john was prophesied to come to prepare the way for the Christ and He was to tell those amongst him of who he was and who was to come and they did not know him because they did not believe him.

Jesus and John the Baptist (New Testament) are compared with Elijah (Old Testament). Jesus was saying that John was the manifestation of Elijah. So Christians believe that John the Baptist heralded Jesus arrival.

there was an Old Tesament prophecy that Elijah would return before the Messiah to prepare the way of the Lord. John the baptist came in the spirit of Elijah to fullfill the prohecy.

......................... John is the messenger relating the good news of the coming and the arrival of the Christ. In my opinion this also indicates John is the last prophet..but I could be wrong.

As Jesus said, The law and the Prophets prophesied until John the Baptist. John the Baptist was the one coming in the spirit and power of Elijah. Meaning. Jesus is the fulfillment of ALL those prophecies of which the Prophets spoke.
