New York City passed the first U.S. ban of oversized sugary drinks on Thursday in its latest controversial step to reduce obesity and its deadly complications in a nation that is fatter than ever.

By a vote of eight members in favor, with one abstaining, the mayoral-appointed city health board outlawed sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces nearly everywhere they are sold, except groceries and convenience stores. Violators of the ban, which does not include diet sodas, face a $200 fine.

Opponents, who cast the issue as an infringement on personal freedom and called Mayor Michael Bloomberg an overbearing nanny, vowed to continue their fight, possibly by going to court in the hopes of blocking or overturning the measure before it takes effect in March.

"It's sad that the board wants to limit our choices. We are smart enough to make our own decisions about what to eat and drink," Liz Berman, a business owner and chairwoman of New Yorkers for Beverage Choices, said in a statement

What's next to be outlawed? America, you can't have it your way any more. No more freedom to buy that big drink, you don't have the pursuit of the big soda of happiness and you are not at liberty to order a sugary delight larger than 16 ounces!

I think this board is getting too big for its britches and needs downsizing. It’s getting really bad when you have to be told that you cannot have a big sugary drink larger than 16 oz. What has happened to America, and her freedom, the people are not standing up for their rights anymore. It is looking like more and more, people want to be told what to do. No wonder people around the world think we are dumb, and weak .They are right, as we can’t say NO I don’t want that, and to get up and really make a stand.

This is what the liberals and democrats want and need..........someone to do for them what they are too stupid or too lazy to do for themselves. BTW - this will never stand and be overturned in the first court challenge because if it's not then the gubermint will have the right to expand it to what a citizen can and cannot eat, what they can watch on TV, or where and when the can go somewhere.

Not only is this ban NOT A VALID FUNCTION OF GOVERNMENT IT'S COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE!!! The reason it's counter-productive is the BODY WANTS A SOURCE OF ENERGY and 'DIET' anything doesn't provide that, so the BODY/MIND leaves on the EAT MORE URGE and results in MORE OBESITY!!!!!!

Also, it's INEFFECTIVE as it didn't CLOSE THE BORDERS to New Jersey, Connec ticut & any other New England States!
