Obama: Raising the Debt Ceiling ‘Does Not Increase Our Debt’

The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit
is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. government
can’t pay its own bills. ... I therefore intend to oppose the effort to
increase America’s debt limit.” — Then-Sen. Barack Obama, floor speech
in the Senate, March 16, 2006

On Wednesday, President Obama spoke at a Business Roundtable to
discuss pressing issue concerning Americans. `While Obama addressed
several important issues including immigration and partisan politics in
Washington, the President spoke at length about the looming fight to
defund Obamacare and the opposition to, once again, raising the debt
ceiling and, by extension, raising the national debt.

Obama candidly discussed his disdain for the GOP efforts to hinder
the continual raising of the debt ceiling and also claiming that raising
the debt ceiling does not increase our debt.

“Now, this debt ceiling,” Obama began, “I just want to remind people
in case you haven’t been keeping up — raising the debt ceiling, which
has been done over a hundred times, does not increase our debt; it does
not somehow promote profligacy. All it does is it says you got to pay
the bills that you’ve already racked up, Congress. It’s a basic function
of making sure that the full faith and credit of the United States is
preserved.

And I’ve heard people say, ‘well, in the past, there have been
negotiations around raising the debt ceiling.’ It’s always a tough vote
because the average person thinks raising the debt ceiling must mean
that we’re running up our debt, so people don’t like to vote on it, and,
typically, there’s some gamesmanship in terms of making the President’s
party shoulder the burden of raising the — taking the vote. And then
there’s some political campaign later that smacks them around for
saying, Joe Smith voted to raise the debt ceiling by $2 trillion. And it
sounds terrible and it’s a fun talking point for politics, but it
always gets done.”

President Obama’s claim that raising the debt ceiling does not, in
fact, raise the national debt seems to run contrary to the realities of
debt accumulation. If the debt ceiling has been raised over a hundred
times, it appears doing so is as a result of accommodating increased
national debt.

Obama also claimed that conservatives in Congress are attempting to
“extort” the Democrats on the issue of the debt ceiling and further
threatening to shut government down over funding Obamacare.

However, leading conservative and Tea Party lawmakers have clearly
stated that the intention of the effort to defund Obamacare is not to
shut down government, but to fund a government divorced from the
economic anchor that is the increasingly economically unsustainable
Obamacare healthcare overhaul.

Obama and many tax-and-spend liberal lawmakers are not being honest
about the nature of debt and the serious economic insolvency of
Obamacare. Ten-year projections from the date of implementation shows a
$1.8 trillion price tag for taxpayers for Obamacare- double the $900
billion estimated cost Obama touted.

If President Obama and leading Congressional Democrats insist on
being dishonest about the real instability of the Affordable Care Act,
it is necessary for Republicans to cut away the healthcare package that
remains far from economically viable.

I still pay my bills without raising the debt ceiling. Why can't obama? If it means there won't be more debt, then what's wrong with keeping the debt ceiling where it is? That jackass in the white house thinks everyone is stupid and blind to his double talk! There are some who are. They are called liberals. They don't pay attention and they don't ask questions. They just blindly follow and wonder later how we got in this mess!

As much as it pains me- I must admit- OBAMA IS CORRECT on this one- Raising the debt ceiling does NOT raise the debt- it just gives you the ability to raise the debt quasi- legally.

But of course- we all know- that the debt will continue to rise whether we raise the ceiling or not- they will just play a shell game and accidentally lose a few trillion $$$ somewhere- and then rediscover it when convenient

raising the ceiling is tantamount to getting a new credit card-

just because you get the card does not mean you have to use it, so, no the debt does not go up- just your ability to spend goes up. However, we all know that he and Congress can't wait to get that card activated- Neiman Markups has a great sale on wrecked Ferrari's and Lamborghini's.

Obama as Senator ... "The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.:

Using the best Snake Eating It's Own Tail logic, we must raise the debt ceiling so we can pay off our obligations. Then we will create more obligations and run up more debt so we can come back here again and say it's irresponsible not to raise the debt ceiling in order to pay for these obligations that we have. But none of this actually raises the debt in any way. Sure we need more money to pay our bills, but that doesn't mean we actually owe more, right.

The debt ceiling is just the limit on what we can borrow. Spending is what Congress has authorized. If we do not raise the limit, it means that we can't pay our bills for services that the government contracted for, and for things the government bought. We still owe the money; we just can't pay those we owe.
