    one in the same.

    Matthew 17:10-13 (King James Version)
And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?
And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.
But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.
Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.
John the Baptist (Elias) was chosen before the womb by God to tell of Jesus' coming, and preach repentance.

that john was indeed the reincarnation of Elijah. And that reincarnation is a fact of life.

No, that is not what I am saying. Read the scripture. John the Baptist and Jesus lived at the same time. They were cousins.

Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: and he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
    (Malachi 4:5-6 KJV)

Remember, though, that John the Baptizer came in the SPIRIT of Elijah.
And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.
    (John 1:19-21 KJV)

And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
    (Matthew 16:16-17 KJV)

Heck if I know. There are parts of the Bible (apart from the really good and necessary stuff about mercy and love and forgiveness) that I find almost incomprehensible. That's why I'm a Quaker. We toss out all of the names, trivia, and "begats" and give people the Biblical equivalent of a Reader's Digest Condensed Version! ;-)

Oh, Goblin, so close, and yet so far. Albeit this Christian believes in reincarnation, most do not. It is taught against, but then again, Jesus always said "those who have ears to hear".

Jesus and John the Baptist (New Testament) are compared with Elijah (Old Testament). Jesus was saying that John was the manifestation of Elijah. So Christians believe that John the Baptist heralded Jesus arrival.

there was an Old Tesament prophecy that Elijah would return before the Messiah to prepare the way of the Lord. John the baptist came in the spirit of Elijah to fullfill the prohecy.

Mat 11:10 For this is [he], of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

Mat 11:11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

Mat 11:12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

Mat 11:13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

Mat 11:14 And if ye will receive [it], this is Elias, which was for to come.

Mat 11:15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear

......................... John is the messenger relating the good news of the coming and the arrival of the Christ. In my opinion this also indicates John is the last prophet..but I could be wrong.

As Jesus said, The law and the Prophets prophesied until John the Baptist. John the Baptist was the one coming in the spirit and power of Elijah. Meaning. Jesus is the fulfillment of ALL those prophecies of which the Prophets spoke.

Jesus is the fulfillment of all that the prophets spoke of, as well as the only One who could meet the demands of the Law. John was the promised herald to announce His arrival, as written by Malachi 4:5.
