In 1996 there was an election strategy called "bundling votes" where a candidate could run under two parties. In most cases it was a democrat and some other progressive, socialist or communist party.
Obama was able to bundle his votes from both the democratic party and the democratic socialist New Party.
Bundling votes is now illegal.
