A 16-year-old Moroccan girl has committed suicide after a judge ordered her to marry her rapist, according to Moroccan media reports. Last year, Amina’s parents filed charges against their daughter’s rapist, a man 10 years older than her, but it was only recently that a judge in the northern city of Tangier decided that instead of punishing him, the two must be married. The court’s decision to forcibly marry Amina to her rapist was supposed to “resolve” the damage of sexual violation against her, but it led to more suffering in the unwelcoming home of her rapist/husband’s family. Traumatized by the painful experience of rape, Amina decided to end her life by consuming rat poison in the house of her husband’s family.
According to the newspaper, this type of forced marriage is rooted in local rural traditions to safeguard the honor of girls who are raped. Moroccan penal code exempts a rapist from punishment if he agrees to marry his victim. Feminists have long wanted an amendment to this article of law, which provides an opportunity for a rapist to avoid punishment. The story has widely spread on Twitter and on Facebook, with many in Morocco demanding action against the judge who issued the ruling.

No, it hasn't been changed, at least not yet. The 16-year-old rape victim only committed suicide last Saturday, so this Moroccan law hasn't been amended as of this date. "Under Article 475 of Morocco’s penal code, the kidnapper of a minor can escape prosecution by marrying his victim and preserving her family’s honor." [News from one day ago.] IMO, it's just unbelievable that a girl dishonors her family by losing her virginity, even if it's at the hands [or more specifically, dick] of a rapist. Crazy. +1I agree, dude. This loophole in Moroccan law sure does have things back-asswards. The rapist can avoid being prosecuted for sexual assault by marrying his victim. The girl who was brutally violated against her will dishonors her family by losing her virginity, even if it's at the hands [or, more appropriately, penis] of a pervert. I'm surprised that there haven't been more outcries from human rights organizations around the world, protesting against this archaic law. Really, the Moroccan government can't reprove OR remove the judge in this particular case, because he was merely following a loophole in the law. I'm 100% in agreement with your train of thought, that if it had been one of my family members who was raped and then forced to marry her assailant, the sexual deviant and the judge would be dead before the wedding date!
