Nevada Allows Google's Self-Driving Car: Super or Scary?

Google's been working on patenting a self-driving car for a while, and now it's fully licensed to drive. In Nevada, at least. According the The Associate Press, the car received a license to drive after demonstrating its safe driving on the Las Vegas Strip. For whatever reason, the license requires that two passengers be in the car while it's on auto-pilot, doubling the risk. On the other hand, it's the perfect solution for those worried about Google's Glass project.

DMV director Bruce Breslow explained, "They're designed to avoid distracted driving. When you're on the Strip and there's a huge truck with three scantily clad women on the side, the car only sees a box." Any drawbacks? He adds, "It gets honked at more often because it’s being safe." It sounds like an amazing invention, and so far it hasn't gotten into any accidents, but does a self-driving car sound a little scary to you?

Kinda scary, actually. I love technology, but as anyone who deals with emerging techologies on a daily basis can tell you (and I do), there are always glitches and unforseen problems and scenarios. Always. For something like navigating a high speed vehicle down a road with changing traffic, weather, and road conditions, I'm not comfortable handing the wheel over to a computer yet. Anyone who has experience with GPS navigators knows that they are frequently wrong about routes and other trip data.

I put super, but I'd say right now, it's actually a little of both. In the long run, if we keep going down that road, I think traffic safety will go up big time, (but I'll sure miss driving). I still don't even like those new fangled automatic transmissions. ;-), but the unrelenting beat of time marches on.

the idea that stupid people are against it. It's not like those against it think its some kind of witch. Its a piece of technology that runs itself, technology has the nasty habit of failing either from malfunctions or errors. You don't want to suffer any of these things when around people driving "analog" vehicles.

So do humans. And we've been doing it a lot longer than technology.

    >You don't want to suffer any of these things when around people driving "analog" vehicles.
There isn't a day I don't hear about catastrophic accidents (caused by humans). What's your point?

You can't really compare humans to technology. Humans dont fail, they make mistakes. Honestly, this discussion is stupid when you're comparing humans to machines. I'd understand the reason for it if we were cyborgs and androids, but no. It's not even the same.

Trains and planes can run themselves since they are for the most part unobstructed. A car driving itself on a highway. No.

Have they also managed to eliminate ALL possibility of a catastrophic malfunction? If not, who will be held liable when there is a glitch, and someone is injured or killed? At least with a human being behind the wheel, there is someone to be held to account when something goes wrong!

I ck'd who paid for this technology and it was the police (for more ticketst) and the Ins companies (so they can raise their rates) and funniest vidoes.

But if worse comes to worse you can google the nearest hospital. That is if you have any fingers that work.

Here are some proud google users, at least for a little while.

It's bad enough when you have to reboot your computer, DVR, phone, etc... Can you imagine your car's computer "freezing" up on you while you're travelling at 65MPH on a busy highway?

THIRD CHOICE! We need something that isn't one or the other!

Sounds great to me. I'd love to have a car that drives itself. I'm a mess behind the wheel and thus never drive. I know the functions, but have zero skill and no ability to learn. With something like this, we're another step closer to giving people like me the same freedom to move about as everyone else.

The most dangerous thing on any road is other humans driving cars. There's no consistent flow. EVERYBODY texts and drives now. People will still drink and drive. People like my mom are on the road (run for your life!). It's gonna save a lot of lives when we finally have an automated transportation system permanently in place.

Not safely, apparently. I live in a place where if we get dusted with light flurries in the winter all hell breaks loose on the roads. One guy is going 50mph, another 22mph. You see wrecks on the side of the road every 200 yards. You would think volcanoes were erupting and the sky was falling because nature through minimal challenges at us. To tell you the truth, when it comes to travel, I'm all for taking every bit of control away from humans.

Right. Up until the car says "ERROR. ERROR!" Then starts glitching and speeds up until you ram into the nearest item that will stop a car... Even the MOST ADVANCED technology is not guaranteed to be perfect. There is ALWAYS a chance for something to go wrong. One may want to think of these things before hoping in a vehicle that ends up having a power surge and sends you flying off of route 66 at 125 mph. :)

That's why manual breaks are still in place. You can take back over whenever you want. And even if your very unlikely hypothetical scenario happened 20,000 times a year. That's still 20,000 lives saved. Like I said. Our commercial airplanes already fly themselves and have a 99.9999999999% success rate. Its pretty simple math dude. Automated transportation is inevitable. Live in fear all you want. It's gonna happen.

Ever flown commercially? I guess you're unaware that the pilots only jobs are taking off and landing. Once altitude and coordinates are punched in, the plane flies itself until approach.
