Muslim staff escape NHS hygiene rule Muslim doctors and nurses are to be allowed to opt out of strict hygiene rules introduced by the NHS to restrict the spread of hospital superbugs.

Female staff who follow the Islamic faith will be allowed to cover their arms to preserve their modesty despite earlier guidance that all staff should be "bare below the elbow".

The Department of Health has also relaxed rules prohibiting jewellery so that Sikh members of staff can wear bangles linked with their faith, providing they are pushed up the arm while the medic treats a patient.

The Mail on Sunday reported the change had been made after female Muslims objected to being required to expose their arm below the elbow under guidance introduced by Alan Johnson when he was health secretary in 2007.

The rules were drawn up to reduce the number of patients who were falling ill, and even dying, from superbugs such as MRSA and Clostridium difficile.

Revised guidance which relaxed the requirements for some religions was published last month.

Some Muslim staff and those from other groups may be allowed to use disposable plastic over-sleeves which cover their clothes below the elbow and allow the skin to remain covered up.

Derek Butler, chairman of MRSA Action UK, said: "My worry is that allowing some medics to use disposable sleeves you compromise patient safety because unless you change the sleeves between each patient, you spread bacteria.

"Scrubbing bare arms is far more effective."

A Department of Health spokesman said: "The guidance is intended to provide direction to services in how they can balance infection control measures with cultural beliefs without compromising patient safety."

Maybe they should just go and work in their native country.By native country I mean that country the ancestors came from ,not the one they were born in.If they are so devout to their cult then let them spread their diseases in the hospitals fo those countries instead of ours.

If they won't follow rules of hygiene, don't hire them. They should sign a contract saying they can and will follow the usual standards.

I have been in hospital and have seen nurses and doctors who are asian washing their hands and arms. Also they say in the hospital if you think someone has not washed their hands before they treat you, you can ask them to.

What a load of codswallop! If a person wants to work in a particular field he or she must accept the rules about clothing in order to be safe and healthy at work, be it on a building site or in a hospital. Staff in hospitals should be bare armed below the elbow if it is deemed to be more hygienic and there ought to be no exceptions. I for one would refuse to be treated by a medic who had sleeves down and bangles on because of the risk of infection to me on top of whatever else I was in hospital for.

They would be able to pull half the crap in their ethnic or religious country of origin. They don't respect human rights, minority rights and aren't tolerant. They wont be able to milk the system like they do here.

country origin respect human rights minority rights tolerant milk

There is was a Rabbi called Meir Kahane in Israel who once described the Arab (muslim) as a cancer.
"The Arab (muslims) is like a cancer in our midst and we either cut it out and throw out or die."
    Its crude but true.

So you want to go to hospital that has a better chance of MRSA, or some other super bug, just to be politically correct. While disposable sleeves may be the answer if, a big if, used properly, why would you, or anyone for that matter, take the chance just for the sake of said correctness? I realize that everyone is going to die, but why push your luck?
