EXCERPTS:The Obama administration announced last year that it would award $10 million to the company that could create a light bulb that was both eco-friendly and affordable. The winning LED bulb, made by Philips, is about to hit the market. There's only one problem: It costs $50. The price of your standard incandescent bulb, on the other hand, hovers in the $1 region. The $10 million award, dubbed the L Prize, is part of the government's plan to phase out all energy-wasting incandescent bulbs over the next several years. But could Obama's $50 light bulb possibly be worth its price?

New lighting technology rarely hits the ground running. The Philips LED bulb should not be dismissed any more than Edison's incandescent bulbs should have been dismissed in favor of candles and oil lanterns. New technology always begins pricey and drops over time thanks to innovation. LED is already doing very well in commercial lighting, where the opportunities for savings are much greater. Residential adoption will come later.

Nobody is ordering anyone to buy the LED bulb. It's a symbolic beginning of new technology, not supposed to be a viable alternative yet. VCR's and Microwave ovens weren't affordable at first either, remember? LED lighting is progressing very quickly in roadway and parking lot lighting, especially in colder climates. Residential ltg will be later.

I might. Considering the costs in the long term, they are cheaper (again in the long term) than any other type of bulb. They are also more efficient (thus lowering my light bill as well. Not to mention the fact that they don't have mercury in it.

Not affordable, not eco-friendly, not first.

I remember hearing C Crane ads for LED light bulbs on Coast To Coast Am back in 2010 and at the time they were selling for about $50. So unless they were repackaged Phillips bulbs, C Crane was first. Also, led bulbs are not all that eco-friendly since they contain toxic metals.

With the exception of how much electricity they use, incandescent bulbs are by far the most eco-friendly light bulbs available. They present the least possible risk to your home's environment. There is no possibility of a toxic release from incandescent bulbs. They do not produce any EMF radiation either, CF bulbs and many LED bulbs do.

Global warming is a theory, toxic exposure is a proven and predictable danger.

I will not pay that much for a light bulb. And since the administration has planned to ban general use incandescent bulbs you can still buy rough use incandescents basiclly the same buld with thicker glass and heavier filliment. You can buy them at many retail outlets or order them at Nucandescent.com.

Regardless of these new bulbs..many people can't afford to spend that kind of money in one shot :!! This is only for those who are working (not many right now)...or for stupid politicians forcing more crap down our throats. Sell them, but keep our normal bulbs for those who can't afford them. Another give away to Philips. I am sure they love Obama and his czars.

The Philips LED bulb costs between $19 and $39 depending on the lumens, not $50. You can get them at Home Depot and Lowes right now. They have a color temperature of 2800 degrees, about the same as a soft white incandescent. They use 1/5 to 1/4 the electricity and have a life-span approximately 15 times that of an incandescent. So far, they've saved me 15% on my electric bill with no loss of illumination.

    Get your facts straight.

And how many fires have they started. Better check it out. Still more expensive than a regular light bulb. I actually tried them and monitored my electric bill. My electric bill normally is around $145.00 a month, give or take a few dollars. With the new bulbs I did not really notice any difference. Guess it could have been one or two dollars.

NO fires from LED lights! You are making bogus and false statements about LEDs. They use 80% less than incandescents. Replace all incandescents with LEDs and you would save a bunch on your electricity bill.

How much does each one sold cost the tax payers? GM is sellng the Volt for around $40,000 and it costs around $100,000 to make and we are paying the difference. The bulbs are probobly being subsidized too.

There are no government funded bulb subsidies, but check with your local utilities, they might have something. LED bulbs use substantially less energy. The up-front cost is still too high, but it will come down in time. They are perfect in some applications, not wise yet in others. When was the last time you saw a perfect solution?

Compared to incandescents, they are far less expensive during the life of the bulb. While you pay more up front, you save far, far more in electricity and replacement bulbs.
