Hanna 2012/01/10 23:23:20
GOP Presidential candidate Mitt Romney has taken harsh, anti-immigrant positions over the past few months. He even vowed to veto the DREAM Act. Last night, NBC's Rock Center on Romney's ties to Mexico. His father was born there. He's got lots of relatives still living there. And, they don't agree with Mitt's current views on immigration.

Watch it til the end for the discussion between Brian Williams and Mike Taibbi, who filed the report. Taibbi states that Romney's dad, George, who was born in Mexico, "could be the poster boy for the Dream Act":

You will not hear Mitt talk about this. Mexican Romneys are descendants of Miles Park Romney, who came to the Chihuahua desert in 1885 seeking refuge from U.S. anti-polygamy laws. Gaskell Romney, Mitt’s grandfather, settled in Mexico and Mitt’s father, George Romney, was born in nearby Colonia Dublan. They led very prosperous lives there. It could be argued the Romneys are Mexican since Miles Park Romney crossed the border in 1884, rejecting the Edmund Act that in 1882 declared polygamy a felony.

It's really a fine pioneer story, and Mitt still has relatives ( second cousin) living in Mexico. But why isn't the story more well known? Would people really care? Sure, some would. They'd go back to the birth certificate brouhaha, and we'd go from a Kenyan colonial mentality to a Mariachi band in the East Room.

Romney was born in Detroit, Michigan.[1] He was the youngest child of George W. Romney, who by 1948 had become an automobile executive, and Lenore Romney (née LaFount). His mother was a native of Logan, Utah, and his father had been born in a Mormon colony in Chihuahua, Mexico, to American parents.[2] Romney's ancestry is predominantly English, as well as Scottish and German.[3] As a sixth-generation member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,[4][5] Romney is descended from a genealogically interconnected political family sometimes known as the Pratt–Romneys.

Living in a German Colony in Mexico doesn't make you a Mexican...Mr Romney is enjoying throwing this in to get the hispanic vote. He knows this "segment of society" as someone here put it,has a lot of political pull. His ancestors were mormons and wanted to live the good life of having several wifes and not be bothered by political laws. His grandfather may have been born there, but, with all due repect, was as German as German can be

As long as at least one of his parents was a citizen and lived in the US prior to Mitt's birth, he would be a "natural born citizen" and eligible to run for president.

but he was born here, so (unlike a certain segment of our society) I have no qualms with his qualifying as "natural born citizen" just because one parent might not have been.

Sorry to bust your bubble there Rustaroni but we all live according to our own personal beliefs. There for you should have said the left, right and center all believe people should have certain political viewpoints based upon their races.

Actually, the left believes if you're gonna play this BS birther nonsense, based upon whose parents were born where, then be prepared to reap what you yourselves sow. Now that that's out of the way, just what have you to say to the FACT that Mitt's daddy is a......MEXICAN???
  • Rusty S... unclepat 2012/01/12 00:47:29

If Mitt's daddy was not a U.S. Citizen at the time of Mitt's birth, then Mitt is not a natural born citizen and not eligible to hold the office of President.
