More Men are Taking 'Pink Collar' Jobs: OK or Unfair?

Times are tough out there! Jobs are few and far between, for men and women. And men particularly are exploring some traditionally female-dominated professions. The New York Times reports that between 2000 and 2010 "occupations that are more than 70 percent female accounted for almost a third of all job growth for men, double the share of the previous decade."

As traditionally male jobs in construction and manufacturing dry up, men are branching out, and many are pleasantly surprised to find stability, as well as less stress in some cases and more time at home, according to the report. The Times says: "While women continue to make inroads into prestigious, high-wage professions dominated by men, more men are reaching for the dream in female-dominated occupations that their fathers might never have considered." Dental assistants, receptionists, nurses... it's all fair game. Or is it? Are men taking spots women have worked for years to earn?

I don't find it weird in the least. But I do sense some gender discrimination in that women often remain tellers for their whole banking careers, while male bank tellers quickly move up to becoming loan officers or VPs. The teller position seems to be a 'start at the bottom' for them.

but then again if the women who applied weren't experienced enough for the role then it is fair, but men and women should have equal opportunities

Are you retarded? It is okay for women to take traditionally male jobs, so it is only fair that men can take traditionally female jobs.

Its true that more men than women have lost their jobs in the recession. I think men are taking the assistant jobs like this because they are hard working and good at getting tasks done for people. Meanwhile you have a lot of women taking over sales jobs because people would rather have a pair of tits selling their products because it just looks good. A lot of women don't mind getting 'fleeced' on their paychecks in sales while men would complain. A lot of women use their sexuality to get ahead like this and the market promotes it. Men are just trying to take the jobs they can get.

Of course I'm going to think it's fair because I'm one of those men. I love being a nurse. However, since men have really started getting into the field the rate of pay has actually gone up so maybe it's a good thing for both men and women. And looking at the future, we are still in need of nurses so I don't feel like we male nurses are taking jobs from women.

It's far more manly to do what used to be considered a woman's job than to sit at home.

I think this is really cool, but it is not a new idea, nursing, dental assistant, receptionist etc., these jobs have been open to everyone who could meet the qualifications the only thing new about this, is the pink collar label. just can't get used to the idea, Wow, our American colors collars are pink white and blue!

Sometimes you have no choice...I was a male nurse. A profession that started out all-male in America (battlefield medics), and then gradually became virtually all-female. But it is now no longer nearly as rare for men to pursue it.

My wife is a software engineer. That is typically a man's job. Since she has a man's job there had to be a man somewhere to fill the woman's position she didn't take. Right?

Nothing really unfair. It's a hard world and the best canidates get the best and having a male nurse might make some male patients more comfortable.
