Mothers Hiring Professional Birth Photographers: Reasonable or Ridiculous?

Forget the days of dad or other family members snapping photos in the delivery room. Now, a growing number of women are turning to professional photographers to document the miracle of childbirth.

In recent years, the birth photography industry has really taken off. They even have their own professional organization, the International Association of Professional Birth Photographers, which has roughly 400 members.

According to The New York Times, professional birth photographers charge anywhere from $700 to $1,900. That’s pretty pricey. But then again, these photographers do have to be available to come rushing to the hospital at a moment’s notice.

So, you may be wondering: How graphic do these birth photos actually get? Apparently, that’s a pretty common question.

Briana Kalajian, a co-owner of Shoots and Giggles Photography, told The New York Times, “People will ask if I’m going to take the National Geographic birth photo. They ask it in 10 different ways.”

The answer: During delivery, most photographers choose to stand near the mother’s head unless a crowning shot is specifically requested.

Dr. Randi Hutter Epstein, author of “Get Me Out: A History of Childbirth from the Garden of Eden to the Sperm Bank,” blames celebrity culture for the desire to turn childbirth into a photo shoot.

“There is a lot of pressure to not just cherish the birth experience but to promote it as this beautiful thing,” she said. “Then you’re going to get into your skinny jeans the next day and have a beautiful photograph of you looking absolutely beautiful and well rested with your perfect-looking baby, like all the celebrities.”

Now before you run off to find a professional birth photographer of your own, please keep in mind that many hospitals ban cameras from the delivery room.

So Sodaheads, what do you think about mothers hiring professional birth photographers? Reasonable or ridiculous?

If that's what the parents both want and are willing to pay the money for. I wouldn't have minded having a professional birth photographer when I gave birth.

I know you always want to remember that special moment, but when your child is being born, you're under a lot of stress. Also this is more of a time for the family, without a photographer hiding in the corner! If you want pictures, ask the husband or another family member there.

I looked into this, and they have a specially-priced package if you hire the Photog for both the birth and the act of conception. That's an album you'll want to hide from the kiddies.

It's reasonable if that's what you want. For me personally we didn't take pictures it was a beautiful and private moment for my husband and I and we will never forget every moment of it.

If your delivery is perfectly "normal" then you may get the pictures you want. If some complications arise, the photographer will be removed from the room (either asked or pushed) so no negigence could be caught on tape.
Sadly I've seen it happen and I don't think you'll get the refund for services not rendered, especially if the staff removes the cameras.

I personally find the birthing process gross on all accords: mom is sweaty and gross, baby is covered in nasty and gross, dad is freaking out. Take a picture after; there is no need to document the screaming and the heaving.

Someone is suppose to be photographing you while you lay there screaming in pain, with 8 pounds coming out of your vagina? I think it is sick. "So that is what color your pubic hairs are?" Might as well star in a porno film.

As a professional photographer, I would not take the pictures or have them taken. That is a very private moment for immediate family only. I could barely have my husband in the room.

Not only reasonable but natural if you want a decent and easthetically valid record of this major event, were it only for your child later. The picture illustrating this article is a good example of it. One has to remember, it is not the camera who makes great pictures, it is the person pressing the button. It also frees the father to assist the mother. So, again, a defenite MUST if you want it recorded.

These shots can go on YouTube, along with the video of the couple's 'perfect' engagement moment (choreographed, of course, with their 200 closest friends dancing and cartwheeling as he presents the ring).

National Geographic birth photo?? This isn't about memories, it's about showing off and having the great 'conversation piece'.

This question of photographers at a mother's birth reminds me of a skit on SNL with Robin Williams hosting. He's a ;proud father who wants to photograph his baby as soon as its born. His very weary, exhausted wife about to give birth holds the heavy video camera. He says ....at your cervix. (at your service). This question bought back memories of tat very funny skit.

I'm sorry, but the last thing on my mind when I go into labor is going to be "OMG! Call the photographer!"
But then again, I'm not one of those "birthzilla" kind of moms that has a long list of demands for my birth.

Why not if done tastefully. I think the black and white photo on this post is a beautiful shot. No one said they are going to be taking shots of mom's cooch. It's just that many on here are to immature to see past that.

Hey liberals, see that image of a beautiful new baby. A new life coming in to the world. That's what you are murdering by the millions every year. There's your "bundle of cells".

    politicalsoldier
Because that's what every issue comes down to. But it's not really politics, it's ideology and world view that shapes people beliefs, decisions and their politics.

My point here would be that conservatives, and yes mostly Christians and Jews (and some think thy are liberal democrats), that find human life sacred and created by God, would find these images of the moment the miracle of a new human life is born to the world, beautiful.

Atheist, progressive, humanist see life as a biological mistake, and a baby is no more than a bundle of cells that society should decide weather they live or die based on their contribution to the collective and their financial burden to the state. These people would only see something gross in these pictures.

Yes it all does come down to that.

No, it doesn't. Check out the answers here. There are many conservatives who think the pictures are "gross". And there are many liberals who don't think it's "gross". Also, I guarantee you, there is no liberal who thinks that a full term or new born baby is a clump of cells. Early in the first trimester, it is a clump of cells, and that is when the majority of abortions take place.

However, this thread is about pictures of the birth process. Those mothers have decided to carry their pregnancies to term, so abortion discussion is ultimately moot and also inappropriate here, and it's really best to save it for another thread.
