FAKE MESSIAH wouldn't be doing these things.

Besides which, I thought the Internet was designed for the free exchange of information without censorship. The Soviet union may be gone but I'm feeling an Iron Curtain coming real close. The former Soviet leadership must be having one hell of a laugh.
