Obama legalizing gay marriage... Do you think he did it because he actually supports gay rights? Or do you think he did it just for the publicity?

As happy as I am about gay marriage -possibly- being legalized; I don't think he supports it because he actually supports us. I firmly believe he did it to get more votes from the gay population.

**Edit**
Yes I realize I made a mistake in the question. And before you get all pissy and start being a bunch of smart asses... Yes I know he does not have the power to legalize gay marriage.

I believe he supports gay rights and he had to put an end to the speculation after Biden's remarks on TV. I think he saw that this as an opportunity to finally come to terms with the issue and make his position known.

He didn't end DADT for votes, he didn't stop support for DOMA to get votes, and he ABSOLUTELY did not extend gay rights to US foreign policy to get votes.

Hilary Clinton’s landmark Human Rights Day speech
"As I listened to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s landmark Human Rights Day speech last week before a United Nations audience in Geneva, I was overwhelmed with emotion. I was not alone in wiping tears away during the speech. Many others from our delegation of U.S. and global activists – State Department officials too – were equally touched by the secretary’s words. When it was over, I had never been prouder as an American, as an activist and as a lesbian."

BH learned a long time ago that Homosexuals vote at the rate of about 110%. (Or perhaps slightly even more.) Of course he is going to tap-into-that (NPI). He does not care about the Black Ministers, as they will not vote against him; but instead they will not vote for him if they don't like what he said. [There's a big difference there.] That way they can truthfully admit that they didn't vote for him. Most of them are not even going to vote, anyway. The Homosexual is a Voting Machine; that's what it's all about.

That "IF" is the point that I am making . . . They ALWAYS VOTE . . . The whole idea is for the Politician who is using them, just has to put something on the Ballot about them, and then for sure they will vote for that particular politician, as a reward.

People who actually notice what is going on actually knew that the likelihood was very high that Obama supported gay rights and gay marriage before he said that he did. There are two reasons for this:

    1. He has several gay friends. People with actual friends who are gay are much more likely to be supportive.

    2. He is a member of the United Church of Christ. The UCC has supported gay rights since the foundation of the church and has, denominationally, supported gay marriage for decades, finally formalizing that support in a public statement that can be found here: http://www.ucc.org/lgbt/issue... in 2005.

The president knew that the likelihood was high that he would lose more votes than he would gain by supporting gay marriage, since it is still a very divisive issue, but he made his public statement anyway.

That statement was in line with what I had always assumed that he privately thought and his actions were, as nearly everything he does has been since the beginning, highly principled.

His call for the decision to be made at the state level is in accord with the 10th amendment and is also the same "route" followed to end miscegenation laws.

I honor him for the courage that doing this took - and in fact, certainly think that any thinking lgbt person or supp...

No need to be a smart ass. The question I asked was simply referring to him supporting it. I'm well aware that he has now power to legalize it himself.
I realized my mistake a few seconds after posting this and to my dismay I have not found a way to edit it to fix my mistake.

Even if he actually does support gay rights? He's a politician. This was politically motivated.

    Doesn't make it wrong, though.

"I firmly believe he did it to get more votes from the gay population."

Obama did not legalize gay marriage, he just supports it.

He already had support from the Gay population. Even if he didn't come out and support same sex marriage, gays would still vote for Obama. I think he believes in it because he is a liberal and the majority of liberals support it. However, it may also cost him votes, especially in the religious black community. A large percentage of black people do not support gay marriage. It will be interesting.
