New Form of MRSA Found in Cows' Milk: Are You Concerned About Milk Safety?

Milk. It does a body good, right?

A recent investigation has revealed traces of MRSA in milk supplies in the U.K., the first time any form of MRSA has been traced to dairy cattle in the U.K.

MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, is an antibiotics-resistant superbug that is difficult to treat and potentially fatal.

The discovery raises concern that intensive farming methods may be encouraging the emergence of new MRSA strains which are resistant to an ever-wider range of antibiotics.

In response to the finding, Organic farming lobby The Soil Association has called for a complete ban on antibiotics use in livestock, due to concerns that antibiotic treatment of farm animals may promote drug-resistant bacteria.

Experts insist there is no threat to the safety of milk sold in shops due to the pasteurization process, but the sale of unpasteurized milk in the U.K. is legal.

Are you worried about MRSA in your milk?

Growing up milking 30 Guernseys in a low-tech environment (organic for sure), hell yes I'm concerned about the prolific use of antibiotics and hormones in our food supply. The bacteria count in our milk was consistently very low due to good naturally hygenic practices (lots of sanitizer and hot water, very cold milk storage, attention to detail). That's the kind of milk I love and trust. Can't make much of a living with a 160 acre family farm anymore.

OMG - MRSA used to be only in hospitals. Now it's in what the kids drink? No more milk for my family. Calcium and Vit D can be had by veggies and supplements.

I'm lactose intolerant, I'm pretty sure I have nothing to worry about unless they say that soy milk, which I barely touch, has been contaminated.

They should go back to grazing the cows in grassey pastures because chemically induced milk,(they way they do it now) is too expensive and the cow don't produce any more milk than they do naturally.

Every tank load of milk leaving a farm is tested for inhibitors, bacteria, and somatic cells (mastitis)....high counts get your milk dumped.

Good farmers will cull staph cows quickly as it spreads easily, and is hard to eradicate. Pasteurization consistently removes pathogens anyhow...so not much to fear unless you are into unpasteurized milk/milk products.

Be aware that many interest groups...like PETA will blow the slightest incidents all out of proportion to promote their agenda.
They want to you eating tofu, and drinking soy milk.

I suppose and suggest that a super bug, has something to do with TERRORISM(biological attack),the GOVT cold be is using the people to TRY OUT their concoctions...biologically using the population as their test subjects for future use, or a foreign govt is up to dirty tricks..either way...my opinion is only conjecture, but the real possibility does stand to what I suppose...

I don't live in the UK. Heck, I prefer UNpasturized milk from certified cows (a nearby Mennonite farm produces some of the most wonderful Guernsey milk products--milk, cream, cheeses--yum!) Oh, and they sell their products on the honor system. There's a basket by the door, a posted price list and some refrigeration units. Pick up your products, put your money (cash only) in the basket and walk out the door. Have to love living in America's Third World County.

I'm always concerned about food safety. That is why I won't eat in restaurants. you never know what they are doing to your food before it gets to you. Not all of them are bad I know but having watched Gordon Ramsey and others on tv showing us how disgusting some are I'd rather be safe.

Because "epidemics" are always blown out of proportion.

I just don't care any more.

I'd like to add that potentially fatal means nothing. Stubbing your toe is potentially fatal.

I'm sure the MRSA was found in cows from corporate farms. Industrial (jug) milk. I don't know of serious problems with properly treated / organic farms. The Amish have been kicking butt for years. They don't have the same problems as industrial society.
