MORE Cheating Scandals in Schools ....

"No Child Left Behind" ..
obviously ..
IS leaving children BEHIND in practice ..

Remember the article on the pervasive Cheating at the Atlanta Public School District ..
http://www.sodahead.com/united-states/a-tale-of-teachers-acad...

NOW Pennsylvania is REPORTING (a Government Report) ..
That "found statistical irregularities that suggest cheating on standardized tests may have happened in 60 state schools"
(NOTE That there is a VALID Question here .. WHY was that report NOT RELEASED 2 yrs ago?)
http://www.myfoxphilly.com/dpp/news/education/report-shows-po...
(LINK to the PA Report)
http://www.myfoxphilly.com/dpp/news/education/report-shows-po...

Feverishly working behind the scenes ..
to /CHANGE/ .. to Erase .. to CORRECT ..
PRIOR to actually processing the standardized Competency Tests ..

WHY? TO meet the Academic 'GOALS' .. (artificially, by any means)

(and the result .. Children passing that should NEVER have passed at all)
MEANING ..
We have Individuals with Diplomas .. who can NOT READ, Write, Spell, Do basic Math or Science, can't even show ANY competency.

Then there's the SAME PROBLEM of FRAUD showing up in the Washington DC Schools ..
The Washington POST is noting ..
"Department of Education ... is involved in an investigation into whether cheating occurred at D.C. schools under the watch of education reform darling Michelle Rhee."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/rhee-acknowledg...

The USA Today investigation found this ...
"more than 1,000 classrooms around the country where students made statistically improbable gains on standardized tests over the course of just one year"
http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2011-03-28-1Aschooltes...

SO .. what does Education Secretary Arne Duncan have to say?
"testing does not encourage cheating and is necessary to ensure schools are adequately educating their students"

Here's the link to the articles ..

We need to get back to a system where basics are taught instead of PC social mores. Where children either learn or they fail and repeat the classes. Some will not learn, others cannot. Those students must be placed in appropriate classes or allowed to continue failing.

Any teacher can only teach to the best of his/her ability--no one can force a child to learn.

And parents need to return to actively participating in their childrens schools and insisting homework be done.

The dumbing down of schools is the result of parental apathy, teachers forced to promote kids who cannot pass classroom tests, government intervention to blame the teachers rather than the parents and students.

No child left behind has produced HS grads who are functionally illiterate. Colleges have been forced to have remedial math and English classes for incoming students.

No child left behind is a travesty.

I think testing IS necessary, the testing isnt the problem, its the people working at those schools who are the problem.

Maybe instead of letting the schools handle the testing, we should let an independent source handle it who has nothing to gain nor lose by the results.

I guarantee you that if all schools had the testing guidelines in place that we do, there would be no way to cheat. There is a testing coordinator who issues the tests to the teachers in the morning and gets them as soon as students are finished testing. Teachers do not test their own students, and are assigned to a class in a completely different grade level so they have no idea who may or may not need help. There are monitors constantly walking through the rooms as their job for the entire day is to cover a certain number of rooms and do nothing but walk from room to room observing. I don't remember this much security at my certification testing!

This is what happens when you take personal responsibility out of school.

When everyone passes. When everybody gets a trophy. Where everyone is a victim of 'the man'.

    Now reap what is sown.

Unionized substandard folks bringing down good teachers. Excelling only in mediocrity.

    Me too Rodney, me too.

I was blessed by being able to keep my kids in private school.

Both of them are very grateful that we gave up other things for their education. Both are very responsible and smart as hell. I've messed up quite a bit in my years on earth, but my kids, I think I've done right by them.

That's why I quit teaching and went into librarianship. I still get to interact with the students and teach them things they need like how to research, use databases, use Microsoft Office applications, and of course share great books with them. Until the government got involved I loved teaching and using my talents to get concepts into their heads. I was forced into using a district-wide math program that was scripted. My students didn't get fractions, so I used food and they got it. I used whole pizzas and pies (on different days) for round fractions. We cut them, took out pieces and they were able to tell the fraction left or the fraction that was missing. We took it deeper by tasting the different kinds of pizza or pie and deciding which was their favorite. We graphed the results. For bar fractions we used Hershey's bars or Kit Kat already sectioned or I would cut up other kinds of candy bars. When it came time to put it to paper, I would tell them to remember the pizzas & pies and the candy bars. We did sort of the same thing with M&Ms. Students had their own bag, and they charted how many of each color were in the bag. We did a class chart of all results then predicted what would be in an unopened bag...critical thinking and reasoning skills! My students kicked butt on test...

My students kicked butt on tests requiring fractions, charts and graphs, and predicting. Now, thanks to government regulations, teachers may no longer use food for lessons if the students are going to eat in during the school day. WTH!
I loved teaching, but could no longer handle the BS that I felt tied my hands to get concepts across.

Yeah, it would be those treats and the school lunch...not the crap their parents feed them while they are away from school. Oh well, I don't have to worry about it anymore. I just keep to doing what I do in the library and loving it! I just hate that great teachers are leaving the profession!
