NASA just released its presidential budget request for 2013 and, as expected, the space agency’s planetary science program takes a big hit. The budget document (summary pdf) is merely the first volley in an often drawn-out exchange between the White House and Congress, but still sets the general direction for the space program. Although the Obama administration’s proposal would slice less than 1 percent from NASA’s current budget, it proposes some major shifts of funds within the agency.

The planetary science program, which received $1.5 billion for 2012, would take a 20 percent cut. NASA would still fly the Mars MAVEN atmospheric mission in 2013 but would back away from two joint missions with the European Space Agency:

NASA is terminating further activity on the formulation activity for the NASA/ ESA ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter 2016 (EMTGO) mission and planning for the previous NASA/ESA Mars 2018 mission concept.

Funny how he is "all for the landing" when he is the one who personally decimated NASA.

He is all for defunding the DoD untill it happens right before an election then not only is he not for the cuts he is ALSO not for telling them they may BE cut.

If it is GOOD for our country then he will do his level best to put a stop to it.

Another hopey changy thing for Obama. For the first time since 1962 we are unable to put a man in orbit.

Moon exploration, that he cancelled, can create new fuel industry for fusion.
Obama doesn't want to see US as the first country that can use Deuterium-Helium-3 fuel cycle? )
Talking about the enemy within. ))

Moon mining can bring trillions to the smart country/company.
There is over $300 trillion in elements, that are very rare on Earth. (He-3, Dy, La, Y, etc.)

P.S. China scheduled robotic miner on the Moon by 2025, Russia scheduled mining outpost by 2035, while Americans hitchhiking Russian rockets & have no plans to tap into Moon elements.

And if he had supported those programs, conservatives would have excoriated him for wasting money.

He can't win with you people.

"Obama never met a big government social program he didn't like"

He cut off the shuttle program. He's cutting funding for NASA. So clearly you're wrong.

Right - let's take away from NASA so we can fund Obamacare - the idea, at least in my opinion, is not to take away one dollar just to spend two more

I hate to agree with ANYTHING Obama does, but in this case, NASA appears to be an obstructionist element in getting humanity into space. It's time to light the second stage and let Industry start to push us out of our cradle.

He has that Muslim and/or progressive mind set.

This means to go backwards trying to take care of freeloaders rather than working towards higher technology and betterment for everyone.

Hey NASA! You know you didn't land that rover on Mars, right? It wasn't your blood, sweat and tears that put it there.
