The National Rifle Association has gained more than 100,000 new members in the past 18 days, the organization told POLITICO’s Playbook on Thursday.

The number of paid new members jumped from 4.1 million to 4.2 million during that time.

“Our goal is to get to 5 million before this debate is over,” the NRA told POLITICO’s Mike Allen.

Those comments come as Vice President Joe Biden gears up to meet with NRA representatives Thursday to discuss gun policy after the Dec. 14 mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., prompted a national conversation on the subject.

“We are willing to talk to policymakers about any reasonable proposals and plans,” an NRA official said in the Playbook report, regarding the upcoming meeting with Biden. “However, the NRA is hearing not just from Beltway elites and the chattering class, but real Americans all over the country that are hoping the NRA is not going to compromise on any of the principles of the Second Amendment, nor are we going to support banning guns. But we’re willing to listen.”

To join the NRA, one must pay $25. In return, new members may choose to receive a “Rosewood Handle Knife, Black & Gold Duffel Bag or Digital Camo Duffel Bag,” the Playbook report said.

Every person that values freedom, and respects the US Constitution should join.....
Far as I'm concerned there is nothing to discuss, the Constitution is pretty explicit, and rightfully so, to protect against exactly what Biden and Obama are trying to do.....

Why is the ban on machine guns not against the 2nd Amendment? Where is the line of acceptability?

Everyone is literally up in arms right now because of the changes that are being proposed by the white house and Feinstein, or however her name is spelled... I think people are showing support for the NRA because they want to be fairly represented and NRA has a pretty big voice when it comes to the 2nd amendment. If I had a bunch of money I'd be stockpiling guns right now. I plan on taking a gun safety class and getting a concealed carry permit. NRA backs all that.

Honestly, I dont like the fact that the NRA is gaining new members. They are run by idiots that think the 2nd Amendment is for hunting, at best. At worst they are controlled opposition.

Although whether they deserve it or not, they have become a symbol for gun rights, and the symbolic gesture of joining is a good sign that people care about their rights. And if the NRA is to live, hopefully they can be pressured and changed into an organization truly dedicated to the 2nd Amendment.

Good point. Getting co-opted by the left is exactly what happened to the AARP. . .which now consistently lobbies in OPPOSITION to the majority sentiment of their members. The AARP lobbied HEAVILY for the passage of obamanation-care, yet when polled over sixty percent of the membership didn't want it.
  • MARIDOTS Transqu... 2013/01/11 06:53:10
off topic, but AMAC is the conservative alternate to AARP. When I first joined AARP I wasn't too concerned about political views, but when they started pushing for 0bummer to be elected I opted out. I joined AMAC.

Even if a company offers a good service, I agree. Dissociate if you disagree with their politics. Some topics might be pointless to do so over, but if a company is promoting something like gun control, its best to walk away and find a different company to promote.
  • Jim Transqu... 2013/01/11 09:11:05
Exactly correct. When the AARP televised their support for the passage of Obamacare to include their members is when I picked up the phone and canceled my membership advising them, I do not support this fiasco and resent your ad implying that I do.

The NRA doesnt understand the constitution. As I explained, they told my father its about hunting.
