Mexican Pageant Queen Dethroned for Gaining Weight: Fair or Foul?

A Mexican beauty queen is being stripped of her title, and the opportunity to compete in the Miss World pageant, all because she gained six pounds.

19-year-old Cynthia de la Vega came in second place in the Nuestra Belleza Mexico competition last September. In Mexico, the first-place winner goes on to represent her country in the Miss Universe pageant, while the runner-up competes in Miss World.

De la Vega was in the process of preparing for the November pageant, when the organizers of Nuestra Belleza Mexico took away her crown and decided to send Gabriela Palacio in her place. De la Vega claims this happened because they were unhappy about the small amount of weight she had gained since last September.

According to Lupita Jones, the director of Nuestra Belleza Mexico, de la Vega did not lose her title because she gained weight. She said it was due to "a lack of dedication and discipline" and because she "did not comply with the recommendations and goal agreed upon for her preparation."

However, de la Vega disputed these claims and said, "I always attended all of my classes and I did all of my activities. I never disrespected any teachers." She went on to explain that the pageant organizers demanded that she lose weight, but did not provide her with the necessary tools, such as a nutritionist.

"I feel healthy enough to represent my country, and I think this is an injustice," said de la Vega. "They took away the crown that I earned. That is mine."

What do you think? Was the decision to revoke de la Vega's title over a small weight gain fair or foul?

She is very pretty, but the picture of her (above) seems to be curvy with meat on her bones. Even her face seems full........... I'd be interested to know what her original pageant weight was. Maybe she was at the limit then.

I'm 5"2 , and six pounds would be a problem for me.

There is more to this story than meets the eye. If the pageant authorities are alleging a lack of dedication or lack of commitment by the girl, they should prove it. She denies those allegations completely. She says that she attended all events and classes, without fail. So the girl is calling their bluff. As far as the 6-pounds is concerned, they could have given her a stupid 'warning' to the effect that she had to lose the weight by one-months time. But no, she had no opportunity to do anything. I don't think that she was treated fairly, regarding the 6-pounds. And another thing. Some beauty pageant winners lose their crowns for far more objectionable behavior, like screwing anything and everything that moves, and general slutty behavior. And some of those contestants even get away with it. Therefore, I feel sorry for this Mexican girl.

Mexico is wrong this time. A woman can gain 6 pounds water weigth during certain parts of their Cycles. And drop it just as quickly. Maybe good looking young ladies will shun them after this for their ignorance of women.

I think it's a little messed up to take it away over 6 pounds. It's six pounds, for cryin' out loud. Sure, if she had gained 60 pounds, or even 15 or 20 pounds, I would understand that. But, six pounds can be lost amazingly quickly when you actually try, and I'm sure if given the opportunity, she could have taken that bit of weight off before the competition. Also, the director of the pageant's explanation for her being dethroned was kind of pitiful. That's about as much beating around the bush one could do when all you are really saying is "She gained weight". I guess this just goes to show that us American people aren't the only ones who are weight obsessed.

while 6 pounds is nothing and barely noticable, unfortunatly that's what you sign up for when entering a beauty pageant. i'm not saying it's fair, but you have to know what you're getting yourself into.

    The question's dishonest.
Cynthia de la Vega claims it was a 6 pound weight gain
Lupita Jones, the director of Nuestra Belleza Mexico, said it was due to "a lack of dedication and discipline" and because she "did not comply with the recommendations and goal agreed upon for her preparation."

A classic case of the "he said, she said" type.

On the surface I cannot believe the 6 pounds was the only reason unless it was the last straw following several other transgressions as indicated by the Director.

Maybe they were concerned she would gain even more weight, and besides they say that was not the reason anyway. I think mexican women can be very beautiful, but they tend to hit the wall at a young age. First they gain 50 pounds and then they grow a moustache.

Six pounds can be water weight! Especially if it's that time of the month!
