Movies & Advertising Influence Adolescent Psychology: Are You Surprised?

Dr. Ronald Davis, senior scientific editor of a report about adolescent psychology and smoking in movies & advertising, and past president of the American Medical Association, announced in Chicago that the report has two definitive conclusions: that tobacco advertising and promotion are "causally related" to increased tobacco use, and that depictions of smoking in movies is "causally related" to youth smoking initiation. This is the first Governmental report to state these definitive conclusions.
The report says that a lot of tobacco advertising targets the psychological needs of adolescents, such as popularity, peer acceptance and positive self-image. Advertising creates the perception that smoking will satisfy these needs. And also that even brief exposure to tobacco advertising influences adolescents' attitudes and perceptions about smoking and smokers, and adolescents' intentions to smoke.

I'm not surprised that movies & advertising affect adolescent psychology.+6As a former adolescent and former smoker (day 10 baby!) I can say that of course it does! There was something cool about being bad. You've got the American Lung Association and the Government campaigns against smoking because it damages your health. On the other side of it, you have the carefree Brad Pitt smoking in Ocean's 11. So to smoke now, is kind of to say, "F-U mainstream society." It's a way for adolescents to establish their identity in the world also. Smoking is such a fringe activity now and so frowned upon that it makes it cool. It's kind of a little badass thing you can do.

a thought until now......
Incidentally, I remember reading somewhere that the MPAA was going to take onscreen smoking into account when they rate movies. Alcohol and drug use affects the rating that a movie gets, and I think it's now the same way with smoking. Too much smoking results in an R-rating, which is just fine by me.
Marky :o)
