Mexican Reporter Harassed by N.Y. Jets?

Stop me if you think that you’ve heard this one before.

Supermodel-worthy female sports reporter wears skintight jeans and alluring makeup while reporting on football team. Team members wolf whistle at her and yell inappropriate comments while she’s trying to do her job. Talk radio sports jockeys make cracks like, “What did she expect?” Rinse, repeat.

This time the story focuses on TV Azteca reporter Ines Sainz, who recently walked the sidelines to cover the New York Jets (the subjects of this year’s HBO series “Hard Knocks").

The league is now looking into what happened on Saturday when the former Miss Spain visited the Jets’ Florham Park facility to interview quarterback Mark Sanchez, during which she was reportedly berated with whistling, rude remarks and what The New York Daily News referred to as “extended stares.”

In keeping with the juvenile, fast-and-loose behavior uncovered in “Hard Knocks,” the paper also reported that defensive backs coach Dennis Thurman intentionally overthrew players in an interception drill so the ball would land near Sainz’s feet.

Owner Woody Johnson gave Sainz a call on Sunday to apologize and assured her that, “We will continue to work with the league to gather the facts and take appropriate steps necessary to maintain a respectful environment for the media."

Do You Think the Reporter Was Harassed or Were Boys Just Being Boys?

Dude. She is a super, super, super curvy woman in a Men's, repeat Men's locker room. Not a library. Not a coffee shop. Not an ACLU meeting.

These guys play professional sports for a living. This is a woman who would give wood to a Eunich.

C'mon get over it. And by the way, Ms. Sainz, I have a breaking story I need to reveal to a reporter. Can you come by for a personal interview today, say 3 pm?? I'll leave the door open. Help yourself to some Champagna!

Last time I checked, New York was still in the U.S. That means if everyone was getting paid they are on the job and legally protected from annoyances like rape or the threat thereof. Were the boys on the clock? If so, then that locker room is a job site just the same as an office. Their behavior should reflect that.

This is not about the locker room at your gym, where all these comments about provocative clothing and what do you expect would be totally appropriate.

A woman who enters the men's locker room at your local gym wearing f*k-me heels probably wants attention. A woman dressed by her employer, on a job assigned by her editor, and functioning in a professional capacity is not the same thing.

A bunch of guys on their own time probably can't be blamed for verbal remarks in that situation. Ball players on the payroll during an interview with a reporter are not the same thing.

Women reporters have no place in a men's locker room just like men are not allowed into women's locker room to report on a story. Women always scream for equal rights, well it's a two way street.

She shouldn't have went in to the locker room, she should've waited outside. But, she is dressed fine, everything is covered up. It's not her fault she looks good in tight clothing, what are we supposed to wear baggy jeans and lose t-shirts?

Sexual harrasment is not applicable in Mexico so needless to say she is not aware of a more appropriate dress-code. She was dressed in skintight jeans and a tight top so of course "all eyes on her". Isn't that what she likes?

Watch Mexican TV shows to see that people don't mind hearing men tell women, "geez, what a nice body you have".

IMHO she's a butta face. Everything is nice but her face!

She is gorgeous! However common sense would be good here. If she's not careful she might get gang banged.

However, the way she looks doesn't excuse their behavior. They're supposed to be professionals right?

And you people are SICK. You make it seem like just because someone is very sexy, they deserve to be raped based on that fact alone. Americans have no class.

When you dress like a streetwalker in front of a bunch of men in a semi or totally undressed state, what do you expect. I think she made the comment that she was dressed the way most young women in her country dress. Well, she was not in her home country, she was a guest in our country and should dress as a guest.

How do guests dress in our country? In a potato sack? They call it a Burqua in Muslim countries, where women have to be covered because (they say) the men are too spineless to control themselves.

I think she could have been dressed classier, there is a difference between being beautiful, and showing it off and just looking...trashy. That being said, if female reporters are allowed in men's locker rooms, those men should act like professional adults regardless of what the woman is wearing.

So based on your thinking, guys shouldn't be fashion designers, make up artists, hairdressers or nurses either? Let women do what they want, and shut your antiquated, prejudice and Victorian mouth

Ha! Real men are not fashion designers or make-up artists nor hairdressers their gay. Barbers yes, nurses no. orderlies yes. Just because people voted for equal rights does not make us equal. Women are not equal to men, thats scientific. We think differently and our bodies are different. Do we all bleed the same color of blood? Yes. Do we all have and experience the same emotions yes. But that doesn't make us equal. If we were then that sports reporter wouldn't have been so offended, she would have expected it. Sure let women do what they want but don't cry about it when you don't like the outcome! And if that makes me antiquated, prejudice nad Victorian then freckin deal with it!!

