More Men are Taking 'Pink Collar' Jobs: OK or Unfair?

Times are tough out there! Jobs are few and far between, for men and women. And men particularly are exploring some traditionally female-dominated professions. The New York Times reports that between 2000 and 2010 "occupations that are more than 70 percent female accounted for almost a third of all job growth for men, double the share of the previous decade."

As traditionally male jobs in construction and manufacturing dry up, men are branching out, and many are pleasantly surprised to find stability, as well as less stress in some cases and more time at home, according to the report. The Times says: "While women continue to make inroads into prestigious, high-wage professions dominated by men, more men are reaching for the dream in female-dominated occupations that their fathers might never have considered." Dental assistants, receptionists, nurses... it's all fair game. Or is it? Are men taking spots women have worked for years to earn?

Nurses are not there to sexually satisfy randy men. We are trained medical professionals. I once has some grabby old bastard try to put the grip on my boob when I was helping him to the bathroom. I told him straight up: "sir, if you do that again, I will drop your ass on the floor." Nurses resent being depicted as pieces of ass. The only place that nurses are sex objects is in porno movies.

Rosey, i hadnt that in mind involving something sexual. Its just that is more pleasant to have women nurses (because usually women are nicer and more kind than men, even if a man is a nice one) but it wasnt a sexual innuendo that was referring to my last comment. I have seen men nurses and i have a guess that here where i live there are more men nurses than there in usa.
But its ok, probably you have talked with many men that their intentions werent so good about women nurses. So my bad if i made you think i had some warped thoughts about the nurses.

I want more male nurses. They are an asset, overall, I believe.

Of course it's OK. If it's OK for women to seek out traditionally male-dominated jobs, then it's OK for men to seek out traditionally female-dominated jobs.

    It's called "equality".

I used to work as a patent and trade mark attorney in the steel industry in the 70s. Now I work for the cosmetics industry specialising in perfumes and nail varnish (for women I should add).

Only by definition that a nurse earns less than a doctor due to being less qualified to lead surgeries and run a hospital...for example.

Im talking about less pay for the Same job.....of course doctors and nurses shouldnt earn the same.

as long as men pay the majority of the bills, buy that big diamond ring and pay for all dates and the gas to go on them, I don't want to hear about how women are paid less.
Men also work two times longer on the job. oh and women spend less on cars. Women are more likely to buy things they do not necessarily need....I could go on. I can't count how much money I wasted on women in the past. If I saved it all I could buy a new home I bet.

What has any of that got to do with women getting paid less for doing THE SAME job?

doesn't happen without reason...like time in the job or the education. I have been an employer for 11 years and I look all around me...women hop from job to job quickly so they go back to making the starting wage. Men tend to stick it out.
Sometimes a woman will quit the job to raise her kids and then go backout and start working again....yeah, like I will give her the raises she might have gotten had she stayed with me all this time..NOT. You will start back at the bottom like everyone else unless you have something really good to bring to the table like an ivy league education or a lot of certificates. Not once has the pay gap ever been truly proven. too much goes on behind the scenes and until you are an employer, you just don't know...you are just a clueless observer who watches the news too much and we all news is nothing more than a drama...a pathetic soap opera.

must be very rewarding too. i had some that were military and they knew less about the human body than I, who is fitness and nutrition certified, do. I fired them and fixed myself up in 6 months to near perfection.

yeah, you get that. People get into their little rut and stop trying to learn. They get their litle routine that they go through with each patient and stop looking for differences between patients. It's very easy to do. I, myself could use an anatomy refresher. I use muscle group terminology rather than individual muscles and a few particular muscle isolation exercises, but origins, insertions and some individual muscle names are getting fuzzy, but I still know what they do and how to strengthen them. Were they military PTs? I could assume that military rehabs are pretty swamped and it's become an assembly line in there.

Did you read the article? No one is speaking against this, its just the question they asked of voters, and by the way, 94% of women are cool with it and 92% of men are, so once again women are still more likely to support equality, even when its for men,,,
  • Brynn Leigh-Anne 2012/06/16 03:36:28

I wasn't referring to the article. I was referring to some of the comments. And your conclusion about how women are more likely to support equality is SEXIST.

I think that it is perfectly O.K. for men to take jobs that formerly were considered women jobs. A job is a job, and if the man is comfortable in that job, and can make a living wage from it, then he should not hesitate to do so. Maybe by doing these less taxing and pressure sensitive jobs. will give him less stress, and prolong his life. You know that as a general rule, women live longer than men, and that is usually because their jobs are less stressful, and dangerous to their health.

Its gender equality- equal rights, equal work, equal pay.

Not women can branch out into traditionally male dominated roles but men can't branch out to female dominated ones. Anyone can do whatever they want as long as they're good at it.

All employment should be basted on skills and not factor in gender, at this point in American history any color collar is good...
  • k fleming john n 2012/06/13 05:05:33

Exactly, any good slow cooked meat should have been basted, it retains more moisture and tenderness that way.
Any gender can acceptably do this, but generally it's a woman's job. :P

German is much easier then English in both spelling and grammar, but still someone should be able to determine "whether" something is being used as a foundation for establishing position or a cooking ingredient; "basted" on the subject...

lol. So did I until your reply. If SH removed their spell checker half of the people here would not be able to post. I had a friend in Germany who once asked me to translate the word butterfly into German, so I answered; "oh that's easy Butter-Fliege, which translates into Flying Butter. It took years for me to live down the nickname...
