More Men are Taking 'Pink Collar' Jobs: OK or Unfair?

Times are tough out there! Jobs are few and far between, for men and women. And men particularly are exploring some traditionally female-dominated professions. The New York Times reports that between 2000 and 2010 "occupations that are more than 70 percent female accounted for almost a third of all job growth for men, double the share of the previous decade."

As traditionally male jobs in construction and manufacturing dry up, men are branching out, and many are pleasantly surprised to find stability, as well as less stress in some cases and more time at home, according to the report. The Times says: "While women continue to make inroads into prestigious, high-wage professions dominated by men, more men are reaching for the dream in female-dominated occupations that their fathers might never have considered." Dental assistants, receptionists, nurses... it's all fair game. Or is it? Are men taking spots women have worked for years to earn?

Not where I'm from, I had a surgery done to my knee and most of the nurses assigned to my room weren't attractive. Now the physical therapists...Those men were very attractive. I almost wanted to make it seem like I was weak so I could keep going to the sessions, but alas I wanted to get back out to the court and continue playing tennis.

During these economic times, a job is a job which is pretty much gender-blind. For instance, should an issue be made when a female successfully pursues a male-dominated field and continues to make strides with opportunities in her career.

Gender shouldn't be a factor in what type of job a person decides to pursue.

It isn't that gender is a factor in what type of job a person decides to pursue, but that the genders tend to pursue particular types of jobs.

I was trying to say that it shouldn't matter if males pursue a job where mostly females work or vice versa because gender really shouldn't matter. I think gender does play a factor though, I saw comments that made snide remarks towards males taking the "pink collar" jobs, there are probably many people who still abide by gender roles and pursue what they think they're supposed to.

Ah, alright. Yes, there are probably some jobs that some men refuse to take because it's a "woman's work." On the other hand, there are traditionally male jobs that many women wouldn't even consider taking, either because of complication, danger, or strenuousness.

I really hate it when people say that cooking, cleaning and nursing are 'a woman's job'. Before women were allowed to work, MEN had those jobs. Women can do anything, it's not just limited to nursing and secretary work.

It's hard out there, man. Money don't grow on trees. We got bills to pay, we got mouths to feed; no nothing in this world's for free. You know we can't slow down, we can't hold back, though you know we wish we could. You know there ain't no rest for the wicked until we close our eyes for good..... Second time I have done that using "Ain't No Rest For The Wicked" by Cage The Elephant. XD

The army is for the defense of this country. Our government misuses it.

Men belong in the workplace, so they can support the females. That's their proper role.
