You know the old saying that makes most people cringe: the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. Well, it's a huge blanket statement. But in one case, it really does apply. According to a New York Times analysis based on income disclosure, members of Congress are, on average, making 15 percent more money than they were six years ago.
As for the average American? Well, they're getting poorer. About 8 percent poorer in fact. The New York Times analysis found that the median net worth of members of Congress is at $913,000 while the median net worth for the country in general is $100,000.
Some may say the difference in wealth is appropriate, as members of Congress are hard at work making laws and policies for the rest of America -- but others are not so generous. What do you think of the gap in wealth between Congress members and the rest of America? Is it fair or foul?

Foul+12Congress should make he national average wage, which according to the ssa is 41,673.83 per year for 2010. That would put them in line with their constituents.

A corrupted model that is unlikely to change.
Shame on those on Congress for taking that kind of salary and not standing up for the people.
And MANY THANKS to you and every other man and woman who has put their life on the line for Americans.
I think the Senate and House pay is a little high, but that has nothing to do with net worth
This comment states that a rookie congressman starts at $173,000 that is WAY too high, considering the median income of this country. Representatives and senators don't even work the whole year, they should be hourly. getting paid for only the time they actually work. They shouldn't START OUT at over $100,000/year. No wonder our government is over run with greed
I may be wrong, but I believe most people who run for office are actually honest and want to do what is best for the country. Once they get in office, all the lobbyists throwing money at them and all the power and gifts given them, they become corrupt.
I think the real problem with the government isn't the Congress or the Presidency, it's lobbyists buying these people for their own cause.
That is why I am voting for Ron Paul because I am mad as hell, R u?
it will never happen.
I don't like him either.
