Microchipped School Uniforms: Smart or Scary?

Anxious American, have no fear. This news comes to us from Vitoria da Conquista, Brazil, where The Associated Press reports 25 public schools are installing tracking devices into their students' uniforms. The devices will notify parents, via text message, whenever their child enters the school grounds and when the child is 20 minutes late. It's expected to be implemented next year, and is costing the government $670,000.

The city's education secretary, Coriolano Moraes, told AP, "We noticed that many parents would bring their children to school but would not see if they actually entered the building because they always left in a hurry to get to work on time. They would always be surprised when told of the number times their children skipped class. I believe we may be setting a trend because we have received many requests from all over Brazil for information on how our system works." Do you think microchipping school uniforms is a smart tactic -- or just plain creepy?

if the chip also notifies when the student leaves the school grounds-great. but i see kids having a change of clothes in their backpack, slipping into the bathroom to change and leaving the uniform stashed behind a trash can or something, to be picked up later when they come back to change b4 being picked up or riding the bus home.

And what happens when some pervert hacks into the system, giving false info? Or some whacked out parent? Or whacked out teacher? Hopefully Obama doesn't hear about this, or he'd probably make it law, with a price tag of 670 billion in tax payer's money, & fines for non-compliance-gee, it sounds like Obamacare!

This would be fine if the implementation and control of the output of the chips were controlled by the parents ONLY. If the school or government controlled the information flow it would be extremely scary!

Yeah it's smart, but who does that?!? Do you really need that? It makes you seem like some sort of stalker. There are other methods too, you know. That's a little creepy.

I could not possibly support the use of such chips. In doing so, an important line is crossed and we just can't allow our society to go there.

    1) creepy in an Orwellian type way 2) It's a waste of money 3) They could just change clothes and still do the same thing. It's trying to fix the problem without asking the questions ''Why?'' If you don't know why kids would rather skip school than go, than you can't stop it from happening no matter how hard you try.

    1. Better in the uniform than in the child; but I am not opposed to smart-chipping a kid.
    2. If you voted "scary" I don't believe that you have ever known the sheer terror of having your child go missing for two hours and forty-five minutes after school to go playing with a "friend", leaving no contact information or indication of his whereabouts!

    @Sadisticon, I voted
'smart.' I am a parent ad grandparent and I see all the things kids can get into today. I am also from Atlanta and lived through the "Atlanta Missing and Murdered Kids" crisis in the 70's and my kids were the age of the kids coming up missing and murdered. Something like this may have helped then....

That must have been very frightening. I was not a parent at the time but I do remember it, admittedly however I lived in Ohio.

I agree that it would be nice to not have to go through the fear of where your child is after school, but micro-chipping your child seems to take it a bit too far. And I agree, better in the uniform than the child, but the child could just change clothes.
  • Sadisticon Nichole 2012/03/27 23:50:37

Yeah - like I'd tell him which clothes had the chip (the bookbag, Jordans and red baseball cap)!

Well that's your prerogative, but according to the article, the chip is only in the schools' uniforms, so it'd be rather obvious in that instance.

Reminds me of the South Park episode "Child Abduction is Not Funny", where the parents got taken in by sensational news reports about dangers to their kids from abductors to the point that they surrounded the entire town with a giant wall, outfitted the kids with 'Child Tracker', a huge gps-tracking helmet, and even decided to sent all the children away to protect them when they learned most child abductions are perpetrated by the abducted's parents.

Scary, but the one good thing would be if it protected children from abductors. Having said that, it hardly ever happens and the children need to learn to go to school out of a respect for parents, teachers etc. An occasional skip is okay I think.

Good point but I bet they could still track them if needed. The whole school/class angle is silly really all the kids have to do is get their friends to take the microchipped clothes to class for them... I doubt the parents would go to the work to actually pay attention....if they were not aware of the problem to begin with I doubt they'll be on top of it now...you know what I mean?
