ANALYSIS/OPINION:

“Before he enter on the execution of his office, he shall take the following oath or affirmationI do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.*

“* Unless, you know, 224 years from now, whoever happens to president simply decides he really doesn’t want to do that.”

— Article II, Section 1, Clause 8 of Barack Obama’s U.S. Constitution

The Founders set the course in a simple, concise, 35-word affirmation — the president’s top job is to “preserve, protect and defend” the Constitution. The chief executive does, of course, have other responsibilities, but his guardianship of the document they had just written was deemed by the Founders to be of such great import that they made him swear it — aloud, in front of witnesses.

In 1884, Congress, having no set oath of office, wrote its own: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same …”

Little did they know then that 128 years later, America would face just that: a domestic threat to the U.S. Constitution.

From the very beginning, the president and his administration made clear they had no intention of enforcing laws they didn’t like. Mr. Obamaand his minions decided that they would simply stop enforcing the Defense of Marriage Act, no longer prosecute growers of “medical” marijuana, and let some states walk away from provisions in the No Child Left Behind law (which, by the way, was co-authored by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, Massachusetts Democrat, and passed the Senate by a 91-8 vote).

Mr. Obama’s Justice Department has even more flagrantly flouted the laws of the land. Out of the blue, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., the nation’s chief law enforcement officer, reinterpreted America’s gambling laws (and dumped the decision on Christmas Eve so as to avoid scrutiny). More recently, Mr. Holder has decided to thwart congressional oversight by refusing to release documents on the disastrous “Fast and Furious” gun-running scheme, and he is actively fighting Florida for trying to expunge dead people from its voter rolls.

Now comes Mr. Obama’s decision to stop enforcing America’s immigration laws. The new policy states that illegal immigrants who were younger than 16 when they entered the country are eligible for a two-year exemption from deportation. Of course, the “deferred action process,” as Homeland Security Secretary Janet A. Napolitano called it, will apply to illegals up to age 30. (Think when they legally get their driver’s licenses they will also be handed a voter registration card?)

The increasingly desperate Mr. Obama, once a constitutional professor, knows full well he is circumventing Congress. In March 2011 he told a group of young Hispanics: “America is a nation of laws, which means I, as the president, am obligated to enforce the law. I don’t have a choice about that. That’s part of my job.

Congress passes the law. The executive branch’s job is to enforce and implement those laws,” he said. “There are enough laws on the books by Congress that are very clear in terms of how we have to enforce our immigration system that for me to simply through executive order ignore those congressional mandates would not conform with my appropriate role as president.”

So why now? Politics. The Hispanic population in Florida, Virginia, Nevada, New Mexico and Colorado may well decide the November election, and with working-class whites, religious blacks, disenchanted young people and Jews fleeing in droves, Mr. Obama is looking to shore up his support, even if that means violating his oath to protect the Constitution.

Continuing his nonstop campaign of division — black against white, rich against poor, straight against gay, religious against secular, race against race — the president is seeking to build whatever loose coalition of support he can. Forget bipartisanship; a coalition of the middle, Mr. Obama’s sole path to victory, he thinks, is to stir up so much discontent within different strata that he can win re-election.

Of course, the liberals who whined about President George W. Bush’s signing statements haven’t made a peep about Mr. Obama’s Napoleonic power grab.

“What’s ironic,” columnist Charles Krauthammer noted, “is for eight years, the Democrats have been screaming about the imperial presidency with the Bush administration — the nonsense about the unitary executive. This is out-and-out lawlessness.”

But that doesn’t matter when you are King Barack. The Founders were determined to make sure no American leader ever had the power King George III enjoyed. Which is why they also wrote this in the Constitution: “The president, vice president and all civil officers of the United States, shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.”

ok lets see 1996 clinton, 2000 thru 2012 bush, and 2008 thru 2012 obama, were said to violate the constitution but none of shown any violations yet. it does seem the domestic enemies of the constitution are those that refuse to read the constitution and say that everything that is not to their liking is unconstitutional.

It is the republicans who are the domestic enemy of the constitution. One just needs to review who is leading the country when an economic collapse happens. It is generally a republican who is practicing socialism for the rich, the active transfer of wealth from the middle class to the rich.

Once again your Liberal blindness forgets who signed the bill that made the banks loan to those that could not afford it, Clinton. And you forget who tried to stop that practice, Bush.

And don't forget who controlled the Congress the last two years of Bush's Presidency, Democrats. And who controlled the first two years of Obama, Democrats. Nice try, but a failure nonetheless.
  • ehrhornp zbacku 2012/06/18 16:43:05

And someone has forgotten who controlled congress at the time. GW had a republican congress and was able to get them to do anything he wanted which in the end crashed the economy.

