Mothers Hiring Professional Birth Photographers: Reasonable or Ridiculous?

Forget the days of dad or other family members snapping photos in the delivery room. Now, a growing number of women are turning to professional photographers to document the miracle of childbirth.

In recent years, the birth photography industry has really taken off. They even have their own professional organization, the International Association of Professional Birth Photographers, which has roughly 400 members.

According to The New York Times, professional birth photographers charge anywhere from $700 to $1,900. That’s pretty pricey. But then again, these photographers do have to be available to come rushing to the hospital at a moment’s notice.

So, you may be wondering: How graphic do these birth photos actually get? Apparently, that’s a pretty common question.

Briana Kalajian, a co-owner of Shoots and Giggles Photography, told The New York Times, “People will ask if I’m going to take the National Geographic birth photo. They ask it in 10 different ways.”

The answer: During delivery, most photographers choose to stand near the mother’s head unless a crowning shot is specifically requested.

Dr. Randi Hutter Epstein, author of “Get Me Out: A History of Childbirth from the Garden of Eden to the Sperm Bank,” blames celebrity culture for the desire to turn childbirth into a photo shoot.

“There is a lot of pressure to not just cherish the birth experience but to promote it as this beautiful thing,” she said. “Then you’re going to get into your skinny jeans the next day and have a beautiful photograph of you looking absolutely beautiful and well rested with your perfect-looking baby, like all the celebrities.”

Now before you run off to find a professional birth photographer of your own, please keep in mind that many hospitals ban cameras from the delivery room.

So Sodaheads, what do you think about mothers hiring professional birth photographers? Reasonable or ridiculous?

So there are no late term abortions then? So we don't have prominent liberal democrats in Congress and in the media supporting late term abortion? So your messiah, King Obama wasn't the only member of the Illinois legislature to not support a bill to provide medical care for newborns who survived failed late-term abortions and let viable living human babies outside of the whom die? Hmmm, either you are completely ignorant of the real world, or you live in some alternate universe. And I'm guessing you've had an abortion, haven't you?

Again. This article is about parents hiring someone to take pictures at their baby's birth. It has nothing to do with abortion of any kind. It has nothing to do with Obama or whether or not I have ever had an abortion which, frankly, is none of your damned business.

Are you really that hard up for things to do today that you decided to pick up an argument almost 8 months later? Really?!

I'd rather not have a photo of my child just being born...I'd rather keep that as a memory between me, my partner and whoever is in the room.

Having a child is a milestone in ones life as is a wedding. If a professional photographer is appropriate for one, why not the other.

It's reasonable, because that's an experience you'll always want to remember, and if you want a picture to remind you of the times, then go for it. I could see where it could be ridiculous, but it's a beautiful thing, and a mother should be able to do as they please.

When I had my daughter, I went into labor so quickly that the doctor had to throw the chair together. Since, it was such a fast birth, the photos that my husband took didn't turn out very well. He said he was so nervous and that it happened so quickly. There are one or two pretty good pictures but to have a non-objective person taking photos (of the baby not of the entire process or anything) could be a pretty good idea. You only have one chance after that, it's too late.

I don’t' see the issue. If you know you probably wont be able to rely on a family member or you're alone and really want it to have this experience documented what else are you suppose to do? Plus.. it's a nice change to those normal photos. If I had the stomach I'd do the photography

As long as it is someone they asked to take the photos it's all good. If it's a random person coming in, and taking pictures, and publishing them without the parents real consent it's ridiculous.

Just that I would be surprised that you would make the comment if you had a child. The fact that you haven't and feel that way isn't surprising. I somewhat felt the same way before I had a child. Afterward, I felt completely differently. You can't understand it until you have.

No mater what you feel about it, childbirth is in no way, shape or form a miracle....no more miracle than a cow, sheep, horse, elephant, lion giving birth anyway. These things are all part of nature, they don't fit into the deification of miracle.

Oh but I forget no one cares about dietitians any more. if it was a happy event it's automatically a miracle.

That seems just kind of creepy to me. I took pics when my daughter was born. It's a life changing experience/event so I understand the desire to record it. But it is also a deeply personal experience. The idea of an unnecessary stranger in the room just doesn't sit well with me at all.
