birth mar 6 1475 death feb 18 1564
Sculptor, architect, painter. His father had close connections
with the Medici family. When Michelangelo was 13, he was sent to painter
Ghirlandaio. After two years he come at the sculpture school in the Medici
gardens. His works "Battle of the Centaurs" and the "Madonna of the Stairs" was
made while he was 16 years old. After Medici was temporarily expelled
Michelangelo settled in Bologna and then went to Rome where he produced his
first large sculpture "Bacchus." Also about same time he produced the only work
he ever signed "Pieta." Between 1501 and 1504, Michelangelo returning to
Florence where he produced the symbol of Florence-"David." In 1505 Pope Julius
II who gives him two commissions recalled him to Rome. One was painting the
frescoes of the Sistine Chapel ceiling painted, between 1508 and 1512. The other
was production of Pope Julius II tomb. The pope ordered him to put aside the
tomb project in favor of painting the Sistine ceiling. Michelangelo made some of
his finest sculpture for the Julius Tomb, including the "Moses," the "Bound
Slave" and the "Dying Slave." In 1520 he designed Laurentian Library in
Florence. Between 1519 and 1534 he took the commission of the Medici Tombs for
the New Sacristy of San Lorenzo. In 1534 Michelangelo went back to Rome but work
on the Medici Tombs continued. In 1536, he worked on the "Last Judgment" for the
altar wall of the Sistine Chapel, which he finished in 1541. The largest fresco
of the Renaissance is his depicts "Judgment Day." His last paintings were the
frescoes of the Pauline Chapel in the Vatican, which still is little accessible
to the public. Unlike his other frescoes, they are in the position normal for
narrative painting, on a wall and not exceptionally high up

one question. why is Adam's dick smaller than the first joint of his index finger? David seems a bit woefully endowed as well. I mean he was certainly a great artist, but the proportion here seems pretty off to me.

lol. yes, I've heard he was gay. Hmmm - food for thought. I'm thinking maybe the chuch's obsession with sex might have made them want disproportionate male nudes. Screwed up times - and not much progress from those folks.

Well I heard that Ceasar Borgia is the man that he used for Christ and he was one of his lovers. This man Ceasar is also the son of Pope Alexander.

To a painter who never painted walls........... Though he did a great job on a ceiling (Good Times).

In all serious, I'm glad talented individuals like him come along. They bring beauty and thought to a basic world.

"There is nothing wrong with reading, writing and arithmetic..... But if you take away the arts, what are they going to write about?" (Mr. Holland's Opus).

Brilliant Artist .. born out of Privilege (but too far back in the line to actually be the one to inherit) .. he was also known also to stand up to those in power (including the church!) He actually got payment after 'protesting' .. and even wrote billing statements to the church.