I am not saying that the democrats are without sin but the republicans were the cause of the problem by deciding not to regulate business. GW made this decision on day one.

Politicians in both parties are at fault, but far and away the Democrats are more to blame for the destruction and the length of its continuation. It is a mirror image of the destruction caused and length of the last great recession/depression that FDR was responsible for lengthening.

Baloney. When the middle class has been squeezed like the republican have done under G W Bush, an economic downturn is predictable. Democrats are at fault in not pushing hard enough to end the tax cuts for the rich and not ending immediately the Bush wars. Republicans are at fault as they stole the 2000 election and destroyed a balanced federal budget in favor of socialism for the rich. Stupidity to the max. Stop supporting socialism for the rich. Shame this country refuses to learn from history.

The Democrats hunger for more taxes to add to their spending is not only killing the rich, but the middle class and the poor. What is going to happen to the poor (the 53% who paid no income taxes in 2009), when there is no more to take from the wealthy and give to them? Everyone needs to pay their fair share and currently only the wealthy are doing so.

Why is it that the economy generally does better under democratic leadership? Face it socialism for the rich does not help the overall economy. I suggest you read the following and note how republicans are getting worse:

Congressional control is much more important than who the President was, until Obama became President with a fully Democrat Congress our annual GDP growth has always been fairly reasonable (above 2.4%). When Government spending gets out of control, we have problems and that has happened when both parties have controlled Government.

You realize that one has to go back to Reagan to find a republican president who had decent growth. Both Bushes had terrible numbers. Growth has been on a general decline since Kennedy and really dropped when the Bushes were in power. Hopefully this will be a lesson for those who want to support Jeb Bush.
    Kennedy - 5.2
    Johnson - 5.1
    Nixon - 3.0
    Carter - 3.2
    Reagan - 3.5
    Bush I - 2.1
    Clinton 3.6
    Buh II 2.3

Such lies but considering only one republican president was better than Carter doesn't seem to make your case. You might think a 2.1-2.3 growth rate is better than 3.2 but fortunately most will not.

You're one sick puppy ... lies? I would say you are delusional, but I'll go with Michael Savage ... Liberalism is a Mental Disorder. BTW, you need to read all the items posted. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL There was a beautiful response toward the bottom that just blew you out of the water. LOLOLOL ... you got to love it when a liberal progressive sites a link and the link disproves his hypothesis. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

This response was date June 18 ...
Not taken into account in this analysis were the economic conditions inherited by a president. Republicans often inherited an economy already in or sinking into recession (Nixon in 1968, Reagan in 1981, Bush in 2001 and Obama in 2009(. Other presidents have inherited recovering or robust economies, as did Clinton in 1993 — in spite of his mantra of “it’s the economy, stupid.” To suggest that because economies did somewhat better under Democratic presidents than under Republicans simply does not answer the question of “why?” And how much of the poor performance of some Republican administrations can be laid to exogenous shocks such as the 9-11 attack on the nation and the ensuing wars, or the stultifying effects of Democratic programs and policies that distorted the marketplace? ....

Where is Paul Harvey when you need him? You need to look at the rest of the story.
  • ehrhornp Politic... 2012/06/18 19:56:23

Reagan had his big stock market crash in 1987. Was that still due to what he inherited? Bush inherited an economy that was weakening but still relatively stable. Then he worked on tax cuts for the rich instead of working on the Israel Palestine problem. So 9/11 happened. If GW had done his job, 9/11 would never have happened.

Clinton's tax increase was what really improved the economy during the last decade of the 20th century as true fiscal responsibility allowed interest rates to fall. The economy went to hell as GW reversed Clinton's policies. So we have 2 times now that the republicans have been proven wrong. When Clinton increased taxes phony conservatives predicted an economic collapse worse than the great depression. Then when they reversed Clinton's tax increase they predicted that the federal budget would remain balanced. Neither proved true and only under GW Bush did the worse recession since the great depression occur.

Thanks for taking the bait, allowing me to clobber you again. lol

I live with myself because I at least research things and don't swallow the whole turkey like you do. Obviously, you are parroting someone else's liberal spin on things. Did you even bother to go to a neutral site for confirmation? I bet not. You have at least half the story, which is typical liberal progressive behavior.

Shame on YOU. Go do the rest of your research and then come back and tell me that you have everything. AND to prove how stupid you are. Yes I said stupid even though that's not something I usually do.

If you are too ignorant to understand the "where is Paul Harvey when you need him" comment, that proves YOU are out of touch with a whole lot. IF you remember, or if you knew the format of the Paul Harvey program, he would always say, "and now for the rest of the story." I am fully aware that he died and also fully aware that you are totally missing the point that you don't have the rest of the story. Well, duh, big boy. If you can't understand that simple comment, you really haven't got the intellectual abilities to follow politics.