boys will be boys is a cheap excuse. they're not boys. they're supposed to be MEN. grown men. stop making up excuses for them and the notion that she should have to wear a long dress to prevent this is so disturbing and gross. she should be free to wear WHATEVER she wants without having to worry if some pig is going to sexually harass or assault her. even in a long dress someone would harass her. just stop.

whether she belonged in there or not is debatable and not at all the main issues at hand. i'm pretty sure i already answered what i expect from them regardless of whether the lady walked in as naked as the day she was born or if she was in an overly large parka. i expect them to have to decency and respect for her that she deserves. the same respect that they would show a man. the same respect they show their mothers, sisters, grandmothers, aunts, daughters and whatever else you want to name that was born with a vagina. is that really such a complex notion? i'll make sure and tell rape victims that were coincidentally wearing short skirts that they should "get over it and not put themselves in that position" while i'm at it, right?

WHATEVER she wants? Come on on? You know better than that! If you don't want a disrespectful reaction don't treat the situation in which you find yourself disrespectfully.
This is a free country granted, but that does not excuse one from practicing COMMON SENSE.
She knew this was going to happen. She did what she did on purpose. And she now getting all the attention that she wanted in the first place.

Oh you know her personally? She told you those things? She told you that she assumed she was going to get those reactions and sexually harassed whilst trying to do her job like a normal person? If she is expected to practice "common sense" by dressing differently, how is it that these men are NOT expected to practice that same common sense and treat this woman with human decency an even a sliver of respect enough to not harass her? Why do they suddenly get to walk away like they did NOTHING wrong?

Would they accept someone going after a female relative of theirs the same way they did to her? Doubt it.

No, I don't know her personally, but I know her type. She didn't have to tell me anything because the way she came across to the 53 men in that locker room said volumes. She has committed a disservice to all women who have otherwise thrived in the sports reporting arena. Rather than use skill and expertise as professional reporter she chose flaunt her assets to make up for her lack of professionalism as a sports reporter. Her actions have drawn more attention to whether women should be allowed in football locker rooms in the first place. So, I suppose you are one of these people who believe that if you place your hand on a red hot stove grill it's not supposed to burn you because you're you and because you're special, huh? That grill is supposed to have common sense and treat you with human decency and even a sliver of respect enough to not burn you? Right. The laws of nature do not have to abide by anyone's moral compass. You asked, why do they suddenly get to walk away like they did nothing wrong, they did not go to her, SHE WENT TO THEM AND SHE KNEW THAT WHAT SHE WEARING WAS GOING TO GET THE RESPONSE THAT SHE WANTED BECAUSE SHE WANTED TO BE IN THE NATIONAL SPOT LIGHT. AND IT WENT JUST LIKE SHE PLANNED. Come on sweetheart, you are a beautiful (assumption) :) and an intell...

Are you kidding me? Placing my hand on a red hot stove is NOT at all an applicable analogy to this situation. Why? Because a stove is a piece of machinery. A piece of equipment. Is that stove capable of morals? Of ethics? Is that stove even capable of constructive and logical thought? Is that stove raised by a set of parents expected to instill upon it the very things listed where it is supposed to have human decency and respect? Does that stove have a conscience and know right from wrong? No. Not at all. Not even close. These are men. These are human beings capable of thought, of feeling and knowing right from wrong and if they don't, the law/media are there to catch their wrong doings. They are not machinery such as that stove. These are evolved human beings, not neanderthals and not invented pieces of equipment. She went to them because it's her JOB. She didn't walk in there looking for a good time and a few drinks whether she wore flattering clothes or not. She went in there looking to do her job as ordered by producers and bosses and the rape culture in this country has totally bypassed the wrong doings of the players to focus solely on her and only her-- victim blaming. Meanwhile at the end of the day what they did was still very much wrong.

Can't you admit that it's still wrong to sexually harass a woman and make her feel uncomfortable? I know women that have been sexually harassed wearing the most unflattering clothing and large winter jackets. The clothing is not the issue. The harassment is. No matter how many times you dance around it or refuse to agree to it, the harassment IS the problem.
  • sensibl... theniml... October 04, 2010 14:39:51

Sure, it is wrong to sexually harass women. but, more often times than not, women tend to get harassed when they wear clothing that THEY KNOW is going to get a response from the opposite sex. Then when they get that response, then they want to cry sexual harassment. Don't walk in front of me with a G-string on and not expect me to say something about it. :) That's just not going to happen and you know it so go ahead and smile now. I'm sure that 99.9% of the men on this planet would say the same thing. I will ask you again, can't you admit the possibility that she could have planned the whole thing for her own selfish reasons?
