Maersk Alabama Capt. Richard Phillips,
right, with Cmdr. Frank Castellano of the
USS Bainbridge, after being rescued.

WASHINGTON – While Barack Obama is basking in praise for his "decisive" handling of the Somali pirate attack on a merchant ship in the India Ocean, reliable military sources close to the scene are painting a much different picture of the incident – accusing the president of employing restrictive rules of engagement that actually hampered the rescue of Capt. Richard Phillips and extended the drama at sea for days.

Multiple opportunities to free the captain of the Maersk Alabama from three young pirates were missed, these sources say – all because a Navy SEAL team was not immediately ordered to the scene and then forced to operate under strict, non-lethal rules of engagement.

They say the response duty office at the Pentagon was initially unwilling to grant an order to use lethal force to rescue Phillips. They also report the White House refused to authorize deployment of a Navy SEAL team to the location for 36 hours, despite the recommendation of the on-scene commander.

The White House also turned down two rescue plans offered up by the Seal commander on the scene and the captain of the USS Bainbridge.

The SEAL team operated under rules of engagement that required them to do nothing unless the hostage's life was in "imminent' danger.

In fact, when the USS Bainbridge dispatched a rigid-hull inflatable boat to bring supplies to the Maersk Alabama, it came under fire that could not be returned even though the SEAL team had the pirates in their sights.

Many hours before the fatal shots were fired, taking out the three young pirates, Phillips jumped into the Indian Ocean with the idea of giving the snipers a clear target. However, the SEAL team was still under orders not to shoot.

Hours later, frustrated by the missed opportunities to resolve the standoff, the commander of the Bainbridge and the captain of the Navy SEAL team determined they had operational authority to evaluate the risk to the hostage, and took out the pirates at the first opportunity – finally freeing Phillips.

I did notice that, and I wondered if I had missed something because I only saw snippets of the coverage. I heard Captain Phillips praise the Seals, but he never mentioned O; I thought that was very telling.

Had not noticed that, but thanks for pointing it out. Was in the middle of family issues, but thinking about it, you're right - Capt. Phillips did only praise the Seals.

He named the Seals, and many other groups and people that
influenced his rescue..thought that was really cool! No mention of O.
Also noticed , while channel surfing, that they credited O. with the
surge in Iraq...what a joke....Bush asked for it and Congress wouldn't
give....it was the commander on the ground that kept asking for
    surge..not O. lol

Nothing that O does or opps doesn't do - does not surprise me. I begged people not to vote for him... I told people he was non American, that he has an agenda... but O used his crafty ways, to gain the highest office in the land. Thank the Lord the Captain did not die and was rescued. I give all praise to the Navy Seals and Military ... They are the REAL heroes, not O ..

The ones who need to be prosecuted for putting this Captain in harms way are those in Washington. The one at the helm!

We have a man in office who extends his hand to Chevez and took his sweet time in the rescue of Captain Phillips.

Phillips life was at all times, in imminent danger.

According to the Oregon News, dated April 12, 2009 this statement was issued:

The Defense Department twice asked President Barack Obama for permission to use military force to rescue Phillips, most recently late Friday evening, U.S. officials said. On Saturday morning, Obama signed off on the Pentagon's request, as he had a day earlier, said the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

"I share the country's admiration for the bravery of Capt. Phillips and his selfless concern for his crew," Obama said in his first comments on the situation. "His courage is a model for all Americans."...

He added that the United States needs help from other countries to deal with the threat of piracy and to hold pirates accountable.

Not that my opinion matters, but O added to the graveness of this horrific situation and by delaying the rescue of Captain Philliips, further put the Captain in Harms Way

American's ALL American's are at risk!

I don't know of ONE person that did vote for him. Never had to debate the subject. That captain should have been helped the second that the Navy got close enough to see him. Oh but no, wouldn't want to infringe on the rights of some lowlife pirates? WTF!!!!!

Doesn't surprise me........he loves that cool laid back presense doing and saying nothing projects...........just look what he did when the congress was dealing with the economic crisis during the campaign......"Call me if you need me!" Then when he finally emerged it was with a dozen or more economic advisors, and of course his BFF, T.L.Prompter.

The really sad thing is, remember the pilots who saved their passengers after they landed in the Hudson?
Well, Barry was sure to tour them all over. They were at the inauguration, they were at his first speech in front of Congress.

Well, so far no one in the media has yet to say anything about the captain or his crew even visiting the White House or meeting the BO himself.
Hes just another "Pawn" in the big socialist game of chess.
