Obama AWOL on Hurricane Isaac and Media are Silent

Mitt Romney’s already been to New Orleans to see the hurricane damage first hand. He smells victory in November and so he’s acting presidential. Republican Governor Bobby Jindal, who was slated to speak at the GOP Convention, made the right call and stayed in Louisiana to oversee cleanup operations.

Why isn’t President Obama hip-deep in the flood waters of Hurricane Isaac? Where is FEMA? Is the President golfing? Is he campaigning? Yes, he’s campaigning, and since Louisiana isn’t in play in November, he’s decided to go elsewhere, until some conservative sites turned his absence into a story.

This isn’t the first flooded area President Obama has ignored. When Nashville was under water in May of 2010, the president was nowhere to be found. It was also a media non-story. It didn’t fit their liberal narrative even though 21 people were killed in Nashville alone. Even though at least 30 counties in Tennessee were declared major disaster areas by the federal government, President Obama was AWOL.

I haven’t heard a peep from the media about Obama’s absence in Louisiana. The latest news is that he’s planning to appear presidential on Labor Day when the storm will be long gone. Consider the following:

“President Barack Obama, who in 2005 criticized then-President George Bush for not exhibiting a ‘greater sense of empathy’ toward the victims of Hurricane Katrina, told a campaign crowd at the University of Virginia on Wednesday afternoon [Aug. 29] — as people in Louisiana were dealing with what the National Hurricane Center called ‘life-threatening hazards’ caused by Hurricane Isaac — that he had discussed the hurricane on the telephone from Air Force One as he was flying East from a previous campaign event in Colorado.”

A series of phone calls? That’s it? Are you telling me that all George Bush had to do was make some phone calls and he wouldn’t have received any criticism?

How times have changed. President Bush was excoriated for his inaction. It was a constant drumbeat. Day in and day out the media and the Democrats attacked President Bush for not doing enough. Racism was thrown in for good measure. Singer Kanye West (who is black) said the following in a fund raising effort for the NBC telethon to raise money for Katrina victims in September of 2005: “George Bush doesn’t care about black people!” Using racist logic, are we to assume that Barack Obama (his white half) doesn’t care about black people?

Let’s not forget the comments that Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan made about the levees that were built to hold back the flood waters. He told his followers “that the levees in New Orleans may have been deliberately ‘blown up’ to kill the city’s black population. ‘I heard from a very reliable source who saw a 25 foot deep crater under the levee breach,’ Farrakhan explained. ‘It may have been blown up to destroy the black part of town and keep the white part dry.’”

While Farrakhan didn’t say who had blown up the levees, you know he was implying that it was done by a bunch of white guys bought and paid for by the Bush administration.

If a Republican president were in the White House during Hurricane Isaac’s rampage, there would have been a 24-hour slam on everything the president didn’t do to help the victim’s of the storm.

If the Republican President took time out to go to the bathroom during a hurricane, the media would report that he was more interested in his own water and that of the toilet than he is about the rising flood waters destroying homes in New Orleans and outlying regions.

He's going tomorrow. You know that a President has more demands on his time than a candidate.

As for the media, Isaac wasn't a disaster, so why would they spend much ink on it? After you've built up for a possible "Second Katrina," a few thousand displaced inhabitants is no big deal, right? I mean, there were MUSLIMS in Charlotte. Much more copy (i.e., SALES) in that "story."

Seems to me you protest too much. Seems to me also that you are trying to stir up a contraversy that doesn't exist. FEMA has been on the ground from DAY ONE. Something that DID NOT HAPPEN UNDER BUSH II.

    http://www.jacksonfreepress.c...

And there are more proofs out there that FEMA is doing the job it was created for. Micro managing is one of the worst traits of a leader. Make the assignments and expect that they get carried out. That is exactly what President Obama expected of FEMA and that is EXACTLY what they have done.

My cousin has been through this with Katrina. NO HELP got to him for more than a WEEK!!

He said today - email - that FEMA has been there since this whole process started and have taken an active support position in everything.

You can't stop Mother Nature from tearing things up but you can sure as well be there when she does.

FEMA was on hand ahead of time b/c Governor Bobby Jindal asked for federal assistance AHEAD of time. It was NOT Obama's doing. The states govern themselves and b/c of this, the federal government cannot move in until asked.

Oh horse pucks! I will say the same thing here that I did to all the Bush whiners about Katrina. The area is in a big enough mess and having the President with all his security and press entourage showing up. It only makes a bigger mess of things. Believe me on a good day with regular traffic having the President in your home town is a major pain in the ass. Hurricane victims need help not politics. That is all that Mitt Romney brought. Let Governor Jindal deal with this without the circus and get the help he needs from Washington.

I appreciate the fact that Mitt Romney has gone to New Orleans to see the trauma from Isaac - and to provide some support in whatever way he can. I've been following the reporting and have heard many say that the flooding has been even worse than it was with Katrina. I just hope that they get help as it is needed -- people are hurting. It's unfortunate that especially at this time any major event is going to be a potential headliner for political reasons and not because of the human factor. God bless them.

I see what you are getting at -- Obama did a part of what he is supposed to do -- "it's his job". There is, however, a difference in "talking about doing", "sending someone else to do", and "doing it yourself". I merely stated that I appreciate Mitt Romney for taking time to actually go to New Orleans -- I guess my bad was in not giving Obama his four seconds in the spotlight. My main concern here, if you will think about it, is "the people" -- the people who in some cases have lost family or friends, are suffering, are traumatized, and in many cases have lost all their material possessions.

So the President has to actually go to Louisiana and fill sandbags to shore up the levies himself right? Mitt definitely didn't help in any rescue missions while he was there either. In fact he told one person if they need help call 211. How much is that going to do? The President did what was in his power to do. what he was expected to do, but I guess maybe he does have to go down there and actually part the waters with his hands before the gets respect. What good is going down there to do a photo op?

With all that BHO has done to bring down the United States of America - and with what I believe he has planned to continue the destruction of the United States of America as we know it -- there is nothing he can do to be deserving of my respect.

Here we go with the talking points. He spent more than any other president. He wants to take from the rich and give to the poor. He is holding business hostage. Please. http://images.sodahead.com/pr...

I guess nobody will say anything about the fact that he had FEMA and the National Guard already posted in Louisiana 4 days before the hurricane hit.

Incumbent can't, or couldn't, be bothered with something as small as a disaster in NOLA until Mitt Romney decided to go. And then, Incumbent will continue to campaign up North and continue with his fund raisers until he could find a place to break in that busy schedule to take that dreary little trip down to Louisiana. And where is the media on this? Why, still in the back pocket of the Left. That is until some are let out to condem Governor Romney for going their before Incumbent.

I don't know where you live, but "up here" (where the remnants of Isaac reached) Isaac wasn't getting much air time. Why? Because nothing much happened. Holiday week-end, back to school, football, normal stuff -- that's IMPORTANT to the American people!!!!!

Given the number of questions here about the Jumah in Charlotte, Clint Eastwood, Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney last week, Isaac wasn't in the front of most people's minds here either.

I live in FL and we got swamped in our area, some of my southern neighbors are still under water. It is important to those affected, when the president ignores that we notice.

Golly, gosh - he had those 7 campaign stops and they give money - the disaster zone? Hell, they don't have any money for Obama. Surely, you do not expect him to cancel a money stop for a disaster - get your head right, the man has important priorities.
