Nobama wants to slash America's ballooning deficit in half by 2013 by cutting spending on the Iraq war, eliminating wasteful public programs and raising taxes on the wealthy, an administration official said on Saturday.
"The deficit this administration inherited was $1.3 trillion or 9.2 percent of GDP. By 2013, the end of the president's first term, the budget cuts the deficit to $533 billion or 3.0 percent of GDP," the official said on condition of anonymity.
"Most of the savings will come from winding down the war in Iraq, increased (tax) revenue from those making more than $250,000 a year, and savings from making government work more efficiently and eliminating programs that do not work," the official said.
Obama's administration is due to deliver the outline of its first budget on Thursday, for the 2010 fiscal year. It will reflect big increases in spending on public works that were part of the $787 billion economic recovery plan that Obama signed this week.
"Over time, the budget deficit will make it harder for our economy to grow and create jobs. That's why the president's budget for FY (fiscal year) 2010 puts us on the path to cut the deficit he inherited on January 20, 2009, in half by the end of his first term," the administration official told Reuters.
Earlier on Saturday, Obama said he had ordered the U.S. Treasury to implement tax cuts for 95 percent of Americans, fulfilling a campaign pledge he hopes will help jolt the economy out of recession.
The tax cuts are part of the economic recovery plan passed by the Democratic-controlled Congress over Republican opposition. The aim is to put more money in the pockets of Americans and stimulate the economy by increasing consumer spending.
"I'm pleased to announce that this morning the Treasury Department began directing employers to reduce the amount of taxes withheld from paychecks, meaning that by April 1st, a typical family will begin taking home at least $65 more every month," Obama said in his weekly radio address.
"Never before in our history has a tax cut taken effect faster or gone to so many hard-working Americans," he said.
With tens of thousands of Americans losing their jobs in the midst of a global economic meltdown, Obama has said fixing the U.S. economy is his top priority. He has acknowledged that his success or failure in that will define his presidency.
Obama can't do it but I think it's a good idea to hold him to it and urge him to make cutting the deficit in half the SOLE criteria he has to meet to run for re-election in 2012.
Obama will be another Jimmy Carter. He will destroy the economy, create crushing inflation and demoralize the entire population of the U.S. As did Jimmy Carter, Obama will leave open the door for Republican rule and another POTUS like Ronald Reagan. Prosperity is just 4 years away!

The only way he gets anywhere near this goal is to have the Republicans take control of Congress in the midterm elections in 2010. Dems LOVE to point out that Clinton was able to balance the budget. The tax on the rich disturbs me. President Obama should increase taxes on money not earned, such as dividends, stock options and golden parachutes. That would mean that society's working rich (such as doctors, head scientists, entertainers, and 2-earner professional families) would not be penalized for being educated, hard-working, and creative.

I believe his economy created 20+ million jobs - having lived through that time - I saw the interest rate drop from 20+% for a home loan down to single digits. The fed funds rate now is close to zero, so there is no gain to be made from monetary policy at this time, so he has limited options, hence my statement regarding raising taxes. - where does the money he just signed for (approximately $1.5 trillion) come from? He was voted the most liberal Senator in the Senate.........
AND, 2 years ago when Bipartisan ...... Democrat and Republican..... came to
the Senate floor to put regulations on Fanny and Freddy, Obama walked away
from it. WHY?

LACK OF REGULATIONS.......
We just learned his ability to spend with all the Pork that was in
this Stimulus Package....... didn't we....????
??? Presidents only sign the Bills that
reach their desk....... or veto......... George Bush should have vetoed more.
But, he didn't pass all the Spending........... Congress did.... OBAMA AND
HIS FELLOW LEGISLATORS...... Maybe we should look at who was
voting NO.......... McCain a Republican along with many others
were voting NO......... McCain voted "yes" 18% of the time, Obama
voted "yes" 80% of the time..... so lay off the Republicans......

AND YOU KNOW WHAT............ Obama PROMISED us that he would go to
Washington for CHANGE..... and his first opportunity to do that with this
MASSIVE SPENDING BILL............ He didn't take a leadership role and
write it..... he put is into the hands of Nancy and Harry..... he let them
write it......... THAT IS BUSINESS AS USUAL.....NOT CHANGE.
Obama embarrassed himself going all going all over saying there
was not any PORK in the Bill.
HE DID NOT KNOW WHAT WAS IN IT...... HE DIDN'T WRITE IT.
Could it get any worse..... besides the other PROMISE THAT WE
WOULD HAVE 5 DAYS TO REVIEW ALL BILLS BEFORE THEY
ARE SIGNED?????
The Bill was submitted at 11:30PM to the Senate for voting
the next day ...... INSANE.......
And, they are upset that the Republicans had concerns.
I am a Democrat that had concerns too.
Yes, it can get worse......... HE DIDN'T EVEN SPEND THE
WEEKEND BEFORE SIGNING THE BILL TO READ IT HIMSELF.
Nobody...... Nobody..... in Congress.... Democrat or Republican
read the Bill........ nobody except the authors (behind closed doors)
knew what was in it.......... 1,700 pages of almost $ Half a Billion
dollars a page and they voted on it and Obama signed it,
without knowing what is in it.
70% of the American People were not happy with this.......
We want to support Obama....... we want him to succeed.....
all we asked was slow down.... take an extra week.
Presidents Day Deadline........ Symbolic? it was BOGUS.

Deficit will be doubled with his "ideas", but It is possible to cut $ in half with inflation by 2013.
How in the world can any REPUBLICAN even remotely say anything about this financial deficit when it was your party that screwed it up in the first place!!!!!!!!! You guys should be asking forgiveness for putting America in this horrible position. You lost all credibility when it comes to the economy! Remember you had 8 years to keep things in check but didn't.
To me it is so funny to see REPUBLICANS start bashing Obama and he hasn't even gotten past 2 months of presidency. How can we judge anything this man does in office if we havent seen the outcome.
Another point I would like to make is that the business cycle is cyclical. This means what goes up, then goes down, goes up again, and down. This cycle repeats itself indefinitely. As to the magnitude of the cycle well that is a whole other story. We will see the upside again but when is that going to happen?
I see the only way out of this is to be a leader in science and technology again and lead the world in new blossoming industries.
The number #1 should be Alternative Energy!
Number two #2 should be medical sciences like stem cell research
