Anxious American, have no fear. This news comes to us from Vitoria da Conquista, Brazil, where The Associated Press reports 25 public schools are installing tracking devices into their students' uniforms. The devices will notify parents, via text message, whenever their child enters the school grounds and when the child is 20 minutes late. It's expected to be implemented next year, and is costing the government $670,000.
The city's education secretary, Coriolano Moraes, told AP, "We noticed that many parents would bring their children to school but would not see if they actually entered the building because they always left in a hurry to get to work on time. They would always be surprised when told of the number times their children skipped class. I believe we may be setting a trend because we have received many requests from all over Brazil for information on how our system works." Do you think microchipping school uniforms is a smart tactic -- or just plain creepy?

Smart+11if the chip also notifies when the student leaves the school grounds-great. but i see kids having a change of clothes in their backpack, slipping into the bathroom to change and leaving the uniform stashed behind a trash can or something, to be picked up later when they come back to change b4 being picked up or riding the bus home.

I'm tired of the "Microchipping" fad.
This is no different than an ID chip in a name badge that opens doors in a business. Every time you open a door with your ID badge, you are logged and tracked as entering the room or building. This is no different.
"RFID is already in use all around us. Ever chipped your pet dog or cat with an ID tag? Or used an EZPass through a toll booth? Or paid for gas using ExxonMobils' SpeedPass? Then you've used RFID." ~ http://www.securityfocus.com/...
Google "RFID Chip" for Peter's sake. http://bit.ly/GUBrJV
Stores are suppose to disable them when you purchase the item. I agree that the potential for misuse is huge and since the corporations are paying the politicians and talking heads, any regulation of these chips will have Republicans screaming big government.
Besides, after the Patriot Act there is no such thing as privacy anymore. There are camera on every corner, every web site you visit is tracked, license plate readers track your automobile, government agencies filtering all cell phone calls & email messages & web sites for key words.
There is no privacy to protect anymore, it is all gone.
Either way, I think it's disturbing that schools and workplaces are becoming more and more involved in our personal lives.
.... wait, WHAT?!
Forget how scary this idea is, how about the cost!! Spending THIS much on TRACKING kids?? Isn't there a BETTER place for it to go?!
You know, somewhere like actually funding EDUCATION or putting it towards MATERIALS for the schools???
I mean I don't know how Brazil's education system is fairing, but regardless of that, this is STILL a waste of money... leashes and microchips are meant for PETS, not KIDS.
Please, don't let this come to America someday. PLEASE.
It should be used in everyday situations; imagine when your remote control goes missing, or your phone, or even something like the car keys. The idea of placing tracking devices for most of the everyday things we use in an ingenious idea I've always had since age 7! Hahaha
