Anxious American, have no fear. This news comes to us from Vitoria da Conquista, Brazil, where The Associated Press reports 25 public schools are installing tracking devices into their students' uniforms. The devices will notify parents, via text message, whenever their child enters the school grounds and when the child is 20 minutes late. It's expected to be implemented next year, and is costing the government $670,000.

The city's education secretary, Coriolano Moraes, told AP, "We noticed that many parents would bring their children to school but would not see if they actually entered the building because they always left in a hurry to get to work on time. They would always be surprised when told of the number times their children skipped class. I believe we may be setting a trend because we have received many requests from all over Brazil for information on how our system works." Do you think microchipping school uniforms is a smart tactic -- or just plain creepy?

if the chip also notifies when the student leaves the school grounds-great. but i see kids having a change of clothes in their backpack, slipping into the bathroom to change and leaving the uniform stashed behind a trash can or something, to be picked up later when they come back to change b4 being picked up or riding the bus home.

The school needs to take attendance, not treat the kids like boxes on an assembly line.

And pointless. All it takes is a change of clothes and that thing becomes worthless anyway.

I'm tired of the "Microchipping" fad.

Sadly its not a fad. They are working to make it the future.

Unfortunately you are right. First animals to get us used to tracking something for "safety" purposes. Now kids.

They said they wanted to microchip us. Its coming. They are getting the kids acclimated so when they hit adulthood it won't be a shock to them.

I feel this is not a good thing, but another game of...let's control. Control their where abouts on school grounds and them leaving could well be the begining of controling their where abouts after school as well and then could lead into more controling with other things, etc, etc. How much controling do humans want?

It's not the kids I don't trust. It's the perverts in and around the schools.

Schools are responsible for the welfare of every single student and the courts have taken this to extreme. If a educator steps out of a room for 1 minutes and a 17 year old hurts them self, they school is liable. Schools need to know where every student is at any moment or face the consequences of being sued.

This is no different than an ID chip in a name badge that opens doors in a business. Every time you open a door with your ID badge, you are logged and tracked as entering the room or building. This is no different.

How is this any different than an employer using swipe cards instead of keys? This has nothing to do with "Big Brother." The students are not required to wear their uniforms when they are not in school. Hell, RFID chips are in just about every product you buy, so Wal-mart being able to track you while you are walking around their store is "Big Brother"? Ridiculous.

"RFID is already in use all around us. Ever chipped your pet dog or cat with an ID tag? Or used an EZPass through a toll booth? Or paid for gas using ExxonMobils' SpeedPass? Then you've used RFID." ~ http://www.securityfocus.com/...

Why are they used? What is so important that I have to be tracked? This is only going to get worse. The potential for misuse is huge.

RFID chips are used for inventory tracking. They come in all shapes and sizes. I'm sure you've probably seen one that look like this

rfid chips inventory tracking shapes sizes

Stores are suppose to disable them when you purchase the item. I agree that the potential for misuse is huge and since the corporations are paying the politicians and talking heads, any regulation of these chips will have Republicans screaming big government.

Besides, after the Patriot Act there is no such thing as privacy anymore. There are camera on every corner, every web site you visit is tracked, license plate readers track your automobile, government agencies filtering all cell phone calls & email messages & web sites for key words.

There is no privacy to protect anymore, it is all gone.

When are we going to blame the parents? It is still up to the parents to instill the need for education to their children. Why is it always left to the government to do what the parents should be doing. No, I think it's a smart thing to do, because the parents have abandoned their responsibility. When the parents start doing their responsibility, then they can stop the government from doing this. What's to stop the children from removing the ID tags? Nothing. So, again, I will say this "IT'S THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PARENTS" no body else.

Thank God it's in Brazil and not here in the US. But it's ridiculous either way. Parents should make a little more time to see their kids off to school. That's the problem these days; everyone in a hurry.

I think it's surprising that these are being installed as a way to track truancy and not simply under the guise of 'safety'.
Either way, I think it's disturbing that schools and workplaces are becoming more and more involved in our personal lives.

"It's expected to be implemented next year, and is costing the government $670,000."

    .... wait, WHAT?!

Forget how scary this idea is, how about the cost!! Spending THIS much on TRACKING kids?? Isn't there a BETTER place for it to go?!

You know, somewhere like actually funding EDUCATION or putting it towards MATERIALS for the schools???

I mean I don't know how Brazil's education system is fairing, but regardless of that, this is STILL a waste of money... leashes and microchips are meant for PETS, not KIDS.

    duh gif

Please, don't let this come to America someday. PLEASE.

    Very smart I add.
It should be used in everyday situations; imagine when your remote control goes missing, or your phone, or even something like the car keys. The idea of placing tracking devices for most of the everyday things we use in an ingenious idea I've always had since age 7! Hahaha
