Newsweek Calls Obama the 'First Gay President': Did the Magazine Go Too Far?

It was kind of a big deal when Barack Obama became the first U.S. president to openly support gay marriage -- enough for the some to joke that he was "coming out of the closet," so to speak. But Newsweek took it a step further on the cover of this week's issue, dubbing Obama "the first gay president," along with an image of the president under a rainbow halo. It's a striking statement, no matter what side of the conversation you're on. But is it going a little too far?

Andrew Sullivan, an openly gay Newsweek journalist, wrote of Obama's announcement, "Like many others, I braced myself for disappointment. And yet when I watched the interview, the tears came flooding down. The moment reminded me of my own wedding day. I had figured it out in my head, but not my heart. And I was utterly unprepared for how psychologically transformative the moment would be. To have the president of the United States affirm my humanity — and the humanity of all gay Americans — was, unexpectedly, a watershed." Still, was Newsweek's cover a little too risque?

    LOL - uh, yeah.

    Edit -
I don't know about it being too "risque." But "The first gay president" leaves one with the impression that he himself is gay. Pretty sure that would come as a shock to his wife. lol

If he can't stand the heat, get out of the office. I know many think Newsweek is disrespect ful of the presidency ,but I've found if you want respect you have to earn it!

That was ridiculous and a classic example of linear though, where one thing always lead in a straight line to something else: If you smoke pot, you'll automatically smoke crack, etc. Because the man, as president supports gay rights, doesn't make him gay. No more than supporting a person's right to become a pilot makes you a pilot, Or a person's right to become a boxer, makes you a boxer. Or a person's right to have a child, means you must have one. Or a person's right to drive to their vacation destination, means that you have to drive to yours. Or a person's right to have an adult beverage at home means you're an alcoholic....

He's swishing from one stance-being opposed to it, & for marriage between one man & one woman, to get the votes in his 1st campaign for office,
and then, after getting into office, swishing to the opposite position, to get the votes from the opposite spectrum.

It should have been called "Obama, bait & switch, out of the closet"

I don't see how his support of gay marriage equates to him being lumped into being a part of that group. Although I wouldn't necessarily say they went "too far," I think it sends the wrong message. Some people are already uncomfortable with the idea of being seen as gay by association if they have homosexual friends or if they interact with or support same-sex-loving individuals. Magazine covers like this certainly don't help with that.

Historians believe that the first gay President was James Buchannan, our 15th President from 1857-1861. The evidence is circumstantial but compelling. President Buchannan was a bachelor and his sister served as First Lady. He was succeeded by President Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War started. Although President Obama likes to compare himself to President Lincoln, Lincoln never blamed his predecessor for anything. He never said: "The Civil War is all Buchannan's fault. From now on we can only elect heterosexual Presidents!" LOL !

Interestingly enough, it was getting along just fine until Christianity was made the state religion and homosexuals started being persecuted... However, this is merely academic because you clearly cannot induce a causal connection from merely one instance.

It's just really bad phrasing. Obama supports gay marriage. He is the first president to do that. He is not the first gay president. That implies he has been lying to his wife about his sexuality for.....I don't know how many years. And he isn't gay. I get what Newsweek was trying to do, but this was a little stupid.

saying President Obama is the "first gay president" is almost a slander because if not read carefully it seems like they mean he is also a homosexual which can cause problems for the magazine. my opinion on his supporting gay marriage is that he probably did it to please people or he was just expressing his personal opinions

I think the title is way out of line. First of all, the reference to him as gay as though it is a really bad thing. Secondly, it tells all of it's reader's that if they too were to support gay marriage in the US, that would mean that they must be gay also. Although I could care less if people think I'm gay or not, (which should be nobody's business) there are plenty of people that do care. If they have been supporting gay marriage, this may change their mind on speaking out. Third, there are a lot of people who will only see the cover and choose not to support Barack Obama in the presidential race, because of the statement.

I think it's wonderful that the president announced his support. However, I think that the cover of this magazine takes away from his support and starts unnecessary rumors. My question is: what on earth is wrong with the people who are against it?

Please... how sensitive have we become? Man... it isn't the first time a media outlet has played around with a topic and made a headline that says something else. If someone actually believes that Obama is gay because of Newsweek dubs him the first gay president AND if that person doesn't read the article or in some other way gather the information.. o well. As someone stated earlier, Clinton was dubbed the first black president (1998 - New Yorker, Morrison ) and there wasn't all that much, if any, uproar over the essay. Obama is the first president to openly support gay marriage.. period. That is a stance that some find liberating and others find abhorrent. Which is greater? November will tell... he did, as he has with other topics, reverse himself. But then again, he is a politician first and foremost; not black, not white, not hetero or homosexual. He sees some benefit in taking that stance.
But going too far??? Please.. media has gone WAY too far when it comes to Presidential coverage and it just gets worse. Since the '80s the media, in my opinion, has pealed away layers of respect that the title and office of the President held and I find it sad. You wouldn't have heard or read a news story back, in the '80s or earlier, without referencing the president as Mr. President or "...a big deal when President Obama..." rather than "... a big deal when Barack Obama...". Just me I suppose, but we wouldn't be having this discussion if it were 1960.
