MEMPHIS, Tenn. (CBSDC) — A medical company is blaming President Obama’s health care law for the layoffs of nearly 100 people.
Smith & Nephew says a 2.3 percent excise tax on medical devices in the “Obamacare” law caused the layoffs in the Memphis and Andover, Mass., offices.
“The nearly $30 billion tax on medical devices that took effect Jan. 1, 2013, has impacted a number of companies across the U.S.,” the company said in a statement to WHBQ-TV.

I was a distributor for medical equipment....the products I sold went to professionals, hospitals, clinics...nothing for the public.
A 2.3% tax is about 1/3 of the annual price increases that were passed on to dealers and consumers every year. 7% was the low side of average....
Smith and Nephew is an Orthopedic manufacturer of prosthetic reconstruction devices and and other items.... http://www.smith-nephew.com/ They have 11,000 employees and a presence in 90 countries.... Their stock price is up and so is the sales volume of the stock.
The 2.3% tax excuse is a red herring. More than likely they are moving jobs out of the US, or are just getting rid of employees to maximize profits.....

I just got done with my Taxes for 2012. We use H&R; Block, have for many years, the last question my Tax Lady (Used the same Lady for the past 13 years) asks me? Do you have Health Care. My children and my wife do have private health care, but I do not. In the past 10 years I've been to the doctor 3 times. Cost me all of the $225.00 including the Prescriptions. Why in the hell do I need it? I have enough money in the bank or stocks etc that if something were to come up that was not related to being a Fire Fighter or a Car Wreck etc where other insurance will cover it... I don't need private insurance. You know what it will cost me next year (2013 taxes), as this IS a tax, if I do not have private Insurance $300.00. Know what it will cost me the following year (2014 taxes)? $850.00. So in two years I will pay $1150.00 for something I will NEVER use. Oh wait, just because I pay the TAX in 2014 for the 2013 taxes, I don't get health care yet. I have to wait until 2015 to get it.

Here’s how to take the arthritis bath:
Make a tea of elder flowers, peppermint and yarrow. Drink as hot as possible before the bath. Then pour about 3 pounds of Epsom salts or enough Dead Sea salts for 1 bath into very hot bath water. Anyway, I thought Smith and Nephew was a Pharmaceuticals corp but I was wrong. It's more of a sports injury and joint replacement clinic. Even so, that 100 jobs is the first stones in an avalanche of unemployed in healthcare. Some say it will be trimming the fat others will say they are gutting the industry. I say as a lowly caregiver, I have watched everyone from the local home oxygen delivery guy, to doctors, to nursing homes and hospitals bill Medicare fraudulently. Nursing homes the worst. What happens when you report it? nothing if it's Medicare. If it's Medicaid though look out for swat teams. The medical industry dug this hole and it got deeper through each administration since the early 70s. Obama's approach is a political one and it will suck. Personally, I think it's a law enforcement issue. Too much picking of the money tree which is Medicare.
