WASHINGTON (Reuters) - About two-thirds of Americans believe Republican former U.S. President George W. Bush is responsible for the nation's struggling economy, with a smaller percentage blaming Democratic President Barack Obama, a Gallup poll showed on Thursday.

About 68 percent of the more than 1,000 adults surveyed nationwide said Bush,
who left office in January 2009, deserves a "moderate amount" or a
"great deal" of the blame for the U.S. economic woes compared to 52
percent who pointed to his successor Obama, the poll found.

The results were released as Obama prepared to give a
major economic speech later on Thursday as part of his campaign to win
re-election on November 6. He is seeking to convince voters that his
economic remedies are working and that his Republican rival Mitt
Romney's policies would trigger an economic crisis.

Poll respondents who identified themselves as
Republicans were split, with 49 percent saying Bush deserved a moderate
amount or great deal of the blame while 51 percent said Bush deserved
not much of the blame or none at all. They expressed even more blame for
Obama, however, with 83 percent holding him largely responsible for the
state of the economy, the poll found.

Among Democrats, 90 percent blamed Bush for the weak economy and only 19 percent said Obama should carry much of the blame, according to the poll, conducted by telephone June 7 to 10.

"Republicans, in short, are significantly more willing
to blame their most recent Republican president than are Democrats
willing to blame Obama," Gallup said.

Independent voters, who could play a critical role in
the November election, were more likely to blame Bush (67 percent) than
Obama (51 percent). Fewer independents blamed Obama than Gallup's last
results in September, when 60 percent pointed to him, the poll found.

Many Americans are still struggling to recover
financially from the nation's deepest recession since the Great
Depression of the 1930s, and Obama is trying to regroup after recent
setbacks, including an anemic May jobs report.

"Americans continue to place more blame for the nation's economic problems on George W. Bush
than on Barack Obama, even though Bush left office more than three
years ago," Gallup said. "... This suggests that Obama's argument that
he is on the right track and needs more time to turn the economy around
could fall on receptive ears, particularly those of independents."

Bush, who served two four-year terms as president, has
been unable to shake the blame since Gallup began tracking the economic
finger-pointing in 2009, and has seen about 70 percent of those polled
holding him responsible since mid-2010.

Critics say Bush's tax cuts combined with increased
spending to fight two wars, among other costs, helped plunge the nation
into a deep economic crisis.

The month obama took the oath of office 750,000 jobs were lost. To this day, Republicans take absolutely no blame for anything that happened. Nada. To hear them tell it, they are as innocent as a newborn babe. On their watch, the unfunded wars, unfunded Medicare Part D and the infamous donut hole, and NCLB, and the debt ceiling was raised 7 times.

Yet all of that is Obama's fault.

It tooks years to get us into this mess and it will take years to get out. What is the Republican plan? According to mouthbreather , racist Jeff Sessions, it is " to continue the Bush policies".

And the democrats in congress burst it with the minimum wage hikes.
I don't doubt that they did so on purpose just to gain a few more seats in congress.

Minimum wage hikes did not cause this crisis LOL It's much bigger than that!

Minimum wage hikes did cause a dramatic increase in unemployment.
With less people paying for their sub-prime mortgages, which they got due to the community reinvestment act (thank you carter and clinton) the housing bubble burst.

Oh how you show your ignorance LMAO Wouldn't you think the trillion plus we paid on the bogus wars Bush got us into had a bigger effect on the economy? Then we can throw in the tax cut Bush put through during war time!!! Something that has not been done before. Then we can go on to his unfunded prescription drug program, etc... I'm not wasting anymore time with you. Any comment you make is completely unsubstantiated and quite frankly I'm bored arguing these brain farts you keep having. You don't know what you are talking about!!!!! You're just on here to hate!!!!! Go find your happy place LOL

The cost of both wars over the course of 11 years is less than obama has overspent every year since he took office.
The chart doesn't lie. The Bush tax cuts created jobs and the democrats minimum wage hikes created unemployment.

Only a fool wouldn't see that.

Bush passed deregulation of derivatives in 2001, thanks to people like Henry Paulson, Larry Summers and Greenspan. That's what caused the housing bubble!

The deregulation happened under Bush's watch!! That was the biggest turning point of what led to the current housing crisis. Obviously you are Republican...I've noticed first you say it's Clinton's fault, then state it goes back to Carter....guess you forget there was 20 years of Republican Presidency there vs (to date) 15 for Democrats. Perspective is a healthy thing, you should try it sometime LOL

OK BUT WHY DON'T YOU ADDRESS HOW OBAMA HAS JUST AMPLIFIED THE PROBLEMS BY CONTINUING THE SAME REPUBLICAN BS YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT?!

    Redneck Gal
YOU CAN STOP SHOUTING!!!!! President Obama is addressing the problems Bush created. The economic ditch Bush ran us into is a deep one. In 2008 this country was facing a complete economic collapse. Especially with the obstruction Obama is receiving from the right. It would take anyone in the Presidency time to turn it around. During the Great Depression, FDR's success was in part because he was elected to 4 terms and was given time to get this country back on track. It took Bush 8 years to turn the surplus he inherited from Clinton into a big deficit that President Obama inherited. Now after only 3 1/2 years people like you are complaining. You need to do a little homework on the subject before commenting again. Otherwise, you just appear to be ignorant.

  • Redneck... David L... 2012/06/15 23:02:23

No, you are deflecting the point. Bush is the President that deregulated laws put in place by FDR (a Democrat) to keep Wall Street on a leash to prevent mistakes made, that got us into the Great Depression. Don't blame this on the Democrats....Bush deregulated not the Democrats!!!!

no, I put the blame where it belongs, democrats like FDR, CARTER, AND CLINTON's failed policies.
