MSNBC commentator Joy Reid said: “Right now, first of all, there is a huge boom in it there is a big career advancement in it. If you want to be Ben Carson, Marco Rubio, any brown or black person who is willing to say conservative stuff, this is your moment. You can make a lot of money, get a lot of attention, get a lot of love from the right, because they really do need brown and black faces to start saying this script.

“But the problem is in order to fit in as a minority conservative, you really almost have to be even further to the right than typical conservatives. You have to mouth verbatim all of the party’s beliefs, because if you stray one bit, you are held in suspicion. So Rubio is caught in that matrix.”

We should be able to discuss race issues without being accused of racism. This shouldn't be a taboo subject. People need to stop demanding people's jobs because they mention something about race. Too many people have been fired for this nonsense already.

WTH is so racist about that statement? Have you teabaggers on the right actually listened to the trash Herman Cain spoke? How about Cruz or Rubio? In order for those guys to be "accepted" they've had to say more outlandish crap than their white counterparts!

I heard her entire segment and I can't imagine how anyone with a teaspoon of brains could think she was being racist. She was accusing the Republican party of exploiting it's racial/cultural minority members, (what few there are) and keeping them on a extremely tight leash at the same time they want to try to push them to the front in order to give the appearance of being less racist while actually still being ferociously racist. Joy is one very smart commentator but I don't think she's got a magic wand and that's what it would take to make the point that the Republicans are still fundamentally racist, using a rash of examples and facts as she did while managing to give a racist message at the same time. Listen to her entire commentary at that time - you can find it easy enough and make up your own minds. The claim that she was being racist is DOA.

Don't see any racism in her statements at all; merely a statement of fact. The GOP must be desparate to recruit suitable black and brown members and candidates, as they are evidently so unappealing to ethnic minority voters.
BTW, how desparate must they be to promote Ben Carson in the way they do? He doesn't believe in evolution, and thinks fiscal policy should be based on a book of fairy tales. I have plenty of respect for what he does in his job, but he should really stick to that and keep his nose out of matters political.

She speaks the truth. Rubio has big party problems right now. In full blown panic because they repelled Hispanic voters in the last election, Republicans are in great need of attracting Hispanic voters.... enter Rubio. Marco doesn't want to be viewed as a sell out to his Hispanic family/friends, a panderer. He also wants to tow the party line of the GOP base. And he is a Tea Party darling and cannot afford to chap them . Actually he could and should.

The only thing he can do is come up with an immigration bill that is attractive to the electorate, the base, and the Tea Party. What are the chances ?

As for Dr. Carson, an eloquent speaker, it's unclear why he is appearing everywhere. Does he really have political aspirations or is he pushing his book?

She never said or implied anything like that at all, although a very good case could be made for it. The party is so blatantly racist and sexist sociologists study Black, Hispanic, Gay, and Female Republicans with great fascination. Still, the point Joy was making was NOT about those people being Republicans, it was about how Republicans have been treating those who are part of that party. You've got the thing on inside out.

There is nothing that she says here that I personally disagree with. Its really quite true.

While the republicans are getting their arms around the fact that the country's demographics are indeed changing and if they don't get a handle on why they are losing and going to continue to lose important elections, the Right still doubles down on all the reasons why they lost and will continue to lose. Setting out the likes of Rubio and Carson simply isn't going to cut it. While they represent those changing demographics, they still adhere to the same policies and republican mission that is getting them beaten regardless.

Really, maybe you can explain why the house republicans were not beaten...Just to prove you don't have a clue of what you are talking about I will ask you one simple question, and that is, 0bama is out there saying he cut $2.5 trillion in spending, however what they are not telling you is what he has added to the deficit which over the past four years is $5.9 TRILLION. I ask you, how did 0bama cut spending if he is adding to the deficit?

It is entirely possible to cut spending while adding money to the deficit! Republicans do it every time they are in office! It's all in how you define "spending". President George Bush sold President Barack Obama on bailing out the banks and the economy with an enormous infusion. Bush was right - it was the only thing that could have kept us from disaster. Obama's mistake was that he didn't put enough into it. Then there is the cause of the deficit in the first place - the wars! Are these things counted under "spending"? No, they are not. They're not the kinds of things we budget for and only things in the budget get counted as "spending". This is how Republicans and Democrats alike can raise spending on war by trillions and not include a dollar of it when they talk about cutting spending! House Republicans were not beaten because of "redistricting" - gerymandering, and because Democrats don't show up to vote. That's why Republicans like Karl Rove were having a fit on election night - they had no reason to think they would lose based on the past. They didn't expect democrats would finally show up to vote. They never had in the past. Truth is only 27% of the public is registered Republican. If Democrats showed up to vote Republicans couldn't elect a dog catcher. And yet they won the House. If Democrats have indeed started to vote and have woken up it will change everything. If not then it will go back to the way it was.

Claiming to cut spending, instead of actually cutting it, is why the Tea Party formed. Both parties are guilty of what you describe. So why is 0bama claiming he cut spending, when in fact he has added to spending, and the war is only a fraction to what he has spent. Point is, where are the cuts when the debt has increased? Or, are you just another lib that is fooled into government meanings? LOL...Also it doesn't matter to me what the % of voters we have, because we are going to get what we deserve, and that goes for you too, comrade.
  • Todd~AFCL middles... 2013/02/24 03:40:23
    Todd~AFCL
Really, by definition, it is not possible to cut spending while adding to the deficit. The parties are making claims of cutting spending when only cutting the growth of spending from what they originally wanted. Bush didn't sell 0bama on bailing out the banks; 0bama was already wanting to spend as much tax-payer money as possible, in order to force us to accept socialism and bring our economy to a standstill. Bush was wrong and so are you! We would have been much better off letting the crisis, caused by Democrats in the first place, to simply run its course. Those banks that survived would have been stronger and more able to help the economy, instead of becoming pawns for an increasingly intrusive government.
The biggest cause of the debt is not the wars, or we would only have a debt of about $4 to $5 Trillion instead of in excess of $16 Trillion. The biggest drain on our national treasury is a combination of Medicaid, Medicare, and CHIP, costing more than ALL defense spending put together.
If the Democrats would actually wake up, they would switch parties. Maybe that is why Independents are the largest voting block. It wouldn't matter if EVERY registered Democrat voted, if the Independents don't vote with them.
