Morgan Freeman does not consider President Barack Obama "America's first black president." The Oscar-winning actor black actor told NPR's 'Tell Me More' host Michel Martin: First thing that always pops into my head regarding our president is that all of the people who are setting up this barrier for him ... they just conveniently forget that Barack had a mama, and she was white — very white American, Kansas, middle of America," Freeman said. "There was no argument about who he is or what he is. America's first black president hasn't arisen yet. He's not America's first black president — he's America's first mixed-race president.

The majority of the people call him black..in their minds he is black. When someone is biracial - black and white - people consider that person black..right or wrong..it is what it is.

My granddaughter and grandson are half black and half white. They refer to themselfs and their "like" friends as mixed.

my son is biracial...the larger society..the majority of ppl..depending on how the kid looks will refer to them as a light skinned black person..thats my experience

How does your son identify himself? Mixed, black or white? I've spent a lot of time with my grandchildren and their friends. The only time they refer to people as being black is when both parents are black, the same for whites. All others they call mixed, reconizing both parents and denying none. I don't see why a white parent would not be reconized, by referring to a mixed child as black is to deny one parent.

I identify my child as mine..lol..he's my only child and I love him to no end. He is 21 now and in college. He has white friends and black friends..he looks more white than black..he has light curly hair and green eyes..he is beautiful..his dad's grandfather was white..and his dad's mother looked white...he doesn't deny me or his dad..we are both really good to him..and get along really well..even though we aren't together anymore. I think there are specific identities and socially larger identities..I don't know how else to explain it..to my son's friends he might be mixed..but to the larger society...he is a light skinned black kid. When people are familiar with you..they tend to want to more specifically identify you...strangers are different..people in society pick the easiest most convenient way of identifying a person..it's how our brain's work...color is most obvious and so that is why even a 'mixed' kid is quickly identified by the larger society as black.

The problem now isn't if he is or isn't the first "black" president its that he isn't "black enough". Mostly for these libs they are prempting their defense for the election of a second "black man". They want to be able to say the first guy failed not because his policies sucked, not because he didn't have a clue what it means to be American, and not because he didnt really want to protect and defend the constitution; he failed because he wasn't "black enough"

Just a few months back all these people including Freeman were gushing over Mr Obama's greatness as a black man now... well it seems the montra has changed.

But as always that is what you get when you judge (or vote for ) a man based on the color of his skin rather than the content of his character

Black Americans fared much better under the Clinton administation. Bill Cinton addressed Black issues and concerns. The jobless rate in the Black communities is nearly twice the national average and higher than Hispanics. Young Black men are still being incarcerated at a higher rate than Whites, Asians, and Hispanics. Obama avoids those issues, but he is quick to come to the aid of Hispanics and the Dream Act and champion Gay Marriage isfor Gays/Lesbians. But he virtually ignores Blacks except to election times.

I hate to break it to you....... the black community is broken. We have to many teen mommas raising or not raising kids. Caused they are kid's themselves. Obama, Bus, Clinton can only do so much. It not there responsibility to raise respectable young black adults
  • KLTLUVRLT1 Raphy 2012/07/11 01:05:36
    KLTLUVRLT1
Oh, okay. Perhaps that is why Obama focuses more on Hispanic, White liberals, and Gay/Lesbian issues?
  • Raphy KLTLUVRLT1 2012/07/11 02:51:58
    Raphy
Man...those other groups are just as messed up as the blacks. He knows his real votes are going to come from the whites, hispanics, and gays/lesbians. If I was running for president I will try to focus on them too. He already got the black vote, predominately.....
  • KLTLUVRLT1 Raphy 2012/07/11 06:24:01
    KLTLUVRLT1
But why does he have the black votes, Raphy? There were six major candidates plus Obama running in the 2008 Democratic primaries/caucuses. All of the Democratic candidates had a more distinquished record than Barack obama on issues such as civil rights, human rights, and advocacy for the poor. Yet, 93% of Blacks voting in the Democratic primaries voted for Barack Obama. Why? Because his father was an African?
  • Raphy KLTLUVRLT1 2012/07/12 03:57:23

    1. 'Black' is not a race nor skin colour. But I'll just go along with this for a moment.

    2. I am quite sure he still would count as 'black' whether full or not, just as an Irishman would still count as an Irishman even if he were also an Englishman. He is simply both, and will never be neither.

Obama identifies as Black because he looks like a Black man and he is judged as one. Technically, many of us are not necessarily black or white. I do not see the purpose of harping on this issue. I do hope that one day a man or woman with two Black parents will have the opportunity to become president.

Morgan Freeman has a caucasian great great grandfather. Most Black Americans are not 100% African.

I agree with Freeman to a certain extent. He is indeed half white and half black; however, he self-identifies as black (regardless of whether he does it for politically expediency). Therefore, he is both our first mixed race president AND our first black president.

See.. I took a whole different take on this.. When I heard this it struck me that Freeman was buying into this BS that the ONLY possible reason why ANYBODY might say anything critical of this President is because he is Black.. NOBODY could POSSIBLY have a LEGITIMATE negative thing to say about him and certainly ANY opposition to his policies or any attempt to point out where they FAILED must LIKEWISE be because they are the Policies of a Black Man..

NOBODY buys into the BS of the Left Wing like a Left Winger.. They don't even take the time to QUESTION it..

Look.. We’ve been hearing this garbage since BEFORE Obama was elected.. If he hadn’t been elected President then America was going to be a Racist Country,, etc.. ( As THOUGH these people haven’t BEEN saying EXACTLY that for decades anyway )

And you can’t bring up anything about any of his policies even TODAY without a HORDE of Left Wingers CLamering that you MUST be RACIST.. That you're ONLY saying what you're saying because it's a black man in the White House..

I think that Freeman doesn’t have that high an opinion of the American People.. If he can convince America that voting for Obama is not REALLY voting for a Black Man then Obama MIGHT just have a chance this November..

MOST people aren’t against Obama because he’s black and they AREN’T going to like what he’s done any better JUST because somebody comes along and makes him out to be a WHITE Man..

Freeman should stick to molesting his grand daughter.. He's MUCH better at THAT then he is in politics..

It is as simple as black or white. Under Jim Crow Law Obama would have been forced to drink from black only fountains and use black only restrooms. He is not the first mixed race president, that statement is absolutely ignorant unless you live in a two race society. america is made of multiple races. This should be posted under entertainment, not News and Politics. for Christ sake....

If Obama got into a time machine and got stuck 2000 years in the past, with his remains being found buried in southern Europe or north Africa, he would be "white". If he lived in Brazil today, he would be (some silly made up Portuguese word). If he was a native of Libya, Palestine or Algeria today, he would be "Arab".

By a hard definition, no he is not African American. His ancestors were not brought here as chattel. That definition does not permit whites moving here from South Africa or Nigerians to call themselves such.

The above notwithstanding to the fact Pres. Obama does consider himself a "Black man". He should be given the right to do such. I accept him as such.
