Mitch Daniels, as Indiana governor, decertified public sector unions. Would you like him to do the same to all federal government unions as President?

On his first day Daniels reversed an executive order signed by a Democratic predecessor granting collective bargaining rights to state employees. Union membership plummeted overnight. “I think they were happy to have the extra thousand dollars that would have gone to dues,” Kitchell said. Decertifying the public-employees’ union has spared Indiana pressures that have crippled other state governments. Unhindered by union demands, the governor instituted a “pay for performance” scheme, rewarding state employees who met explicit goals with raises ranging from 4 percent to 10 percent. The salaries of underperforming employees stayed flat. No one was fired, but every time a job went vacant a supervisor had to justify hiring a replacement. The number of state employees has fallen from 35,000 to under 30,000, back where it was in 1982.

Wow, really, you mean if you don't have unions you need less people to get the work done AND the work actually gets done?! Who would have thought?!

Right now I just don't know enough about Mitch Daniels. I will look into him though.
Great idea from him. So he dropped state employment in the government sector by 5,000? That's always good news.

Best cost cutting move we immediately take. It will have an adverse initial impact on unemployment, but the reduced expenditures are more than welcome.

Public sector unions are greedy SOBs and act no differently than the American mafia by bribing officials to get them elected who in turn give them lavish pay, benefits, and pensions at the expense of the constituents who public officials are supposed to represent.

middle class existed long before unions ever drove countless industries overseas, thus decreasing the middle class in America. It was created by capitalism over 500 years ago.

If it wasn't for the unions, all the working class would still be working for peanuts. Walmart workers wouldn't be making what they are if it wasn't for the unions pushing them. The greedy industries just want to make it all. Many that moved over seas didn't have union workers to start with. As a construction worker, it would have been impossible for me to raise a family working as a scab. The union made it possible by getting health insurance, and a halfway decent wage.

if it wasn't for public sector unions, the states wouldn't be bankrupt.

if it wasn't for private sector unions, we'd still have many industries still in America, and our children wouldn't be so far behind the rest of the world in education.

Apparently you were one of the "children left behind" . Unions have done much to help the middle class.

Enjoy the next decade as State after State decertifies unions, just like Mitch Daniels in Indiana has done. Next will be Wisconsin then Ohio...

It is not unions that should keep management from operating in the interest of the public and stakeholders...today it is obvious that the $6.7 Trillion public sector operations nearly 50% of GDP or 1 out of 5 workers is 40% too large and needs dramatic reductions. The public sector pension system is a fraud on the taxpayers and this needs to end...The political managers who benefit from this sham are afraid of labor strikes which are necessary to control this massive cost increase ...we just do not have managers who are leaders and competent...nor do they have the guts to represent the taxpayers interests...

unions bribe public officials to get them elected who in turn give them lavish and unsustainable pay, benefits, and pensions. If they refuse, the unions target them and bribe some other official who will do their bidding. This is no different than what the mafia does.

compared to the last 2 years where the current Marxist in chief just nationalized about five different industries to watch them all fail miserably, I suspect the 12 year old kid running the lemonade stand will be able to win 50 states against Obama.

President Obama has been smeared, backstabbed and swiftboated by the right wing tea party retards who believe every lie on GOP Fixed News and from bloated idiots like Beck and Limbaugh. President Obama is not a Marxist, Nazi, Communist or any other crazy crap that nutjobs like you come up with. He is working to save this country from the ruin that started with republican deregulation, no oversight, and greed and corrupt. President Obama has already accomplished more than any other president in four years.

The public sector union is a huge infringement on the principles of the free market and constitutionalism. However, I fully support the rights of workers to form private unions, should they choose to do so.

I don't care if those in the private sector unionize, but the laws should not be so stacked in favor of unionization and so difficult to end them. The law should be fairly applied to all.

Public sector unions need to be eliminated for the good of Americans.

You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children's children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done

Unions are a major reason for the downfall of the American Economy and need done away with in general, but public employees should never have union ties, far too much corruption within the unions to be of benefit to the public.
