Where do you guys come up with this nonsense? The islands in question have been recognized as Russian territory since the turn of the 20th Century. And in fact, the treaty that formally recognized the current maritime boundaries was signed by George H.W. Bush in 1991 and ratified by Congress (both Alaska Senators voted in favor of it). The islands are all close to the Russian mainland and the United States has never made a serious claim to them.
The United States claiming these islands would be the equivalent of France claiming title to Nantucket.

Apparently, the regular "professional reporters" consider Obama giving away islands belonging to Alaska and part of the United States as no big deal. Obama is giving these islands to Russia for free, no cost, $zero money or any other consideration. Guess what? The state legislature in Alaska (still one of our 50 states) voted several times in opposition to THE GIVEAWAY! This is despite the fact the Alaska Legislature has passed resolutions of opposition - but the State Department doesn't seem to care.
The imperiled Arctic Ocean islands include Wrangel, Bennett, Jeannette and Henrietta. Wrangel became American in 1881 with the landing of the U.S. Revenue Marine ship Thomas Corwin. The landing party included the famed naturalist John Muir. It is 3,000 square miles in size.
Northwest of Wrangel are the DeLong Islands, named for George Washington DeLong, the captain of USS Jeannette. Also in 1881, he discovered and claimed these three islands for the United States. He named them for the voyage co-sponsor, New York Citynewspaper publisher James Gordon Bennett. The ship's crew received a hero's welcome back in Washington, and Congress awarded them gold medals.
In the Bering Sea at the far west end of the Aleutian chain are Copper Island, Sea Lion Rock and Sea Otter Rock. They were ceded to the U.S. in Seward's 1867 treaty with Russia.
Now is the time for the Obama administration to stand up for U.S. and Alaskan rights and invaluable resources. The State Department's maritime agreement is a loser - it gives us nothing in return for giving up Alaska's sovereign territory and invaluable resources. On June 1, 1990, Secretary of State James Baker signed an executive agreement with Eduard Shevardnadze, the former U.S.S.R. foreign minister. It specified that even though the treaty had not been ratified, the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. agreed to abide by the terms of the treaty beginning June 15, 1990. The Senate ratified the U.S.-U.S.S.R. Maritime Boundary Treaty in 1991, which was then signed by President George Bush.

Finally, it is not true that a President can abrogate a ratified treaty with the stroke of a pen, and it is ridiculous to even suggest that a Secretary of State could do so. Besides, I thought you folks didn't want President Obama signing any executive orders.
Looking at the links above , The state of Alaska , Fish and Wildlife , USDA all considered Wrangel Island to by US territory as of 2008 ( need to call the numbers listed for current status ) .
The issue of these Islands ownership only took on heightened interest with the prospects of the Law of the Sea Treaty that raised the stakes on ownership.

You are correct the articles I had read may have cited erroneous information .
Here it is, the Islands were sold by Russia in 1867 and paid for by the US. That means they are part of the US territory and obama had no right to partition Alaska and give the Islands to Russia. It does not matter how close to the mainland of Russia they are.
