COLUMBUS, Ohio — President Obama’s reelection
campaign filed a federal lawsuit against Ohio’s top elections official Tuesday
in a dispute over the battleground state’s law that restricts in-person early
voting in the three days leading up to Election Day.

The lawsuit, filed in Columbus, follows a series of election-law changes that
were passed by the state’s Republican-controlled legislature and signed by Gov.
John Kasich (R).

Obama’s campaign and other Democrats argue that the law unfairly ends
in-person early voting for most Ohioans on the Friday evening before the Tuesday
election while allowing military and overseas voters to cast ballots in person
until Monday.

Before the changes to the law, local election boards had the discretion to
set their own hours for such voting on the days before the election. And
in-person voting on the weekend varied among the state’s 88 counties.

The state’s elections chief, Secretary of State Jon Husted, has argued that
all counties should have the same early-voting hours and be open on the same
days. Husted and his fellow Republicans contend it is unfair that a voter in one
county can cast an early ballot on a day when a voter in a neighboring county
cannot.

Obama for America was joined in the lawsuit by the Democratic National
Committee and the Ohio Democratic Party.

Ohio is one of 32 states that allow voters to cast early ballots by mail or
in person without an excuse. About 30 percent of the total vote in swing states
— or roughly 1.7 million ballots — came in ahead of Election Day in the last
presidential election.

Obama won Ohio in 2008, but Republican challenger Mitt Romney is expected to
make a strong play for it in November.

I find it so disingenuous that the progressives, moderates, liberals, democrats or whatever moniker they have decided to hide behind now, scream VOTER FRAUD, you're just trying to suppress the vote of immigrants and poor people, when people want the requirement of an I.D. to vote.
And then do everything in their power to keep the very people risking their lives everyday to afford them the liberty to vote in the first place from voting....they should get as much time as they NEED to get their ballots in...and those opposing their right to vote should be shamed and held accountable.

It really is an Issue to the DEM's....
The Military Absentee Vote comes in from All Out of State Bases, Countries and Ships...They have 45 Days Before the Nov Vote to Receive and Return...The GOV does all the Issueing and Collection, then Distributes to each State....ALL athe the Same time...Which is Just a few Days Prior to the Day of the Vote...Those then Need to be Verified and Counted...
This was whay States that had Early Voting were give the Choice of Extending the Vote for Military..ABSENTEE..the 3-added days to Receive and Verify and Count...
OHIO has Now Denied that 3-days...Again, denying the Military their Right to Vote...
The Citizens have 30-Days...The Military Absentee, is always at the Mercy of the GOV...
2010, these Ballots were issued 21 days late, leaving 3-weeks to deliver to Outposts ships at sea, etc, Collect and return...They were returned Late...Congress Denied Them to be counted...
    2008, 90,000 Ballots disappeared..never found
2004, 15% Of The Military Vote was Denied by Congress to be counted, for Being Late...

And so does everyone else. The title to this is quite dishonest. The lawsuit doesn't seek to take away the three extra days from the military, but to give those three days back to the rest of Ohioans that republicans just took away. Typical dishonesty from Romney and Repugs here, trying to spin the suit as something completely different from what it is actually about.

    WRONG....
The Ohioans have 30-days in which to get their A$$ of the Couch and get to the Polls...
The Military Vote is the Absentee vote of the Military who are OUT os State and cannot Get to the Polls...THEY receive their Ballots from the GOV, 45-days before the Polls Open..Then those Ballots are collected from Each Duty Station, and Delivered to each State, in One Lump Delivery....
Those Three added Days..Alloowed BY Congress, are to Receive, Verify and Count...
Those Ballots are in the Possession of the GOV and are always Delivered Late and Counted Late...NOT the Troops Fault...and NOW...You Want to Deny them that Added time to have their Votes Count after Getting Wounded and Killed in Lands they cannot Leave to get to their Home Town To Vote In.....while Ohioans have 30-days to show up in person...????

I used to live in Ohio. Voting by absentee ballot is the rule, not the exception. Certain counties had disastrous problems with electronic voting machines, so they encouraged people to sign up for absentee ballots instead. The system worked well enough. They send you a ballot, you fill it out, and mail it back. The ID requirement was your driver's license number or last 4 digits of SSN.

It takes a while for the military to get ballots shipped back to the US before they are delivered by the post office. Three extra days for international military mail is a reasonable accommodation.

A few alternative solutions come to mind:

    1. Give everyone 3 extra days for absentee ballots and tell Obama's campaign to STFU.
    2. Get the states to distribute military ballots sooner, so the soldiers can vote early and allow extra time for delivery.
    3. Let the military print absentee ballots, distribute them, collect the finished ballots, tabulate the results and report back to the individual states. This would speed up distribution and processing to the point where 3 extra days would not be needed.

Since a LOT of them are overseas, they deserve a few extra days to get their votes in.

Also, they are often out on training in places further away than their home city.

GEEZ, will this underhanded fool NOT do anything to reward illegals and penalize the military?

The Military Does Not Deserve the Three Added Days...Explain Why
    elijahin24
1.We have just as much freedom to get to the polls as anyone else, and if we can't, we can do absentee voting.
    2. While I appreciate everyone trying to be grateful to us, this is too much. We don't need this.
    3. We swore to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States. Giving us extra time to vote, which is NOT available to the rest of the citizens, is a violation of YOUR Fourteenth Amendment right to equal protection. I don't see how we can claim to defend the Constitution, when it is on our behalf that it is violated.
I'm a soldier and a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I'm proud of my service, and I can get to the polls on election day, or on one of the already established early-voting days; just like you.

The Time is NOT for You To Vote, BUT to Have YOUR Absentee Form Delivered, Collected And Delivered, Then Counted...
That Whole Process is Under the Control Of The GOV...Last Two Elections...
2008, 1/4 of the Military Vote was Denied for a few days late...Military Vote is 15% of Total Vote
2010, approx 30 k Votes were delivered late and Denied...
Not the Troops fault...Their GOV fault for Not Getting Them There..
Not To Mention, Deleivered All At One Time To Each State...100's of Thousands of Votes Take Time to Verify and Count
THIS Was The Reason this FED Law was Granted to the States, To INSURE the Military Vote Had Time to be Delivered and Counted...From Overseas and Military Bases where Absentee Ballot is Used...

No it's not. Research the whole story. This was 3 extra days of early voting, which is EXCLUSIVE to the military. If someone dropped the ball and DELIVERED our votes late, fix the DELIVERY problem. Don't change the laws to give us more time to vote than anyone else.

Get Your Facts Straight...Especially for a Military person...Have Honor for your Fellow Troop Whose Vote MAY Be Denied, Because the GOV delivered It Late, as in 2008 and again in 2010....Not the Troops Fault...But Their GOV fault for Not Delivering Their Ballot From Their Outpost, Base Or Ship, Where The GOV Collects Them, and From APO Mailbox....As YOU WELL KNOW..

If you REALLY want to fix this problem, the trick is not to give us extra days, to cast so few votes, that they won't make a difference anyway. The trick is to get voting machines, which use the internet to get our votes to our home-states, instantly. This is not a solution, nor is it an attempt to solve the problem. It's an attempt to LOOK like they want to solve the problem.

As one of those soldiers, I can tell you that we DO get to vote. We can vote by absentee ballot, and as long as the postmark is on election day or before; that vote will be counted. And if I'm stationed thousands of miles away, presumably in a war-zone, three extra days will not make any difference at all.
