President Obama's administration issued a statement condemning the American filmmakers because it insulted Muslims. Islamic protesters stormed the U.S. embassy in Cairo, Egypt on the 11th anniversary of the Islamic Jihad terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The protesters also attacked the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. The protesters wanted America to ban the production of a film they believe criticizes the founder of Islam.
The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others.
President Obama may recognize the irony of his statement in contrast to the complete intolerance of any faith other than Islam in most Arab nations. In fact, the attackers tore down and burned the American flag at the Cairo embassy and replaced it with a flag that reads, "There is no God but Allah and Mohammad is his messenger."

Although Im sure they trying to calm down the protesters, the whole comment doesnt seem fitting to me. Are our embassies going to be constantly apologizing every time one religion or another gets their feelings hurt by an individuals right to free speech.

I dont know about that, lately that seems to be the only apologizing we are doing because that group seems to be the only ones inciting violence over free speech.

You'll note that the Embassy of the United Stated issued that statement, not Obama. You'll also note that the embassy made that statement knowing that it was getting bad reception due to that movie.

Why shouldn't the embassy try to console the hotheads surrounding it? Oh, I guess it should've just ignored the situation altogether? OK.

Just another way for the RWNJs to conflate issues. Will they ever cease to amaze me? Nope, I guess not.

Once again, the leaders of the American Communist Party raise their voices in support of stifling free speech instead of condemning the murderous acts of a mindless mob.

This administration needs to be impeached in its entirety, convicted, removed from office and prosecuted in the courts.

I really think Obama needs to wake up and realize just what country he is the president of. I understand that he is now condemning the the movie 2016. This is a production by Souza. The president of Kings College in London. The very same person who had to loan Obamas brother in Kenya $1000.00 for an operation he needed for either himself or one of his children; I cant remember which.

The movie trailer that I watched was so poorly made and cheesy that it was an insult to the camera man. Had this been a documentary that stated facts and was at least up to indie film standards then I would say that the protesters would just have to deal with the truth.

I still feel the reaction on the part of those in Egypt was way out of line. They made no attempt to settle this with any form of civility.

Considering the volatile nature of the fundamentalist radical Islamist a film that portrays their prophet Muhammad in such a manner is going to have a predictable reaction. The filmmakers and that idiot hatemonger preacher that helped promote it should have known that it was going to put American and other westerners lives at risk in that region.

Its inflammatory and insulting to Islam, not that I would ever consider that their protests and attacks were justified but rather its not surprising considering other incidents such as when they burned the Quran and Americans soldiers were killed during the resulting protests in Afghanistan.

Both the filmmakers and protesters who attacked the embassy deserve to be condemned from my perspective. And the condemnation of the idiots who made the film by this administration is probably intended to help prevent the Islamic protests from spreading throughout the Islamic world therefore meant to help save lives.

Sure but there is such a thing as an abuse of our first amendment rights such as shouting fire in a crowded theater.

They should have know that such a sleazy depiction of their prophet would send the Islamic fundamentalists into an uproar and that it could possibly jeopardize the safety of our troops and other westerners in the middle east.

Are you saying that everyone should be careful not to insult Muslims?

A few years ago an Arab miniseries of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion was produced and broadcast numerous times throughout the Arab world. I didn't see any riots or bloodshed over that. Why?
  • Q fuzzy K... 2012/09/12 18:02:17
    Q
I'm saying that there are repercussions to abuses of our first amendment rights and with the recent examples of such violence in the past decade they were acting irresponsibly by depicting their prophet in such a disrespectful manner.
  • fuzzy K... Q 2012/09/12 19:26:11
fuzzy Ken "In G-d We Trust"
Making a film critical of Mohammed or Islam is not an "abuse" any more than the films critical of or lampooning Jesus or Moses.
Muslims wish to shut us up. Note how they ask us to show "tolerance" yet they show none to others.
While unsavory and a proven lie The Protocols of the Elders of Zion was not "abuse" of free speech. How many riots and deaths were caused by Jews protesting that?
  • Q fuzzy K... 2012/09/12 19:39:39
    Q
None because in most of the western societies we don't allow the radical religious fundamentalist to run wild at the perceived slights on our religion.

We are governed by law and order on a much larger scale than most middle east countries that are overrun with radical Islamist who want to promote a Theocratic based form of govt. especially after the Arab Spring.

Its like comparing apples and oranges.

  • Q fuzzy K... 2012/09/12 20:39:35

    I think it's a cultural thing.
We have progressed to where we, as a society don't accept such things as lynchings, honor killings, killing apostates, stoning adulterers or beating rape victims.
Laws and governments cannot stop people eventually doing what they want to do. Look at how people disregarded the law when it came to interracial marriage, homosexuality and drinking alcohol. People still disregard the law when it comes to marijuana.

In an open society where every idea is tested, tasted, and discussed - we have created wonderful things - and learned the value of (thinking) free of government lock step policies. I think Obama is making the Politically correct move -- to ensure that he saves face for his own agenda and administration - it also demonstrates weakness - but he needs to understand that no matter what Americans do - we will be disputed, attacked, reviled - because we are big, and we are wealthy - and jealousy is a powerful tool. So, to quash our first amendment rights for political gain? Is stupid.
