Obama campaign: Mitt Romney should drop Donald Trump Obama campaign to Romney: Dump Trump Please do Not take this as I think Romney ought Not to dump Trump, but what the heck right does Obama have in telling him who to pick for VP, or to talk with until he makes up his mind? President Obama’s campaign is pushing Mitt Romney to disavow Donald Trump and highlight the mogul’s comments about the president’s birth certificate.
Romney and Trump are hosting a fundraiser together at the celebrity businessman’s Las Vegas hotel tonight.
A new Obama campaign Web video contrasts Romney’s acceptance of Trump with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who in 2008 confronted supporters who said they were “scared” of the Democratic candidate and called him “an Arab.”
The narrator sums it up this way: “Two Republican nominees. Only one willing to lead.”
In regards to the base, Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody laid out the argument this way:
“Associating with Donald Trump gives Mitt Romney a way of being brash without being brash. Trump is popular with a certain portion of the GOP, the portion that Romney doesn’t connect with. Trump’s bravado is not necessarily a bad thing for Romney because it connects him to a flamethrower and his audience without having to throw the flames himself.”
True enough — on both fronts. Asked Monday about Trump’s repeated questioning of Obama’s birthplace, Romney distanced himself from his wealthy supporter but did not condemn him.
“You know, I don’t agree with all the people who support me and my guess is they don’t all agree with everything I believe in,” he said. “But I need to get 50.1 percent or more, and I’m appreciative to have the help of a lot of good people.”
