Dr. Ronald Davis, senior scientific editor of a report about adolescent psychology and smoking in movies & advertising, and past president of the American Medical Association, announced in Chicago that the report has two definitive conclusions: that tobacco advertising and promotion are "causally related" to increased tobacco use, and that depictions of smoking in movies is "causally related" to youth smoking initiation. This is the first Governmental report to state these definitive conclusions.

The report says that a lot of tobacco advertising targets the psychological needs of adolescents, such as popularity, peer acceptance and positive self-image. Advertising creates the perception that smoking will satisfy these needs. And also that even brief exposure to tobacco advertising influences adolescents' attitudes and perceptions about smoking and smokers, and adolescents' intentions to smoke.

As a former adolescent and former smoker (day 10 baby!) I can say that of course it does! There was something cool about being bad. You've got the American Lung Association and the Government campaigns against smoking because it damages your health. On the other side of it, you have the carefree Brad Pitt smoking in Ocean's 11. So to smoke now, is kind of to say, "F-U mainstream society." It's a way for adolescents to establish their identity in the world also. Smoking is such a fringe activity now and so frowned upon that it makes it cool. It's kind of a little badass thing you can do.

For many of the young people these days choices are harder than ever. You see people smoking and having sex just about everywhere you look. For some kids they just dont know any better. And the movies and advertising don't help at all.

Adolescent brains haven't stopped forming yet -- their judgment is impaired because of this. So of course they are so swayed. just as they are swayed by "what everybody's doing".

At the same time I think this study (or similar) have been around for decades. I grew up with cigarette advertising in the football, watching some guys puff on one during half time, it never made me consider taking it up. I grew up in a family of smokers, I seen my friends smoking, we went out, they smoked, it seemed like a natural progression to me at the time. Apart from the curse of nicotine, being naieve was my biggest influence. "I can quit whenever I want, I'm not addicted"

HECK NO! Movies and advertising affect more than just adolescents smoking. What about the extreme messages sent to young ladies that they all have to be stick thin in order to be beautiful, sexy and wanted. It's no wonder there are so many with eating disorders with all that the media throws up in front of them. I remember wanting to be a model once and then heard someone from the Ford Modeling Agency speak and found out that at 6ft. and 140 lbs that I was both too tall and too heavy! (when everyone around me was telling me I was too thin!) Go Figure!

This is how the tobacco companies advertise their product. It's a form of product placement, and I am not surprised that this has the same influence on psychology that most advertising is supposed to have.

Incidentally, I remember reading somewhere that the MPAA was going to take onscreen smoking into account when they rate movies. Alcohol and drug use affects the rating that a movie gets, and I think it's now the same way with smoking. Too much smoking results in an R-rating, which is just fine by me.

But it's not he only influence on adolescent behavior. Parents can be the strongest influence, if you want to be. Don't blame movies and advertising if your kids start smoking. You need to be letting them know what you think about the advertisements and movies when you see them. You also need to find out what your kids think, (you know, communicate). You might be surprised. And you might surprise them with your willingness to learn about them.

I will definitely agree with you on this one and the communication needs to start at a very early age before they are really even subjected to it. The same goes for drinking and driving. I started having talks like this with my two boys before they even started school!

That's exactly what a good parent does. You gotta get to your kids before the world does. And believe me, it starts earlier than you might want it to!

Sex, drugs, and violence are what sell most movies nowadays, it really doesn't surprise me that now there are a lot more fights in school, more teen pregnancy, and more kids overdosing than before.
