Mohamed Morsi, a member of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood party, won the election in Egypt. President Obama called to congratulate Morsi and said the US will stand by Morsi during its transition. The transition may not go smoothly as the Egyptian military tries to hold onto power defiant of the Islamic extremists who now control the government.

"We look forward to working together with President-elect Morsi and the government he forms, on the basis of mutual respect, to advance the many shared interests between Egypt and the United States," press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement.

Politicio reports:PThe White House congratulated Egypt's president-elect Mohamed Morsi on his victory in that country's presidential election, calling it a "milestone" in the country's transition to democracy. President Obama called Morsi Sunday evening, telling him that the United States would stand by Egypt in its transitional period...

And I wish him all the luck, as he's gonna need it.
The man's a Moderate, and actually a Progressive/Reformer muslim--that's why I wish him luck, as he's NOT going to be liked by islamic hard-liners at all, so I'm expecting to hear of assassination attempts within a year of his election.
OR, he'll suddenly reverse course, meaning that someone (guess who?) is threatening his family.
The Muslim Brotherhood, I'm still digging out info on, as it's a bit fuzzy in places as to who's actually in charge.
Morsi though, he's a good man with one Hell of a tough road ahead.

The president doing what he does best. Bowing down and apologizing for America. The man is a weak, yellow-bellied, lily-livered snake.

He was democratically elected by the people of Egypt and he seems pretty rational so why shouldn't we congratulate him? Mexico just elected a president from the notoriously corrupt PRI party and we congratulated him.

Morsi did say that he would uphold all international accords and obligations (meaning peace agreements with Israel). He also did mention that he wouldn't Islamize Egypt because he wanted it to be a place for everyone to prosper.

With that kind of rhetoric, I'm not sure why the US would be on such a tear to bring him down. If anything, the WH should be keeping a close eye on him, which I'm sure they are by standing by Egypt during its transitional period.

I'm not sure what anyone else would have the president do. Should he call up and tell him that he's dead if he does anything that the US doesn't agree with? Should he start making threats on the first day?

Why are conservatives so short-sided. Remember when Reagan sat down with the Taliban and said they are just like America's founding fathers? Remember that? Obama's doing fine right now.

This is a real sign of progress. Replace Mumbarak with a Muslim brotherhood president. It is astonishing that he would think this was a measure of success of democracy. It is a blow to women and the citizens of Egypt. A travesty of democracy if you will. I have little hope for the future of Egypt, if they willingly vote in regime's such as this. Egypt is lost, and the U.S. helped them to get lost.

My father was a diplomat in the State Department for over 30 years, as a result I was born overseas and grew up in various parts of the world as he served our country (he was also a WWII, Korea and Vietnam vet) and was around diplomats (ours and from other countries) my entire life.

I got it, a lot of folks don't like Obama, understod. But to take any, and every, action and twist it into some sort of ineptitude is childish. And, in this case, shows a clear lack of understanding of the art of diplomacy. Morsi was elected by his people. Funny, we forget that democracy means that the folks in that country elect who they want...not who we want.

Of course he should call to congratulate Morsi. Bush, Reagan, Clinton, any President of intelligence would have done the same.

Conservatives (remember much) - you stated that we have forgotten that democracy means that the folks in the country elect who they want. Yes the Nazi party was also elected to many seats and moved Hitler to the pinnacle of power. We haven't forgotten this warning. The USSR also has many elections.......enough said.

Of course he approves. He has fanned the flames of discontent with every action he has taken since day one. He has praised the parasites who occupied and trashed our streets. He would love riots and chaos so his commrades the Muslim Brotherhood can take America too. This is what comes of having a President who is not constitutionally fit for office. Having America's enemy in the most powerful office in the land was what the constitution was made to prevent. The DNC has committed the worst crime on America ever, by putting Obama up for election. While knowing he is not constitutionally certified.

There is no democracy posible for Egypt now, only Sharia oppression and tyranny. Obama is doing what he always does lie. He would have to be a decent man, to protest what will only be atrocities against humanity in the offing. Obama will never be a decent man.

Amazing so many would disagree. Fact is our leaders have had to get along with leaders of other countries that we didn't like. This is just plain common curtesy and it would be idiotic if he didn't do this.

To people who disapprove: So democracy should not be respected? Should we go and assassinate the new leader? Bet you call yourselves christian too. lol

Diplomacy is a tricky business, and not always an easy thing. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. This guy, and his cronies can be quite dangerous. It will be in everyone's best interest to approach them carefully and perhaps gently nudge them in a safe direction. I doubt that the President is anymore thrilled with Morsi than Morsi is with Obama.

The new president has a PhD from a Southern California University and his kids are American citizens. (an article claims he worked at NASA and only American citizens can work there) He also stepped down from his position with the Muslim brotherhood.

The military, SCAF , passed a decree making the president powerless. Overall, it looks like nothing really has changed; the military will continue to do the bidding of the US while a figurehead president will come along for the ride. As long as we give them billions of dollars, everything should stay the same.

    1) It is appropriate that an elected head of state congratulate another elected head of state.
    2) The people of Egypt elected the man. Do you pretend that you know what is better for Egyptians than Egyptians do?
    3) What has the Muslim Brotherhood ever done to the US to cause us to have animosity?

He may have but I am sure that Prescott Bush did. The US and Germany were not at war until eight years (almost nine) after both Hitler and FDR assumed office.
